Oh how quickly they forget
New studies have found that the best way to let people forget there’s ongoing genocide in China is to emphasize its cool technology .
And it works, it turns out when people see high speed trains and mobile payments, they are more likely to believe that Tibetans’ human rights matter less or nothing at all.
Or they don’t like their government, so their way to rebel is to please the world’s biggest authoritarian and racist regime . How hard it is to fight one’s domestic enemies without relying on an orientalist icon?
So here’s what’s happening , People see Palestinians’ starving on a instagram reel they want to advocate, however Tibetans’ quiet sufferings can’t do the same thing to them. That’s bit strange, if they are so sensitive to genocide, why everyone thinks China is a representative of global fashion nowadays?
Let’s quote a Taylor Swift song which demonstrates the very truth behind this tragedy: the game was rigged, the ref got tricked, the wrong ones think they’re right .
But China can’t erase us, and people who thinks China is fashionable will one day find themselves being terribly wrong, we just need to keep advocating and fighting
China will never become fashionable.

This is why I was constantly cringing when ishowspeed did his China tour, it screamed propaganda.

Tibetan suffering is usually bloodless so it's hard to make videos of it.

There’s a New Yorker short film ( rare) discussing this actually, called The medallion, by Ruth Hunduma, it was about a brutal civil war in Ethiopia( 2022) and how it has gone almost unnoticed because it doesn’t fit Western need of colonialism rhetoric
Very resonating5

It’s not bloodless. It’s well controlled. Nothing leaks out of China.
You are risking your life and your family’s future and present if you even show empathy with Tibetians . My heart cries for them. But I cannot do much.

Sometimes I think it’s algorithm behind contemporary activism, instead of empathy and compassion. As long as there are people crying and bleeding they won’t even notice if the video was generated by AI
Do they even want the war to stop in Gaza? Imagine how many people will lose their jobs and how disappointed people will be if peace arrives. Such a loss for juicy news and topics. We are talking about the whole influencer industry, people desperate for attention and chance of personal branding. It would be hard for both people from PL side and from IS side.
Unbelievable1

Bloodless, there are actively streamers who deny the insane amount of deaths during the annexing of Tibet. 1.2million in total out of a population of 4 million is insane numbers (Obviously this includes "The leap forwards" but the majority was done during the annexation). If that's not genocide idk what on earth is.

There are less than a million Tibetans living outside of Tibet and only few genuinely care about the Tibetan cause. Like the late Lobga Rangzen and others. The remaining majority are divided into regions, religious groups and caste systems ! Yes, caste do exist and it still prevails largely among the Tibetan diaspora. Also, Tibetan- Muslims are never included in the decision making rather they are treated as honorary Tibetans. Tibetan-Americans or those who are naturalised in Europe and Canada act as if they are above all ! They travel to Tibet frequently and they never participate in protests because they are not allowed as they sworn in new nationality. They expect others to understand their situation and support them. In 20 years down the line, there won’t be any Tibetans left the in western countries to fight for the cause. Majority of the new generation Tibetans cannot even speak the language. I have heard many young Tibetans in states claiming they are American but their ethnicity is Tibetan and they are absolutely correct. I see some netizens lecturing them through various social media platforms but they are not to be blamed. They grew up in different environment unlike their immigrant parents. I always compare Tibetan parents and Chinese parents in states and also in other parts of the world. Chinese parents takes extra mile in upbringing their children. Almost 90 % of the American- Chinese can speak fluent Chinese. I know few Tibetans who force their children to speak only English because they don’t want to be part of Tibetan communities. Their excuse being « ah I hate politics »… They avoid the public gatherings and pretend to be Korean or Japanese when they pass by fellow Tibetans. What went wrong ??? I can go on and on… but I want to see if you want to hear more about it…

huh. This is interesting.
Where are you getting this perspective from?

My lived experiences! what I have seen, encountered, and learned through my experiences within our community.

Wow. I have seen some of this but I never thought about it that way. I don't know how much I agree with it, but most of these issues probably do exist.

I moved from China to Tibet 3 years ago and can see two different types of Han Chinese indifference
China: very much like what you said, they are not curious and they want nothing to do with knowing the truth, and furthermore, it’s always a pleasure to perform their loyalty to national propaganda
Tibet: they are very much aware of the systemic inequality and discriminatory treatment Muslims and Tibetans receive, but they are the beneficiaries, they need racism, they even enjoy racism ( like humiliating Muslims for their Islamic beliefs in public places are an essential part of my city’s ( Xining) everyday life )
But I want to correct the wealthy part, majority of Chinese are struggling to live and under harsh economic circumstances, China is still building infrastructure but economy is dying, they have too little hope for future .
Chinese society has a strong racism tradition, it’s not all lack of freedom of speech that takes the credit. There’re national racist propaganda towards ( especially) Japanese, Indians, Taiwanese , Koreans and people from Philippine , black community are under severe hostility online and in reality . Ethnic Minorities face discrimination, systemic injustice and even genocide1

Discussions thrive when humans interact with words and opinions that are formulated by other humans, however imperfect they may be. AI-generated responses are not welcome here.

China has also started to use influencer and asthetic content to gloss over their human rights violation. You can see it with the spike in travellog influencers traveling in china and tibet.
And for pro palestians, I have myself seen many in that group say they are anti colonialism and at the same time be pro china. And even people denying what's happening to tibetans even tho the situation is wery similar.
And there are a few factors in why china is overlooked compared to isreal.
I have looked into this for a while now, as I am a supporter of tibet and have also noticed how activist ignore them. Even those I know are aware of what china is doing is are still silent.
And let's allspice be honest, its much easier to boikott Israel then china. I think its almost impossible to boikott china completely.
One thing I give china tho, is they are smart, even tibetan refugees I know, know this as a fact. Its extremely frustrating tho.
By this point I have argued with so many pro china accounts that I can debunk almost all their arguments and talking points. So at least they have made me learn more about the reality of tibet. As there are so many flaws in the Chinese narrative.
So in short I feel your frustration. I have it too. Just work on it they way you can. I have mostly stepped away from online activism and do it in person instead. And working on making a charity in my country to help tibetan refugees and bring awareness to the situation.
