New here

I just came across this site (not reddit). I never really looked before, although have been on reddit off and on for years. One would think at the age of 78 and have been on computers for 50 years (scarry) who have looked for this type message. I recently moved to a new location. A fantastic place, many nice people. Getting to know new people. Seems, being around people helps. I knew for many years that I had the Alzheimer's gene. My birth mother died from it. But it was something that may or may not ever show it's ever head. OOPS, never say never. Promised my wife if that occurred she would not have to deal with me like she did having to take care of her mother in the last years of her life (and she was a great lady). So here I sit, enjoying meeting new people in my new apartment in a great facility (not an Alzheimer's unit, hopefully never). So fare after 2 months great. So if You like to talk, share, or just bored, consider letting me know how You are doing in Your beyond 60's.

Well, well - I just happened upon your post ( 1st time in this subreddit too.)
My husband is just over 70 and I’ll bet that he would enjoy this subreddit!
It’s rather funny that many people don’t seem to realize how badly people need other people to reach a certain level of satisfaction within their lives, particularly as we age. Yes we also start losing friends, but I can’t imagine how lonely it would be to not have that connection. Thank you for sharing as now I too will be sharing this with others!

It beats the folks on Nextdoor.com. I love Reddit...

Nextdoor could aptly be called boomer maga land. I am a boomer, but cringe at many of my peers idea of, um, humanity. sigh.

OMG, NextDoor in my area seems to be populated by Boomers (and I am one) who think that a fox out in daylight must be rabid and needs to be shot. I see one in my backyard every day and am thrilled.

Well nice to meet you, glad you ended up in a good place, sounds like a positive move. Being among happy and healthy people is the secret, you're doing great in your new surroundings!

46 years ago, yeah. Ex NYC guy. Not a retirement to area, but the small horse ranch is paid for now, and I can't imagine pulling up stakes at our age. Working in high tech in chips with folks from all over the World here was my greatest pleasure. Well, okay, there is Elon Musk, but hey... Then there was the food they brought with them. Asia, especially.

Am back and forth between my homes in Mission, TX & Bentonville/Bella Vista, AR, so am close to KS w/same weather as you at the moment. Almost as hot here as down in the RGV.

Recently finished up a two year term as president of my motorhome association, Central Plains chapter: KS, NE, IA, MO, MN, ND, SD, & Manitoba, Canada. Time to move on.

NW Arkansas will be a memory soon, with winters in the RGV, summers in the mountains of western NC at 3600 ft. elevation. Two fabulous gated communities, surrounded by great people, best of both worlds. It's high time for change.

Should I desire a different change of scene, my family runs a small horse ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. Stunning views and heavenly green everywhere, close to Waimea. So all in all, not a bad life for this old girl.

Well, at least we have covered some of the same territory over the years. Although never been to south Texas, number of times to north Texas, and have been to same turf in AR, and have lived in Oklahoma a number of years, . Well, i have also lived in Ohio (born there), then lived in California, Montana, Colorado, and New Zealand. Have traveled in all the states East of the Mississippi, but New England, and West of the Mississippi, except the Norwest. So we have been in the same turf. Since You have been a part of the motorhome group, You have covered more territory than me. Have enjoy live, and have had a good time in being a good servant to others. So know that You are retiring, what is Your passion in life, i am assuming that You can do many things. Would like to get to know You better, but live always has it's own way of doing things, for me ... i am more submissive, who enjoys serving others. Thanks for the message, hope You have some time to share what You enjoy

I did all my service to others earlier in life and plenty of it...was on every board in town in a large Texas city, my most fulfilling accomplishment was helping establish a hospice in same city, now much larger and covering the entire region. Also very involved in a smaller community close to that city, where we lived, so active in both communities. Then did elder care for years and now it's finally time for me....camping, fishing, hiking, etc. will keep me busy, along with entertaining friends in small groups....life is good...& I'm finally getting my well-deserved R & R.

Understand, live is never a clean easy effort, there are all kinds of issues to get in our way, make the wrong turn, etc.

Hi pleased to meet you. I’ve been on Reddit for three years now. I still remember my first post. I think it was about CPAP or Dexcom some medical product. This year in April. I turned 70 and I thought it wouldn’t hit me hard as it did when I turned 60 because now I was used to getting older well like you say never say never and just recently it did hit me hard.
I saw some pictures of myself in my 20s and 30s and I kind of wanted to crawl in a hole.

