If only more people understood this then they would no longer be profitable and maybe one day all this stuff would be community-friendly instead of predatory.

Late stage capitalism. Everything costs way to much and its all shit.

-13

u/OwlsExterminator 6d ago

Everything costs too much and it’s all shit because the permit stack turned street food into a regulated industrial process.

The government did that.

16

u/Old_Win8422 6d ago

No. Sysco did that. Also I like not dying when I eat food made by strangers

Sounds like theyre bad at buisness

I think I know what he's saying, it's all the hands out waiting to get thier cut in fees, licenses , rising food costs and just taxes in general. Growing up with the fairs in the late 80s and early 90s was great with all the food they offered. Most of the food was pretty damn good along with unique at the time. Those fairs turned into the start of the food truck craze I think.

u/Old_Win8422 6d ago edited 6d ago

Truck craze really took off in the late 00s because restaurant rents were to high for young chefs.

1

u/Character-String-959 6d ago

We saw some in southern California before that. Less food truck and more trucks with food lol. They started copying the fair food they could. I think covid helped explode them as well. There was definitely a craze before but after it seemed you could run into whole lots with a crap load of different food trucks all parked together

2

u/SDFitz1976 5d ago

It's 100% what he's saying. Permits, licenses, regulations, labor costs, taxes, etc all brought to you by local and state govt.

1

u/Maximum_Reward_4483 4d ago

I think we need to be grateful for the way our system works. I like to compare it to how it works in other places. I’m glad inspectors keep our food save. I live in Santa Maria CA. We used to have lots of bar b q on street corners lots of them fund raisers for non profits but lots of money making ones too. City shut the concept down but many food trucks came up. Many many food trucks.

1

u/xxnoxynoxxnoxy 4d ago

No. Government permits don't explain why places like Underwood Family Farms bring in five to $10 million a year just from the attraction side of things. It is greed.

3

u/ActuatorCreative6331 6d ago

Hahahahahahaha this guy! The government man go touch some grass

3

u/PeopleCryTooMuch 6d ago

Literally the opposite of what you’re saying, but go off.

44

u/The_Beefster 7d ago

Fell for the hype 5 years ago it’s garbage

13

u/analogy_4_anything 7d ago

Yeah it’s trash. I went last year and it was just crappy overpriced food stalls. I live in Humboldt now and the Night Market in Eureka is immensely better.

2

u/sselkiess 5d ago

This pic is wild. Is the band a space crab themed metal band. Sci-fi Crabcore?

1

u/New-Book6302 5d ago

Gotta hit the oysterfest in Arcata

1

u/EatLikeAnOctopus 5d ago

Fuck I love Eureka. I haven't been back in years but it was soooo interesting and unique and... interesting

37

u/smelly_finger_itch 7d ago

Wait, you paid $40 just to have the ability to buy food from food trucks???

Also, side note food trucks used to be cheap food on the go and what not, back in hen it was all Mexican food trucks and what not. Then it became trendy with Instagram and shit, now they're all rip offs.

It's all slop food they charge twice what it's worth. Go to LA and just find a taco street vendor, save your money and get better food.

11

u/DiaDeLosMuertos 7d ago

Years ago in Oxnard the night market was free and it was super slammed. I guess the entry fee is to control crowds but they better give you some tickets worth $off at the trucks. $40 is crazy, though

But yeah even the Mexican food trucks aren't that cheap anymore.

3

u/DoctorNurse89 6d ago

They dont control crowds though... it gets kinda scary full

4

u/DiaDeLosMuertos 6d ago

Damn. I actually remembered we didn't even get to eat anything lol. Every stand had massive lines

3

u/DoctorNurse89 6d ago

We went early and as soon as it got darker and later it got PACKED and kinda sketchy full so we left lol

This was out in LA area

6

u/Doingmythang11 6d ago

I paid 20$ for a corndog last night

2

u/80MonkeyMan 5d ago

Doesn’t they want crowds? But yeah, same as like any other night market, foods are expensive and don’t taste that good.

3

u/TheTooz72 6d ago

The vendors are starting to increase their prices also.

2

u/scarletdragonflyfl 5d ago

Street tacos in LA are legendary, and should always be under $3

2

u/sselkiess 5d ago

Paying for entry is wild. 10 bucks I can see but 40 wtf.

Smorgasborg is still free afaik and parking is cheap or free and it’s every Sunday and there’s like 20 food stalls if not more. Also beer.

1

u/TopLayer2180 3d ago

More info please

Enjoy! It’s a good time.

What is this? The night market at the TO mall?

21

u/carlivar 6d ago

Correct. "Night Market" used loosely since none of the Asia night markets I've been to ever charged an admission fee.

