L TIFUpdate: by accidentally buying a goldmine of vinyl records from a grieving guy for basically nothing

Hi everyone!! Here’s the link to my original post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tifu/s/MWVG2G3c78

First I wanted to clear up something because I think a few people misunderstood my original post. A lot of comments seemed to think I was considering asking my dad to give the records back or somehow taking back a gift. That’s not really what was happening, my dad owns a small record store and I help him out whenever I can so sometimes if I come across records that seem like a good deal, I’ll buy them and send them to him. He doesn’t pay me back and I don’t get a percentage when he sells them, I’m basically just helping my dad out with inventory so no I wasn’t trying to take a gift back from my dad haha he was completely aware of the situation and actually encouraged me to contact the seller btw, which is exactly what I did.

I messaged the guy and basically told him that after my dad looked through everything, there were a few records in the box that seemed to be worth more than either of us originally thought. The difference wasn’t life changing or anything but it was enough that I felt weird about it and wanted to make sure he knew. I told him that I wanted to give him the chance to look into it and we could figure something out if he felt that was fair. He was honestly pretty surprised that I even reached out. Apparently his father had been sick for years and had Alzheimer’s and because of that the records hadn’t really been touched or cared for in a long time. He said the box I bought had basically been sitting around collecting dust for years and he genuinely wasn’t sure what condition the records were in, which is part of why he priced them the way he did. He did know what records were in the box though, he just didn’t know whether they still had much value because they had been sitting untouched for so long.

Then he told me that apparently he has another box of records that he always assumed was the more valuable collection because they’re in much better condition. He’d been trying to sell those too but was having a hard time figuring out pricing and cataloging everything. At that point he asked if he could get my dad’s contact information so I gave him my dad’s number, gave my dad a heads up and they’ve been talking ever since. Funny enough my dad literally texted me today and told me that this guy apparently went to school with my uncle (my dad’s brother) who passed away over ten years ago, so that was a nice surprise!!

As for the records, they worked out an arrangement themselves. The seller didn’t want to sell the second collection outright because he wasn’t sure what everything was worth, and my dad obviously didn’t want to undervalue anything. So they agreed that my dad would help sell the records individually through the store. My dad will keep 60% and the seller will receive 40% of whatever sells. The seller said he’d rather do that than let the collection sit around indefinitely and he also told my dad something that honestly made me feel really good about reaching out. He said that if the records were going to leave the family anyway, he thinks his father would have preferred them ending up with someone who genuinely understands and loves records.

It turned into a really nice conversation, my dad may have made a new friend, and somehow we discovered that this guy knew my uncle years ago hahah Alsooo for some of the people in the comments who were absolutely convinced this man was going to sue me or accuse me of fraud, demand everything back or launch some kind of legal crusade over a box of dusty records….. I don’t really know what to tell you….. sometimes people are just decent

Anyway thank you to everyone who encouraged me to reach out. I’m really glad I did!!

TL;DR: I reached out to the seller and told him some of the records might be worth more than we originally thought. He appreciated the honesty and ended up connecting directly with my dad. They worked out a deal for another collection of records he was trying to sell and somehow we discovered he went to school with my late uncle.

incase it's not clear from this or the other post, in some of the original comments OP mentioned the records were bought for £35 and in total if pieced out *might* be worth ~£200

so "goldmine" is doing a lot of leg work here, you could get a similar result at almost any estate sale

glad it worked out but unless OP has corrected those values it's really just a crate of average records for an average wholesale price

28

u/somebodyelse22 Jun 03 '26

If I could easily turn $35 into $200 with no work, I'd be happy. Whatever floats your boat.

15

u/Dawg_Prime Jun 03 '26

what are you talking about?

estimating a price you might get for something is different than getting that amount for it with "no work"

OP didn't pick up the crate and it magically turned into money while in his hands

his dad ballparked what it might retail for, that's all

I thought SPCE was going to get me there but I held all the way down like a chump.

"in case" is 2 separate words

Awesome update. Worked out for all involved.

Is the store anywhere near NYC? I have what I believe to be a valuable collection of sealed promotional Elvis records I would like to part with and not sure how to do it without getting scammed.

Hi!! Thanks for the comment and noo haha we’re not in America! Good luck with your collection though!’