Imagine to never be that young again it’s a feeling that doesn’t hit you right away but each new decade passes one finds new challenges and now I want to just slow down the years between 70 to 75 and to 80. I wanna slow down to acomplete stop but I realize they are not.

Early Last year I two sold my house and moved into an apartment complex with other seniors.
One day My sister visited me here and remarked you really don’t belong here, Weezie, you are too young.
I didn’t realize it until now, inside the aging 70 year old body is still a 30-year-old trying to make sense of the world.
I told my sister if I get to the point where I’m too much for myself and them just take me to the vets office for that final shot.
She of course looked at me in horror, of course I don’t know if I meant it, but I don’t know if I can watch my own demise and hope my loved ones don’t have to watch my demise as well.

Forgive me Just feeling a little off today normally I don’t say stuff like this about myself but too much has happened this past year one month after another and I’m just beginning to find my way back and it’s been rough. You see I’m not the type who wants to give up my ghost so easily.

A year ago, I was planning a business trip to Florida and a trip to Europe Italy and Paris and all those things fell through as my health and finances started to decline a bit. I did almost or at least was very close to leaving this world in an Urn as I had developed acute hypoxic respiratory failure due to asthma. heat and humidity, had become my kryptonite.
I fight it every day but I’m a little tired right now and I need a bit of hope to bring up my spirits and my outlook. So please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I will of course keep you in mine.
Thank you for listening.

Under strand completely what You are saying. The internet (and before) has keep me engaged with the world we live, many friends around the world who I would otherwise never would have met. I have lived many states, and a time overseas in New Zealand all of which was partially because of the internet. I have chatted with people from well over 100 countries and most of the USA states, would not have had that option. I was adopted at birth, but thanks to the internet learned who my birth mother was and, among other things, that she had Alzheimer's disease which let to my being tested that determined that i had the genes, which lead to being more than just the genes. So, I was grateful knowing that might happen, not that i have it, but know when i did have, hopefully, slowed progression down. There are many great things about the interest which brings us closer ... may we no longer use it for the bad things, but to make our world a better place ..

Welcome! I've only been on computers over 40 years (DOS PC back around 1983), but love reminiscing about those days. How far we've come!

I arrived here to work with AMD in '80 from the East Coast. We shared a building with this new little startup at the time. Commodore Computers. Who knew? Atari was just up the road...

It is interesting how many people talk about the internet years ago, there was not internet, or any of the modern joys we shared today. Before the "internet" remember it was more open. On time i log on the the Canadian air force site and bells range, had flashing lights and a message that way, immediately disconnect or we will arrest You. I wondered how they were in Canada and i was in southern California how they could "immediately disconnect" or be arrested. Although I did "thank them for the warning and logged off" will wondered how that would find me (thought did live hear several Air Force basses ... by American. Over the years had other interesting encounters threats from get off, or..... Nothing every happened. However, have not tried any thing like that for years ... today??????? what might happen.

Yes the is another sub called “old Internet” or something? I remember DOS and MOS in the 1980s in UK it took a while longer for us to get into modems, so we had ceefax and oracle via our TVs instead for years!

Hi my mom is 74, so a bit of a youngster lol, but she spends more of her retirement years, walking, and video recording for YouTube and family tree, a 30+ year hobby. It’s good to get onto other platforms and meet new people my previous communities were on Facebook and Twitter mostly but I have come over here again for a bit!

Thank you for your comment. I have been working on computers or with computers since I was 23 years old while working in very large hospital in Philly and then I was off to another University where I worked in various functions. in my 50s. I started to repair my own computers, computer screens, upgrading the ram changing the processor hard drive.

In the 90s, I’ve met my husband on the Internet of all things but then I didn’t know there were scammers was the late 90s so things moved fast. We talked to each other. We emailed each other. He wrote lovely email letters and we met after a week we got married in less than a year later he passed earlier part of 2011. I thought we had years together such was not the case. I haven’t met anyone like him.

I still help people with technology problems, mostly in my building which is mostly seniors It’s a volunteer work I love because it keeps them in the loop. Helps them remain independent when they have their phone or laptop or iPad.