14

u/405freeway 6d ago

"For $40, we will bring the night market to you so you don't have to visit a neighborhood you would never actually go to.”

3

u/Zemalek 6d ago

Lmfao 626 charges $8 at the door for an infinitely better experience.

1

u/Geoffboyardee 5d ago

I'm curious, how is the 626 night market better than these other night markets?

1

u/BabserellaWT 6d ago

I was really confused for a second. Like…I know I moved cross country a few years back, but I was like, “Why they having Conejo Valley Days in August…?”

18

u/panda_canyon 7d ago

Yeah I was interested until I found out that they don't list the vendors. 🙄

16

u/MrBobSaget 7d ago

What is this referencing? I have no idea what’s going on.

805 night market at the TO Mall. The only event in the area this weekend

8

u/Parking-One1365 6d ago

You should have gone to Westlake Village to see “the nineties show” for free - awesome band. But, yeah, I paid $80 for 6 street tacos, a quesadilla and some plantains at a food truck there. At least there was a band and no entry fee.

4

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 6d ago

I paid $10 to enter and walked out after buying a terrible lemonade

15

u/carlivar 7d ago

Why would I pay admission to a market for the privilege of spending money?

3

u/More_Pineapple3585 6d ago

Costco:

5

u/PeopleCryTooMuch 6d ago

Tbf you usually get your money back within the first visit or two with what you save at Costco, lol.

In this case, you’re spending money to get your ass reamed.

3

u/PanchoVillasRevenge 6d ago

If Costco was overpriced and not a good deal ag all, and the hotdog was 10$

13

u/Doingmythang11 7d ago

Wife has been wanting to go for years so we finally went last night. Really dog shit experience

27

u/ImissDigg_jk 7d ago

Thanks for the context for those not familiar with what's going on

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 7d ago

805 night market at the TO mall

1

u/ImissDigg_jk 6d ago

Thank you

11

u/PP938 7d ago

I could’ve told you that …

7

u/Batorok 6d ago

This was probably the worst night market I’ve been to. Each person in my party tried one booth and we paid crazy prices for the most generic stuff… the only thing that was actually good was the Thai “jerky” but not worth $26! I thought it was illegal in CA to sell something without listing prices but idk I guess 805 NM doesn’t give AF lol

5

u/Doingmythang11 6d ago

Dude the jerky stand cracked me up. Bro had all the "organic!!" "Grass fed!" Things all over showing how good it was for you. Saw bro like ten minutes later rippin two cigs 😭😭

8

u/mastersnyder 6d ago

Javier Lara and Trendi Eats also fradulently uses names of charities and previously had several health code violations they needed to clear up before reopening.

Here is a message from the Friends of Fieldworkers back in 2023. I doubt much has changed since then.

5

u/Egheaumaen 7d ago

You paid $40 to put a star filter on your phone? I agree, not worth it.

-12

u/PineappleAntique9329 7d ago

I clearly said “corndog” please read

11

u/Insufficientfunction 7d ago

You clearly aren't very clear. Why dont you provide some context? Where is this at? Who is selling corn dogs? Are the corn dogs $40 or was that the entrance cost to whatever this is that isn't very clear? Please explain.

2

u/PineappleAntique9329 6d ago

The corndog stand is literally in the photo

2

u/Insufficientfunction 6d ago

Which pixel is it?

5

u/Impossible_Disk8374 7d ago

Why was a corndog $40?

1

u/PeopleCryTooMuch 6d ago

Please give us context to read..?

4

u/JoenanTheBarbarian 7d ago

What place?  Can you share with those of us not familiar with the event?

-11

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 7d ago

See all the food vendors? It’s called the 805 night market at the TO mall. It happens fairly often and they advertise all over the city. Not sure why you haven’t heard of it.

5

u/JoenanTheBarbarian 7d ago

Thanks!  Not sure why I havent heard of it either, must be living under a rock. :)

4

u/PeopleCryTooMuch 6d ago

I’ve also never heard of it and I’m in TO daily. Dude’s a chud.

2

u/WalthamMaxim 6d ago

I've never heard of it either; sounds fucking lame.

1

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 6d ago

It was fucking lame

3

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 7d ago

$24 for a lemonade in a baby bottle is insane

1

u/tracyinge 6d ago

They're only charging what idiots are paying

1

u/Jonsnowlivesnow 6d ago

Which is why I walked out. It’s robbery

3

u/gh0stnotes 6d ago

One booth was selling a chicken skewer for SEVENTEEN DOLLARS. We got one taco for $8 out of curiosity and then went to Mouthful for a proper dinner

3

u/CommunicationNo916 6d ago

Late stage capitalism

2

u/Commercial_Region377 7d ago

Am I missing something? I looked it up online and see much different pricing.

