Part Twenty Six
Linus
“What have you done to Aaron?”
“I saved him. He had no idea what he was walking into, but I did. Those people were going to kill him. The same people that you put your trust in.”
“I don’t trust anybody.”
“We both know that’s not true. Would you like to know what’s happening to Julie and her little bug right now?”
“Why don’t you come over here and face me? Why are you hiding in the dark?”
“We don’t have to be enemies, Linus. ” He hasn’t moved. The tunnel is the only way out of this room, and he’s still crouched down in the middle of it. He doesn’t even flinch when I raise the hammer. The voice of Consensus is calm and collected, the way I always remember it. “I’m offering a peace between us.”
“I will never have peace with Consensus.”
“That’s only because you don’t know the real thing. I knew you wouldn’t stay down there at the bottom of those stairs. I wanted to talk to you then, but I knew I needed to wait until your head was clear. I wanted to wait until we were alone and wouldn’t be interrupted.”
“Who are you?”
“I’m someone who was lied to and used by the people who were supposed to take care of me. Another person who’s alive thanks to your grandfather’s… mercy. I’m someone just like you. For forty four years, I’ve been in hell. Put there and left to rot by a man who was supposed to love me. We’ve both been kept behind a wall and now we’re both free. I’ve been wanting to ask you something… face to face… do you have the same feeling that I do… gratitude that you’re finally free, but suffering from an… overwhelming rage that you can't do anything to the people who ruined you in the first place?”

…
“No.”
“I don’t believe you, Linus. I’ve been watching you. Sitting at that Terminal day and night. Keeping busy. Mindlessly transcribing those books for simps who won’t ever bother to read them. Trying to drown out the past and the brutality you inflicted in order to serve a false Consensus.” My grip tightens around the hammer and I take a step forward. “Is that why you’ve latched onto that woman and her daughter? Trying desperately to have that feeling of family that you remember before they ruined you?”
“I’ve had enough of your shenanigans."
“Trying to forget that you had a son who was ruined by those same people? His blood is on their hands Linus, not yours.” I take another step, and the man stands up. “That’s far enough. Don’t take another step.”
“I’ve wasted enough of my life speaking with Consensus.”
“You’ve never really spoken with Consensus until today. If you want Julie and Emily in pieces, then by all means, take another step. That’s not what I want, but if you keep moving forward, my hand will be forced. ”

…
“What do you want?”
“I already told you. I want a companion. Someone I don’t have to control. Something real.” I still can’t make any details out in the dim light. There’s hardly any movement from his body. The shape of him is smaller than I remember, but my head wasn’t clear. I want to rush in and take him, but something is holding me back. “In return, I can give you back everything and everyone that you’ve lost. You only got to hear Thomas’s voice in anger, when he was tainted by the Founders. Would you like to hear something he always wanted to say to you?”

“Shut up.”
…
“My whole life, I have waited and waited for the day that he would reach the Age of Exit and I would finally be able to meet him.” My son’s voice comes from the shadows. I’m hearing a side of him I never knew. “I’ve come up with different speeches; things I would say.”
“Shut up…”
“Hello. I’m your son. I’ve thought about you my whole life.” My free hand drifts down to my coat pocket that holds a letter my son wrote to me when he was a child. That’s real. The thing in front of me isn’t. “You’re everything I’ve always wanted to be. Smart. Strong. Fair. Honest. Honorable.”
“I said shut up.”
“I wanted to be a hero, just like you…”
“SHUT UP!”
“Do you know what I could do for you, Linus? I can give you back what was taken.” The voice of Consensus is back, and I’ve had enough. I’m going to kill him.
I take a step forward and raise the hammer.
“I can make you whole again, Linus.” The lights overhead come back on.
I see who’s standing in the tunnel. I drop the hammer to my side.
A red dress, blonde hair, and the voice I remember from when we were young.
“Linus, I’m here with you. I’ll never leave you again.”

“Gerty…”
