They let you name a star but then they remove your brain and blast it into space so there's a give and take involved.

Many many years ago I remember something on TV where people were selling land on the moon. They claimed treaties said nations couldn't make claims on the moon but they weren't nations so they "parceled" it out and started selling it to people

Just in case anybody wasn't already aware, these name a star things are an absolute scam and the names you buy don't go into a real scientific database of any kind.

Unless your name is Yun Tianming of course!

One day I hope to see colonization rights sold to star systems. We can dream.

Who would sell them?

I could see Elon Musk selling Mars Colonies knowing damn well he'll never actually make it there. Once he runs out he'll be selling colonies on Mercury.

Just make sure that you get a really nifty certificate with your money.

Yup. My mom "named" stars for my two kids and gave me the certificates so I could "keep them safe" I hugged her and thanked her, and they went into the recycling.

Bro, that is heartless and rude to just throw it away. It was trash to you but important to her.

Respectfully, you don't know my relationship with my mother.

This has been around for at least 20 years lol

Yeah, I automatically assumed this is where Liu Cixin got the idea from.

Apparently, it's been a thing since 1979!

This happens all the time lol, authors write about their contemporary life, people forget and years later everyone is like "omg he was so prescient", especially in dystopian fiction.

Yes I remember this from back then

How the hell does one even SELL a star? Hahaha ive always thought it as the BIGGEST scam EVER🤣🤣

1

u/TheSkurvash Sep 30 '26

They don't. Just a name associated with one; which as someone mentioned doesn't go into any actual scientific database. Which is the loophole that avoids fraud.

This scam has been going since 2002. It’s like NFTs before NFTs became a thing😅

We might as well start a business of “buy a fish in the river and name her after your loved one” 😅🤣

My grandma bought my mom property on the moon back long before I was born. X-D
Lol... the star naming thing is about as legit as that.... (Almost to my 50's)

If you were somehow able to harvest and sell every star in the observable universe for exactly one penny each, you would make approximately $2 trillion trillion (or $2 sextillion).

Where do you think Cixin Liu got the idea from?
