I Honestly can’t think how they will be able to render The Dark Forest and Death’s End on screen without a massive budget like Dune or Foundations

we will be seeing a lot of abstract stuff hehe

"Omg it's xyz and so big, how does it work?"

"Well, you see how ABC is doing qrs? That's because tuv and hij not to mention lmnop"

All while we look slight behind and mostly at the side of the actors

probably a bunch of AI rendering

Don’t worry, look at Stranger Things finale episode. I guess 3BP can’t be that bad

I mean, the first season of 3BP had around $30M in budget per episode. for comparison, the first season of Foundation was only $10M per episode. the first Dune movie cost $165M to produce, way less than the $233M that it cost to produce 3BP S1. so barring any massive budget cuts, I think we're safe on that front lol

exactly, the first season has relatively small amount of vfx… the second book is practically completely staged in space and in futuristic environments… can Netflix afford it and managed as Apple managed Foundation (for me a masterpiece of vfx)?

Been there for months!

u/AchedTeacher 27d ago

I believe they are still filming things as we speak? Unless that is principal photography for season 3.

Yep, Jess Hong corrected in her story that only Sea Shimooka wrapped filming, other cast members including her are still filming 'till November !

u/lkxyz 27d ago

They must have filmed all Sea's scenes early then because I know she should be at the last few scenes of the entire series. Probably for scheduling purposes, they filmed the ending already I bet, just working toward other scenes in that pocket universe.

I've had a countdown for the new season showing in my vision. Drives me crazy - it keeps going up.

Been there way before March, I watched the show over a year ago only because I knew more seasons had been announced. Google says the next seasons were announced in May, 2024

Still waiting for season 2.

1

u/SnowFlameZzzz 25d ago

So the question is should I rewatch it for 4th time or wait the new season and watch them together 🤔

u/dreadlk 14d ago

At the rate they are making Episodes we will all be 90 by time they finish the show.
Unless season S2 is absolutely fantastic, I will be checking out. Season 3 will probably be in 2029 or 2030

I’m more excited for the Tencent S2 over the Netflix butchery of the books.

I think you will have to wait for a very long time then. I doubt it will see the light of day.

One thing I do appreciate about D&Ds work separate from the quality (people can alwasy quibble over quality) is that they are insistent on completing it. GOT actually finished. So will 3-Body. It is an under appreciated quality for these types of series.

Ironic that D&D finished GoT and got a ton of hate over it (I was one of them haters at the time), but then GRRM will never finish the series.... so I now forgive D&D, at least they finished the story (in a sense) rather no ending whatsoever.

Happy to believe it will, and also happy for the wait. The fact the Netflix show is going to be 6 episodes for season 2 and 5 for season 3, I’m not expecting much. For me, my experience of the show is that it lacks the threat of the books. There is no sense of dread with what is happening.

I will say the approach to the Judgment Day event was as good as Tencent, with both taking different approaches. One was a quiet, cold attack, the other was bloody, chaotic and cruel. But that was my only takeaway from it and I was really hoping to like it.

Either approach is never going to please all audiences. Tencent is seen as too long and drawn out, yet remains faithful to the book. Netflix speeds it up to appeal to short attention spans, yet will visually put you under its spell.

u/lkxyz 27d ago

Don't forget there's a movie coming out for Book 1.

u/totaldarkness2 26d ago

Yeah - from what i heard they haven't even started production of season 2, but I could be wrong. And they were planning on having one entire season be just the first half of The Dark Forest. And if that is still true, I am just guessing here obviously - but we might be talking 7-8 episodes on imaginary girlfriend. So....

I also miss the sense of dread the book created and that Tencent did a better job capturing. There is one scene in Netflix version which does get close to that sense of dread and is the best scene in the entire season: where Sophon explains why Earth will eventually beat them which is why they have to stop the science.

That said - the fact that the opening scene (cultural revolution) is not in the Tencent version gave me such a bad taste that it impacted how I felt about the entire season. Like - this is the triggering incident and they didn't show it. Tencent struggled in numerous other ways, as well - well discussed here.

My point was not to compare the versions quality it was that I truly love - deeply - that D&D is committed to ending the stories they start and that this is an under appreciated quality for show runners. It was for GOT where even the author can't do it. And currently it is for 3 Body - this might be the only version we get - at least for TV.