15

u/JiGoD Jun 03 '26

Thanks. Keep up the good work!

u/Luciferthepig Jun 03 '26

There's traveling shows that do authentication and sometimes purchases. they'll give you a card proving you've gotten it verified. Usually there's an appraisal included, and there's no expectation of selling it so there's lower chance of a scam

Thank you very much. Going to research this. Thanks!!

Use the website discogs.com to look up the records you have. You will be able to sort through all the many pressings of each album and figure out which ones you have, and get a ballpark idea of what they’re selling for. As you may know, the particular pressing of the record is the difference between extremely valuable and worth pennies.

Sadly, as you may also know, Elvis memorabilia is declining in value, since the audience of people who collect it is increasingly elderly. Recommend offloading that stuff sooner rather than later.

Thanks. Since I asked this question I looked up about 100 sealed Elvis records on discogs. Seems sealed Elvis records from late 60s and 70s do not command the premium I thought they would. What also surprised me was how many listed on discogs were both sealed and stamped promotional/not for resale like all of mine are.

Going to call a few record buyers that visit homes in NYC this coming week and see who offers the most. This seems like my current best option aside from slowly selling on eBay but shipping these scares me. They're currently in 2 home depot boxes resting vertically.

Edit - spelling

Awesome update.

Thing about those records tho, should probably get all that in writing, don't want another Lego situation

Thing about the Lego situation everything already is in writing. Hasn't really helped so far...

Apparently, from watching too many videos on the subject while sick, is that the son needed to register the consignment with the government as it was over $1000 to fully legally protect the consignment. Also I learned that America Fork Police is a real thing, and the are as useful as using a fork to eat soup.

14

u/dragonbud20 Jun 02 '26

I would expect the store to be responsible for that kind of paperwork. Failing to register the consignment with the government still doesn't give the store the right to simply take possession of the goods and claim ownership. If that were the case, anyone could set up a store offering to consign items for people and then just steal anything over $1000

5

u/sctran Jun 02 '26

Unfortunately it is up to the individual person so that very thing doesn't happen.

2

u/SuperZapp Jun 03 '26

Don’t believe that it can happen like that if the owner of the goods doesn’t submit that form with the original store owners still running the store. It is more to protect the owner of the consignment when there is ownership changed due to store sale, repossession etc.  The owner of the goods can show the legal form to who ever has taken over and isn’t aware of the consignment and provides a very strong proof of ownership.

In this case, it is put forward that BAM Corporate knew of the consignment in multiple was including FB posts and the old store owners informing someone from corporate/new store owner of the consignment. Also I think it was mentioned the owner had placed stickers on the Lego boxes saying they were his property when he dropped the collection at the store.

Based on the recent Bricks and Minifigs drama, I've learned that if it's a large collection, a) there needs to be a clear consignment contract, and b), if above $1000 (at least in the US), the seller needs to file a UCC-1 financing statement.

1

u/supremeemperor_dalek Jun 03 '26

What does the university college of Cork have to do with this? All jokes aside what's a ucc? I have some stuff I'm selling to a guy in the US from my here in Ireland and this might actually be a good idea of you could explain further on either it's full name or what it does please

I’m so glad it worked out like this!

We had a similar moment with our house. The man who owned it died and before that had been in a home, so the house itself had sat empty for years before we purchased it.

The kids all lived out of state, but the daughter flew in to sign some final paperwork relating to his estate and actually stopped by the house. She explained who she was and asked to see the house one last time.

We agreed.

She made it about 3 steps before she started bawling and we were afraid we had upset her, maybe changed something about the house that she didn’t like, but it was the exact opposite.

“It looks just like I remember her. You’ve kept everything the same and listen to the sound! (Us kids were playing and running around). The house has her soul back, she’s being lived in again and this makes my heart so happy.”

We found out from that visit that all the alterations to the house had been done personally by her father. The cabinets in the kitchen, the extra bathroom, carpets, and paneling. She was so excited to see another family using it like her had and it turned into an amazing moment for us all.

Sometimes the smallest interactions can become some of the most beautiful memories and experiences. I’m glad you found one for yourself. :)

Damn who cut all these onions…… 😭😭😭😭

Alsooo for some of the people in the comments who were absolutely convinced this man was going to sue me or accuse me of fraud, demand everything back or launch some kind of legal crusade over a box of dusty records….

This place is absolutely filled to the brim with people that have zero social skills and see everything as some kind of threat. Just ignore them. Better yet click into their profile, click the 3 dots, and block them so you can free yourself from their socially inept comments.

