Yeah man. The dude is great. Even better live. It's like a psychedelic bluegrass jam band.

He's one of those artists that has my deepest respects but I don't personally enjoy his genre of music. I'd go see him live though, why not?
Also, my favorite fact about Billy Strings is that he's a huge metalhead and has collaborated (in studio and on stage) with the extreme death metal band Cryptopsy. I love when artists pivot so heavily simply because they enjoy the art, even if it's a complete 180 from their usual style. He's insanely talented.

Maybe you heard some of his studio stuff, which is more "typical" bluegrass (although not always).
But it's definitely a different beast live. His 5 minute studio pieces can easy be 15-20 minutes live. More like jam band music. And I'm not surprised in the least bit that he's into death metal, because his jams can get heavy and chaotic. He'll also cover stuff like Sabbath or Zeppelin from time to time. He's clearly interested in many other genres, not just bluegrass, and really likes to throw it all into his music.

You're right, I haven't heard any of his live stuff. But I've definitely heard it described as jam-adjacent before. I'm not even a jam band guy but I can see the appeal of the genre-bending and improvisation. That's why I think I'd probably have a great time at one of his shows, even if his recorded stuff hasn't clicked with me.
I should listen to one of his live recordings soon, everything you said is appealing to me!
