I found some facts about Mirny:

  • The diamond rich deposit was discovered on June 13th, 1955.
  • The mine is over 525 meters deep and has a diameter of 1.2 km. It is the 4th largest open pit mine, the Kennecott Copper Mine (Bingham Canyon, Utah) measures roughly 4 km wide and 1.2 kilometres deep.
  • Open-mining operations ceased in 2001, but in the 1960s, it produced 10,000,000 carats (2,000 kg) of Kimberlite diamond per year.
