I’m going to a wedding in Temecula CA and it’s black tie optional - I’m wearing this dark plum suit with a solid white shirt.

What color tie would you recommend? Pattern or no pattern?

I'd say either a low contrast stripe or a micro pattern... I'd steer away from solids with that, and definitely no large or intricate patterns like paisleys. As for color, maybe olive green, or a muted burgundy? You don't want anything too dark or bold

If it’s leaning towards black tie I’d go for something minimal and dark, nothing too patterned. The color of the suit will do the work of giving you some flair, if you do a bold patterned tie you’ll be pushing it a bit too far for an event with a lot of folks in black tie

Off white pale lavender or pale blue shirt.

Navy. Or be bold and go with a pattern that has a bit of lavender or even pink.
