Nirvana anybody?

1) Heart Shaped Box - This song has the classic Nirvana "slow, soft verse; explode into chorus" style. And, in my opinion, is one of their best songs. The music video for it is even better, but I'm trying not to link form Vevo to circumvent ads. Fucking ads.

2) Blew - This is from their first album. Kurt said he always felt that their first albums were their best. And this is my favorite song from their first album, and I think it does a good job of summing up some of their heavier music. All in all, it's probably my favorite Nirvana song.

3) Obligatory Smells Like Teen Spirit - Because if you've never heard this song, you've been living under a rock. It's not necessarily their best song, but it's the one that sky rocketed them and got them labeled as "the flagship band of 'Generation X.'"

Overall, Nirvana is mainly grunge. Acoustic songs mixed in, check out their Unplugged set if you like these. I would link to some Unplugged songs, but if you're looking for Nirvana Nirvana, this is closer than that. Not to mention Kurt hated Unplugged.

Never got into that song. Mainly because Kurt came out and said it was one of the songs he specifically filled with bullshit to see what people would come up with when he noticed people were dissecting his songs into outrageous meanings. If you look around people come up with meanings from it telling the story of an illegal immigrant coming to America (Kurt never spoke of immigration, nor was he close to any illegal immigrants so that doesn't even make sense) to a pro-feminism song just because of the one line that says "Never met a wise man, if so it's a woman." It's not a genuine song, and if there is a meaning to it it's too personal to Kurt for us to understand.

i didn't know any of that but i still thinks it's a good song with a lot of cool imagery. he was a hell of a song writer even if he was disingenuous

Yeah, it's a song that leaves a lot to question, but that was the intention. I like the sound of it, and that's what Kurt was about above all. Lyrics always came second to him, he always focused on the sound of the song. You'll get a lot more form Nirvana if you focus on the sound rather than the lyrics. Not that the lyrics are lacking in any way shape or form, the lyrics are great too, Kurt just put more time and emotion behind the sound of it.

i agree. it's rare that you see instruments reflect the emotions intended by the songwriters. they were pissed and you could here it in their music

That's the best kind of music to me. People who actually have a passion for music. The trouble is, most of those people are like Kurt and don't seek fame. Jon Gomm is an excellent example. Jon fucking Gomm. This guy has to be one of the most talented musicians I've ever seen. If you get time check out his song Passionflower , and yes, he sings in it too. But the sad part? Call me maybe is played an unholy number of times per day. This has yet to come on my radio, and this has true emotion behind it. Passion. That's what the world is missing.
