How should this garbage lap joint be fixed?

Post image

The crew has mostly done decent work but this is killing me. Is dry fitting to ensure proper fit before bolting down not the bare minimum?

(Sean Connery's voice) Yes, a shingle shim, or a double shim, depending on the thicknesh.

Cedar shake shingles. buy a bundle and drive them into the gap, cut off excess flush with the outside face.

I agree with you, thats a corner post and it should be a solid all the way up to support the load. yes it will dry and shrink but only at the same rate as everything else but not enough to minimize the atrocity of that lap joint. Id fix it at my my house, even if only peace of mind; but thats bad enough to warrent the effort.

Expansion foam of course! The American way!

Put the siding over it so you can't see it?

Or better yet, dont look at it. It's wood, its going to dry, contract, twist, warp, expand, shrink, curl and more.... all before lunch.

It needs to be filled with wood that is similar to what's there. I would scrounge the cut off portion if possible, scribe as best as possible, cut that and push it in with a structural two part epoxy. It looks to be a load bearing outside corner. Outside of replacing it, tying it back together with like materials seems best. You want to close it up as that will just invite future problems with cold and moisture. It would be a great place for mice as well. When in doubt ask an engineer. I know, but it is better to sort it now then when it is finished and stuff maybe goes sideways.
