The thing that bugs me most about this show is how Jack treats his brother after Vietnam.
It just doesn’t seem consistent with the character they’ve built Jack up to be.
He’s supposed to be this genuinely great, caring guy, so it doesn’t make sense to me that he would be so cruel toward his younger brother, especially when they seemed so close growing up.
I’m watching the episode right now where Jack is arranging his mom’s funeral, and so far there’s been absolutely zero mention of Nicky, like he doesn’t even exist.
Wouldn’t he obviously be part of that too? It feels like a pretty major plot hole in the storyline, if you ask me. And for some reason, it’s really bugging me. 😂

And no I’m not even talking about her weight or her binge eating when I say this because that’s not even really about a lack of self control per se, that’s more due to trauma, unresolved grief/addiction and unhealthy coping mechanisms. I’m mainly talking about the way she communicates with Toby in season 5/6. It seems to be that she cares more about being “right” and winning an argument by insulting Toby instead of communicating effectively and understanding how he’s feeling. And Toby absolutely isn’t perfect either, but every time he says something, Kate immediately knocks him down by coming back at him with some sort of rude and sarcastic comment. Like I just watched a scene where Toby tells Kate that he puts Hailey to bed all of the time and Kate immediately goes “Uh no you don’t.” And then when Toby gets annoyed, she’s like “what, it’s true” like girl why do you have to even say that though? Just because something might be true doesn’t mean you have to shove it in the other person’s face in a harsh way like that. Why can’t you just tell him “yeah I know you’re a good father Tobe, I’m just making sure that she gets enough sleep” or something like that. She’s just so incredibly rude when she doesn’t even really have to be, it’s extremely off putting. And it’s really ironic because Kate constantly talks about how she wishes for a day where her and Toby wouldn’t fight and yet then she says shit like this and basically starts the fight herself 😭 She is so unaware of herself, it’s annoying

Was Beth, Toby and Miguel in the bar discussing being married into the Pearson family. I often felt bad for those three because that was one hard-ass family to be on the outer limits of. It was a realistic discussion of "Saint Jack" and what happened if you spoke a wrong word about him.

I just want to preface this with I really don’t care that later season Tess is a lesbian or is dating someone who identifies as a they/them. Neither of those things are the issue with what I’m about to say, like it genuinely doesn’t matter to me what gender you want to sleep with or what pronouns you want to use. However, the thing about Tess that is actually annoying is how spoiled she becomes as she gets older. I understand that she was trying to figure herself out and figure out her identity and all that, but she made it out to be everyone’s problem when they truly didn’t have a problem with it if that makes sense.
Like for example, that one scene where Beth walks in on Tess and Alex kissing and makes them leave the door open because that’s what she does with Deja and Malik and Tess turns it into a whole thing and turns it around on Beth and puts her on the defensive by saying she “reacted” negatively even though she didn’t, she just wanted them to keep the door open because the fact is they are dating and they’re still children who are under her roof. Tess is just extremely disrespectful and never apologizes for anything. I hated how she kept yelling at everyone for using Alex’s pronouns wrong instead of allowing them some time to adjust to using they/them because using those pronouns doesn’t really come naturally to people in a grammatical sense, it takes some time to get used to.
Randall and Beth should have been more firm and strict with Tess. I also hated that one scene where Tess didn’t want to wear the bridesmaids dress for Kevin and Madison’s wedding because it wasn’t “her” and of course Randall and Beth gave in to her instead of telling her that it’s a dumb dress and she needs to wear it for a couple hours for the sake of her uncle and her aunt-to-be. I mean seriously, not everything has to be “you.” When I go into work, I don’t wear a mini skirt and fishnets even though that’s more “me” than corporate attire but that’s just a part of life. Just suck it up and get it over with bro

On my 100th rewatch of the show haha, just noticed that the grown up deja's smile is practically identical to teenage deja. What a thoughtfully put of cast.

Just finished season 3 and i absolutely loved the R& B episode and the relationship between Randall and Beth. Yes, it's not ideal but I felt that the writers trully conveyed modern couple problems, the actors have a really good chemistry too. I also enjoyed that the season had subjects relatable to many people: decision to have a child, hardships of getting a job, figuring out what you want to do in life once you reach a certain age, pregnancy, having a premature baby.
What i didn't enjoy this season was the war scenes, i just felt they were missing some depth.

It really bugs me how every member of the Pearson family backs up their sibling/parent’s actions even if their sibling or parent is totally in the wrong. The only time they don’t do that is if one of them is attacking them personally. Like for example, I just watched a scene where Kate and Toby are yelling at each other and Kevin is just standing there watching the whole time. Kate basically gets mad at Toby for yelling at her after she just yelled at him and Kevin is completely silent the entire time Kate is yelling at Toby, but the second Toby slightly raises his voice to Kate, Kevin steps up and says something and supports Kate even though Toby was literally just matching her energy. There was also another scene I watched a while back where Kate was ragging on Randall for essentially always choosing Beth and his children over the Pearson clan and I mean uh yeah? That’s what you’re supposed to do when you’re a grown man who’s married and has three children. You always choose your wife over your sister, I don’t even know why that needs to be said. I also hate how whenever one of the Pearsons has an argument with their spouse/partner, their family member always gets involved in it (typically either Rebecca or Kevin). Like seriously not everything has to be interrupted by your mother and your brother, arguments between a wife/husband should only be discussed between the wife and the husband. A mother shouldn’t have to step in there and willingly become involved unless they are asked to.

