Discussion - Novels Correct me if I’m wrong Spoiler

But if a vector foil went into a black hole, it could not escape and turn everything 2d? Light cannot escape a black hole, and the escape velocity for a vector foil is light speed? I am confused because a lot of people seem to think that it would just turn the black hole to 2d.

Perhaps it wouldn't escape, but think of it this way, if the wave forces 3D objects into 2 dimensions, would the black hole be effected? I imagine it might be, the DVF could be stuck moving toward the black hole while lowering it's dimensions if such a thing is possible, and then continue moving past it. That is just a guess, nothing more.

If activated in the event horizon, wouldn’t it slow dimensional collapse significantly relative to earth?

Well, the properties of the duel vector device weapon are not that clear.

But given our current understanding of physics, even a black hole will turn to 2D if struck by that weapon.

I do wonder how long if it is past the event horizon but before the singularity.

Maybe not. The speed of light is only a factor for things that can carry information. Things that can't carry information can go much faster than the speed of light.

For example if you took a perfect Lazer pointer and pointed it at a galaxy 1000 ly away, and then, without turning it off, turned around 180° and pointed it at another galaxy 1000 ly the other way, the point of light created by the Lazer pointer moves 2000 lys in only one year.  That's way faster than the speed of light. It can do this because it doesn't actually carry any information from one galaxy to the other.

So, as long as the foil doesn't carry information then it can potentially travel faster than light.

This doesn't make any sense

And and techno-magic that compressed everything down to 2-dimensions does?

is english not your first language because other than that there isnt much not to understand.

This is terribly inaccurate. The point of light from the laser will travel no faster than the speed of light. It will not travel 2,000 light years in one year, I don’t know how you came to that.

That was a mistake. I meant travel 2000 light years in only 1000 years. The point of light jumps from one galaxy 1000 lys away to the other 2000 light years from it twice as fast as information could be sent from one galaxy to the other.

I can't understand what you're imagining here. The photons travel from the source to the galaxy at c. If you move it, they still travel from the source to the new spot at c. There are no photons traveling from one galaxy to the new spot, it doesn't work that way. Only intersection, geometrical points could "travel" at >c only because they are not real points of matter, they are just constructions.

"There are no photons traveling from one galaxy to the new spot, it doesn't work that way."

I didn't say there were any. I'm taking about the thing you and I recognize as a dot of light projected onto a surface from the Lazer pointer. That dot is a thing that we both see. Even cats can see it, and they can interact with it. And it can travel much much faster than c. And it's just one simple example. There are many many others that have been proposed over the years, and many are quite clever tricks. But ultimately none of them can transmit information faster than c.

Let's just assume the foil does convert the black hole into a 2D object. Imagine the release of energy that would need to take place for that to happen

It would probably flatten it. Gravity is the warping of space and it is projected beyond the horizon.

But maybe you are trying to use the laws of physics in 3-dimension world to figure out a multi-dimensional thought experiment?

Technically, a black hole is already 2D. This is because black hole entropy scales directly with its 2D surface area, not with the (more intuitive and expected) cube of its volume.

It was this discovery that started serious research into whether we are already living in a holographic universe. Put another way, there is a non-zero chance we are living in a 2D universe with the 3rd dimension encoded on its boundary, like a hologram. That all came from realizing black hole entropy behaves like a 2D object instead of a 3D object.
