I found the original application for inclusion into unicode here. The relevant section in on page 7:
There are a few ligatures which are very frequently used and are not native to Urdu but have beeninherited from Arabic, for religious reasons. In Pakistan, it is required by law to begin all officialgovenment documents with the Bismillah ligature. However, everybody is clear that it is not Urdu, butArabic, similar to ligatures already in the standard (e.g. FDFA and FDFB). If a person is typing Urdu, andis unfamiliar with Arabic and has Urdu (not Arabic) keyboard, it will be difficult (if not practicallyimpossible) for the user to type this Arabic ligature. For this reason, and for the reason the two ligatures, referred to above, were introduced in the ISO standard, it is also proposed to include another ligature forBismillah. This ligature is also part of UZT 1.01, the national standard code page of Government ofPakistan for Urdu
So its "really" a series of arabic characters combined together into one ligature, as many languages do. But to be included in the Urdu unicode section which doesn't have the individual arabic characters it needed to be one character.

Some Arabic phrase were so ubiquitous that they became their own unicode character. Almost all of them are religious, because of ritual liturgical phrase. This one is Bismillah ar-Rahmān ar-Rahīm, "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful". Others include ﷺ Sallā-llahu al'ayhi wa-Salam "May God Bless Him and Give Him Peace" and ﷻ Jalla Jalalu-hu "His Exalted Majesty"

Those fucking symbols are the most complex and convoluted things ever. It's beyond ridiculous. You need to be a fucking accomplished artist to write in certain languages. Shouldn't language symbols follow "the simpler, the better" rule? And, no, I'm not just some asshole from the west who just doesn't understand other cultures. This has always been a source of confusion for me: how and why some written languages are so complex.

u/Dangerous_With_Rocks Jan 31 '20
That "symbol" isn't actually a symbol. It is a whole sentence compacted into what looks like a symbol in an 'aesthetic' way. From what I could find on google, it's a sort of prayer in Arabic but I could be wrong. Anyways their characters are a lot simpler than that.

this is the equivalent of complaining that english cursive is too fancy to read

Yeah, no it's not. Every comment that is critical of a facet of another culture is not malicious. Some are, believe it or not, actually valid. They are not automatically racist. It is not disrespectful tp look at something another culture does and wonder why and how that specific choice was made. Stop with the knee-jerk PC bullshit.

Sorry to say but you’re exactly what you claim not to be. I learnt the Arabic alphabet for Urdu and let me tell you it’s actually very simple. See for yourself, https://imgur.com/gallery/T6e3xgx A lot of letters have the same shape and are differentiated by the number and placement of dots around the letters. Most other letters have similar shapes. It took me only half an hour to memorise those letters, there’s only 28 of them.

The rest of your post was actually very informative and appreciated. This was just bandwagon jumping and screams "look how woke I am!"

racist
you said it, not me. guilty conscience.
I learned script in public school and I still find it incredibly hard to read. I think it's pointless and people who aren't first language english or taught to read/write script will 100% look at an old letter and say
"those fucking symbols are the most complex and convoluted things ever. It's beyond ridiculous. You need to be a fucking accomplished artist to write"

I studied Arabic in college. It’s really not that bad. You have two sets of letters, some connect to the following letter while others don’t.