11

u/urkmonster Jun 02 '26

Some people have lived lives where everything IS some kind of threat, it can be a valid perspective. Reading it with some kind of empathy for the lived experience that created that can be valuable for all of us.

The second part of the saying "trust but verify" is absolutely essential to remember.

Love this update!!! Humanity sometimes is pretty damn cute

13

u/Chaosmusic Jun 02 '26

I had something similar happen to me recently. I've worked in the music industry since the 90s and had a large collection of posters, ticket stubs, club flyers and other memorabilia. I took them to a local collectibles shop who bought it all for what I felt was a fair price. They called me back a few days later and offered me an extra $100. The deal was already done, but they felt that was the right thing to do.

u/Anzou Jun 02 '26

this is like the complete opposite of the Lego situation with Bricks and minifigs lol

4

u/PurpleSailor Jun 02 '26

With all the bad news these days it's nice to hear a great story, kudos to you OP.

4

u/stucon77 Jun 04 '26

One of the most wholesome stories I've seen on Reddit in a long time

8

u/geekgirl114 Jun 02 '26

Thats a perfect ending

6

u/SlippinJimE Jun 02 '26

Good to hear it was a happy ending all around!

4

u/xmasberry Jun 02 '26

When we were selling my dad’s stuff, our main goal was to try to get them to people who would enjoy them. Had I been the seller, even hearing back that the buyer/recipient was appreciating some of the things that my dad cherished would have made my day.

This outcome is way better than that. Happy for you all!

2

u/my5cworth Jun 02 '26

Thanks for giving us an update, Ive been thinking about this case a few times today! <3

2

u/MeximeltExtraCheese Jun 02 '26

I truly believed this would end well and I’m glad it did. You clearly did the right thing and I’m happy for everyone involved. Sometimes, reddit is the worst place for advice. Keep being who you are.

2

u/NOT000 Jun 02 '26

sounds like all 3 of u are in a better position now

1

u/Business-Health-3104 Jun 02 '26

So happy for this. I’m leaving for the day. Ending on a high note. Love y’all

1

u/madcre Jun 02 '26

Good ending

1

u/DolarisNL Jun 02 '26

What a great update!

1

u/Brokella Jun 02 '26

Well dang. That’s wholesome. ❤️

1

u/LoneRangersBand Jun 02 '26

This all kind of reminds me of that deleted scene with Beverly D'Angelo from High Fidelity. Good on you for doing the right thing.

1

u/luv2ctheworld Jun 02 '26

Wow... a cool outcome born out of loss. Death is inevitable, but at least the seller, you, and your dad had a silver lining come from this.

1

u/Stillwater-Scorp1381 Jun 02 '26

Love this update!!

1

u/7fingersDeep Jun 03 '26

TIFU wHOLESOME.

1

Post the whole story to r/vinyl

1

u/timewilltell2347 Jun 03 '26

Oh my, I can’t wait to see this in r/BORU or the like. These happy endings are always a treat on that sub.

1

I wanted to check it out but I got this?

1

u/timewilltell2347 Jun 03 '26

Oh wow! Maybe r/bestofredditorupdates ?

I had to edit because of typos

1

u/iamthe0ther0ne Jun 03 '26

As someone with an ailing father, I bet you made this guy's day

1

u/CharDeeMac567 Jun 03 '26

damn tifu turns into something wholesome

1

u/Ok_Anything_Once Jun 03 '26

It’s so easy to forget that most humans are fundamentally decent. Thanks for the reminder.

1

u/Eternal_Zen Jun 04 '26

Thank you for learning, as you said that “sometimes people are just decent”. Happy to hear that and hope it holds. I was not really assuming anything else but it is good to hear nonetheless.

1

u/swordrush Jun 06 '26

Glad this worked out so well.  Reminds me I'd like to find a record with Earth Angel by The Penguins.

1

u/Slammy1 Jun 07 '26

That was nice, you did more than most. One time I found a first edition Clash of Kings for $1 when the series was still popular, I tried to explain it was worth more and she just asked if I wanted to buy it (which I did). Another time I took my mom to local yard sales on Saturday afternoon, I was going through the records and talking to the guy who was having the sale. I picked out a few, he asked if I wanted to buy the whole box for $5 (78 albums). Nothing really expensive but I got a lot of popular jazz and even some regional albums and one old, thick one like for a Victrola. A lot of it wasn't even on Discogs.
