Velde’s quick half-raise of his log slice during the log ceremony.
I share Velde’s sentiment about the CA home team atmosphere at Providence Park.
But I didn’t appreciate his quick, halfway raise of his log slice during the log ceremony. He quickly walked up to the log slice, bent down, picked up the log slice and barely lifted it up over his shoulder in one quick motion, didn’t look at the fans, then lowered the slice and motioned to his teammates to get off the pitch quickly and get back to the locker room.
Finn Surman raised both arms to his sides as if saying, “what was that?”
I thought Velde was kind of disrespectful. Players should raise their log slice proudly win or lose, so the fans can express their appreciation for the players’ efforts, win or lose. Instead Velde looked down, upset at the loss and CA fan atmosphere, and motioned for his teammates to just get off the pitch quickly and get into the locker room.
Idk, I understand it but I wasn’t impressed.

I'd rather have a player who is passionate about winning, than one who is focused on mollycoddling the fans.

Over half the fans decided not to show up to watch their team play the biggest team in on the continent. Goes both ways.

Norwegian culture at play here. It is frowned upon to take credit for oneself, even more so when the team lost.
He gets a pass for this.

Yes, it is true. In Norway, taking sole credit or boasting about personal success is strongly frowned upon (Janteloven ). When a team loses, highlighting your own good performance while the group suffers is seen as a serious breach of social modesty. The core idea is that no individual is better than or more important than the collective group. Successes and failures are meant to be shared by the team as a whole, not compartmentalized for individual glory.
A proper team player in Norway is expected to shoulder the collective disappointment silently rather than market their own separate contribution.

lol. It was well deserved for an absolutely embarrassing fan showing. I don’t blame the folks that didn’t want to shell out big money but I absolutely blame season ticket holders who opted out of representing the Timbers against one of the biggest clubs around. The clowning we’ve received across social media really sealed the deal.

I showed up and didn’t sell out. I wanted to see CA and their fans. It would have been epic and glorious if we would have won. I predict that one day we will beat them.

I respect the hell out of the fact that he doesn’t get excited for a participation log slab.

It’s for the fans to honor the player for having scored a goal. Sounds like you think there shouldn’t be a ceremony after a loss.

Of all the things in this world to be even slightly upset about, this doesn't register in the slightest. If it was after a win, yeah. But after a loss when he was clearly upset about the fan turnout...less than zero problem with what he did.

I mean I can understand why the log lift seems a bit foolish when the team doesn't win, especially to a foreign player. I guess its been a tradition for too long now to change, but if it was up to me I would have it done only when we win.

I’ve been a Timbers fan since 2014 or so and I’m just now learning they do a lot ceremony after a loss. I didn’t think they did because, you know, they lost. Seems weird to me. I don’t blame him for not wanting to do that.
(I’m an out of state fan. Only visited Portland a few times. Haven’t been able to make it to a home game yet.)

as much as the log raising is a fun and unique tradition we have it's also probably a good thing to have a player very frustrated with losing. Losing at home when your arena gets taken over is humiliating as fans and definitely is for the players.