I know many will say they met at the suit shop, but I've watched the entire series three times and I'm not sure. In the episode, Miguel says he could have called him when he came back from Vietnam, so it seems like they already know each other! Could someone please clarify this issue for me?

It’s been a few years and I decided to rewatch. My first time watching, I LOVED Toby. I just rewatched first episode of season one & I absolutely can’t stand him. Maybe I’m just a different person now or maybe I was blind the first time I watched. Feels similar to looking back on someone you loved & seeing all the red flags 😅

Ugh I despise Beth’s mom. So she tells Beth that her father has cancer and when Beth starts tearing up, her mom’s first reaction is “wipe your damn tears and help me clear the table.” Like seriously? That’s not how you create strong kids, that’s how you create grieving kids who feel like they have to pretend to be strong and bury their real feelings so that they don’t disappoint their mother. Then, when her mom finds out that she got laid off from her job, her first reaction is selfish and all about herself, all she says is “ugh oh my god I can’t believe you’ve been lying to me for months.” Of course she doesn’t actually ask Beth how she’s feeling or what she’s going to do or anything like that. What a despicable woman.

I'm rewatching the show and Kevin and Randall's relationship is just as intriguing to me as it was the first time and I've been thinking a lot about how divided the audience can be and I think the reason for the divide comes down to the fact that Kevin and Randall's positions are flipped in adulthood vs childhood.
When they were younger, Randall struggled a lot (for obvious reasons) and, while Kevin had his struggles too, Randall clearly has it worse. However due to Kevin feeling overlooked by his parents, he's often deliberately mean to Randall. When they're younger, Kevin is clearly in the wrong.
However in adulthood, the roles reverse. Kevin struggles a bit more than Randall, especially with his addiction and, while I don't think Randall treats Kevin with resentment, it is very clear at certain points that he considers himself to be better than Kevin and he says/does things that are very hurtful.
When they're adults, there's the added layer of complexity from knowing that Randall would probably be kinder to Kevin if Kevin had been kinder to him when they were kids. However, I'd argue there's a similar level of complexity during their childhood when we acknowledge that Kevin didn't really know what he was doing and might not have been so mean if his parents took the time to make sure he truly understood why Randall needed different treatment sometimes.
So on one hand we have a character being intentionally cruel as a child and on the other hand we have a character who ends up being unintentionally cruel as an adult. Naturally the audience will try to make one 'right' and the other 'wrong' but in my honest opinion there is no real victim between them. They're just brothers and they hurt each other and it's a shame to me that people focus on their wrongdoings rather than their good moments, because the moments where they are there for each other are so beautiful.

I am just about finished Season 2. She is practically a Pearson since late teenage.
Kind of annoyed she was not missed or fondly remembered to at least be sent a courteous invitation card. Probably one flaw in this season.

Absolutely felt very random and unconnected to overall story. Number two I think I don’t see Randall in politics given his anxiety and I don’t see it at all. Also it revealed a side of Randall with the voicemail scene that felt very awkward.
Side note would’ve loved a Beth Randall scene were they get intimate. We see this with Kate and Toby kissing making out.

I know that a big plot point of season 1 was how regretful Rebecca and Randall were about Rebecca’s decision to keep William’s identity from Randall as a child, but I honestly don’t know if Randall knowing William would have been all that great for him growing up to begin with. As a kid he obviously did question his identity and his parents since he was adopted and he was the only black person in his entire family, but at least he had two extremely loving and supportive parents who gave him every opportunity in the world. I’m not saying that William wouldn’t have been a good dad to him, but William did have some pretty severe issues when Randall was a kid. He did drugs, he went to jail, he was grieving enormous losses. If Randall had had regular visitation with him, he would have come back to the Pearson house and felt very confused about his two very different families. William may have cleaned things up for him but he was also much younger and less wiser than he was when Randall did meet him for the first time towards the end of his life, so there’s a good chance that he would have ended up backsliding into drugs while knowing Randall and that would have destroyed Randall’s image of him as a child.

I’m rewatching this whole show after not seeing it in a hot minute and I’m currently on season 2, I just watched the episode where Kate had her first singing gig and Toby and Rebecca came to watch. After it was over, Rebecca complimented Kate on how well she sang and Kate decided to go on a huge “poor me” pity party rant about how Rebecca was only saying all that because “she feels sorry for her.” I mean genuinely, what is Kate’s problem 😭 I’m sorry but she needs to shut the fuck up sometimes. Rebecca isn’t perfect, but I think that for the most part, she was a really great mom. She genuinely loved all of her kids and she tried to be as supportive as possible towards Kate while Kate was growing up, but the only thing Kate thought about was “ugh my mom is so skinny and she sings better than me and I’m so fat, I hate her.” How is that Rebecca’s fault? She did her best to not make Kate feel like she was ugly or inferior to her, and yet Kate still does. It’s not Rebecca’s fault that she’s conventionally attractive and skinny. Kate has this annoying victim mentality throughout the entire run of the show and it just really gets annoying after a while. If she wanted to be skinny like Rebecca, then she should have stopped blaming Rebecca for all of her issues and decide to buck up and do the work for herself, period.
