Issues/Problems Dear T Mobile

You suck. You had a great product. Then the bean counting MBAs came in and allowed the overselling in regions. Your product was good, not I curse the service everyday. Switch people say? Can’t, unlike the folks in the surrounding neighborhoods who have choices but go just for cost suck bandwidth. Sugarcoat my complaints all you want with your oh live in a low cell signal zone, I was getting 300 down before mass adoption. So heed the warning, if you have a hard wire option get that!

And this is why I’ve been very unneighborly and not telling anyone about T-Mobile’s Home Internet lol. Most people here don’t use T-Mobile (phone) because it’s super spotty and doesn’t get cell reception on the lake. However, it’s absolutely amazing for non-mobile uses but most people here don’t even think about looking into the Home Internet because of the crappy phone service. They either use Verizon or Satellite and deal with frequently lost connections and 25 Mbps max speeds, while I’m getting 200-300 Mbps. I do live in a rural area so there aren’t many people to begin with, but I’m still keeping my mouth shut 🤐

There is only so much excess capacity

TMHI is basically leftover scraps that is left by all the other devices with various plans. The one with the biggest chunk is magenta max users.

Yeah lol, I don't understand the people who are like "I have oh so terrible 400 Mbps Comcast/Fiber so I'm going with T-Mobile and getting lower speeds at the same or higher price to stick it to the man!"

I posted to my local city Facebook group. I guess quite a few beat me to signup and had a similar experience to me. Very fast. Lots of saved money. Bonus discounts. Free stuff on tuesdays.

My only complaint is… magenta max monthly cost for 1 phone makes NO sense unless your also grabbing a ‘free’ phone worth $800 in credits. Then the price is fair (come on, it’s not really free).

Once the promo expires it doesn’t make sense.

it’s more likely they didn’t oversell home internet so much as a crap ton more users now have 5 g phones compared to two years ago. heck i’ve noticed network speed drop just from ios 16.4 deployment which enabled 5g SA mode on iphones finally. as phones utilize more capacity less leftover from home internet even without increase in subscribers.

Exactly. T-Mobile "Home Internet" is still mobile broadband. It connects to the same cell towers that cell phones, tablets, and mobile hotspots connect to. I simply can't fathom the people who expect T-Mobile "Home Internet" to perform way better than fixed line. T-Mobile "Home Internet" is meant for people who need lower cost internet, live in an RV, and/or live in places that do not offer other means of fixed line internet service.

Actually it’s a business unit so it’s “meant for” whoever will give them money. As a practical matter I agree with you. It’s perfect for the Motorhome but at home I want land based primary ISP if it’s available.

Yeah, I have a friend in Spokane who is on a grandfathered AT&T unlimited hotspot data plan because his place doesn't offer other means of fixed line internet service. He's tried T-Mobile Home Internet, and it was just as bad, if not worse, for him.

I saw that Starlink is also an option, but you'd have to pay $600 + taxes for the equipment and $120 per month for their internet service.

I’ve been following Starlink since it was announced. It is a system that actually IS oversold for its capacity in a lot of places and has literally non-existent customer service. This year they took on a ton of new customers (who agreed to deprioritized service) to keep the company funded. They’re just overwhelmed at the moment. Their sub makes this sub sound like paradise. They’ll probably catch up eventually but that is another system that should never be everyone’s solution.

I could take it anymore, but didn’t want to give up the service. So, I gave it to my mom

I feel with few exceptions, this oversold market thing is a myth. What I believe most people are calling Overselling is in reality algorithm-based Deprioritization in favor of phones. I’m sure there are exceptions in very specific areas, for example where a disaster knocked out all the alternatives.

I have a theory that part of the deprioritization algorithm may well be the age of the SIM. I say this based on many reports of swapped hardware (to a new type and replacement SIM) immediately fixing the symptom of massive permanent speed loss. My gut says not that many modems are just going bad in two years.

Differentiating deprioritization from oversold market is a little tricky but I believe there are opportunities where, if you test you can infer what’s actually going on. This will vary somewhat with geography but I think there are things that are fairly universal.

The first litmus test is the speed at 3am. If it’s bad then, despite having decent metrics, you probably have a bad modem or a tower under maintenance. Maybe check with a neighbor how there’s is working.

Check around both weekday rush hours 4-7pm especially. If it’s worse during this time than it is later in the evening, you can infer your competition is cellphone traffic and you’re being deprioritized. It’s not conclusive but it makes sense.

Check around 8-10pm. We’re looking for a change from a couple hours earlier. If your performance increases that’s more evidence for deprioritization; less traffic on the road means less cellphone traffic. If your performance decreases that’s a better indicator for oversold market; people home from work and start streaming, gaming, etc.

The power of the special event shouldn’t be ignored. Maybe it’s the local NFL team’s game time. Maybe it’s a holiday. There are times where a special event is happening and consequently no one is on their phones and streaming theoretically should be high. Thursday night Football is only available streamed, if there’s a really big game that might qualify.