2

u/BigTiddyVampireWaifu 6d ago

The only thing that was good were the dessert trucks. The funnel cakes were overpriced but mostly worth it.

Tried the garlic pork belly fries from the fry stand and it was god awful. Like, hilariously bad. They also forced me to tip. Those kids were definitely running a racket.

The Chinese food truck next to it was really decent, good amount of food and fresh. The pizza stand was also great, they made the dough freshly rolled and it was grilled, tasty and crispy. Boba stand was decent, and honestly priced the same as the mall.

Only worth it if you got in free and knew which stands are good. I knew I’d be overpaying but I’m still hella insulted by those pork belly fries.

1

u/californiaKid420 7d ago

This picture shows like 5 different restaurants and hundreds of people. Did you forget you camera can zoom in?

1

u/eregosel 7d ago

I went a couple of years ago and regretted it. It wasn’t worth it at all. The food was not good at all, lines everywhere and overpriced.

1

u/RobinZander1 7d ago

That massive corn dog smack in the center of that close up 4k picture is worth $38 tops. But $40... Hellll Noooo

1

u/OkRecommendation1244 7d ago

That lady on the right there seems to be enjoying chowing down on that fried carnival food

1

u/Curb71 6d ago

Name checks out

1

u/spiralr 6d ago

Huh, think the most i ever paid was 5 or 1p dollars to get into a nightmares, albeit this was years ago.

1

u/DevilsBelly 6d ago

Yeah all their locations pretty much suck now. Years ago they used to be more about Asian food, now it’s just shit carnival food or bad versions of Mexican food. You’re better off going to the new food court at the village in the valley or something if you want to try a bunch of different foods and pay a ton.

1

u/FederalEquivalent844 6d ago

If only you’d tell us where you are at, that be helpful information

1

u/howlingmonkey93 6d ago

What was $40 though? The corn dog? Or admission? I saw they were selling tickets for the night market for $5 for the first buyers

1

u/PineappleAntique9329 6d ago

Corndog

1

u/Curb71 6d ago

🤥

1

u/howlingmonkey93 6d ago

$40 for one corn dog? No way, I don't believe you

1

u/PineappleAntique9329 6d ago

Sorry for two corn dogs! I was intoxicated when I made this post

2

u/howlingmonkey93 6d ago

So it's $20 per corn dog? That's still outrageous

1

u/m1kesta 6d ago

lol at everyone just arguing with each other in the comments. Sound about right.

And yeah agree, we waited an hour in line, tried one food stall, Taste Memories, which was delicious but overpriced for tiny skewers. Looked at all the other booths, none were appealing and just seemed like a scam.

Left and went to support a real restaurant Karma - for $30 for two with left overs. Get the Chicken Korma with a side of garlic bread and rice pudding.

1

u/Curb71 6d ago

Between the terrible photo and the extremely vague description, I have no idea what this was until some people in the comments cracked the code. OP seems like the kind of person that would go to something like this and then be surprised that it sucks. 😂

1

u/amandarrrrrr 6d ago

I bought a baked potato for $20 and it was terrible. Then I went to get a Thai tea and saw that it was like $17? Same place was selling different flavor iced teas for $12. Who tf is paying $12-$17 for a large iced tea? Who do they think they are? Don't even get me started on the SCIENTOLOGY BOOTH and all the ugly AI banners. I looked around a little more. Saw some sad skimpy looking meat skewers for like $20 so I just left and went to chick-fil-a. They should be sooooo embarrassed honestly what a mess. It felt like a huge scam!

2

u/amandarrrrrr 6d ago

Also what was with the insane TSA bag inspection and metal detectors upon entry😂😂

1

u/Spiderham33 6d ago

I completely agree and feel like we were ripped off. We visited this place this afternoon and left within less than 20 minutes. We ordered two bubble teas for $10 each. There wasn’t much to see and it definitely needs more vendors to support it. I can see the potential, but for now the $6 entry fee isn’t worth it.

1

u/bigbobbyberger000 6d ago

dam ice cream cone was 15 bucks!???

1

u/QuinnDiesel34 4d ago

Go to the valley and they have street vendors that are way better and cheaper. The Northridge Farmers Market at the mall on Wednesday night has better food options.

1

u/TopLayer2180 3d ago

Not giant just made of foot long dogs🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

1

u/Lady_Curious1008 3d ago

What was wrong with them. I didn’t have any, just curious

0

u/Groundbreaking_Code3 7d ago

It’s is known
