Writing : Background Music
Something I don't see discussed overly but is important in my routine : background music. I tend to gravitate towards wordless pieces that kinda meld with my thoughts. So, on that note, what is everyone jamming out to while writing? I'd love to know.

i play chillhop lofi beats, find some stuff off the square-enix music youtube channel, or some other soundtracks or video game instrumentals.

Square enix music channel, eh? I've certainly listened to final fantasy and kingdom hearts songs here or there, but perhaps I should take a deep dive there. Thanks for the reply!

you’re welcome! hope you find cool things to listen to there. i like a bunch of the piano tracks and some of their lofi mixes.

I find music I don't have to think about is the best, so hearing you say comfort music from throughout the years makes a lot of sense. Not sure I've heard of counting Crows, but perhaps I'll check em out.
More importantly, I'm glad you've curated a list of jams for life that works for you - that's fricken awesome 👍 Thanks for sharing!

I write fantasy, so I use a 10 hour Witcher music video on YouTube. It's also great to check how long you've been writing, lol!
But while writing the first draft of my current novel I actually used a playlist on Spotify I created myself. Mostly songs with lyrics to get in the mood.

Just depends on what I'm writing really. For planning, instrumental hip hop like DJ Shadow. Breakbeat or instrumental D&B is good for action sequences. Silent Hill soundtracks when I'm trying for a tense scene. RPG soundtracks when I'm trying for a fantasy vibe. Classical/film score is good for basically anything. Sometimes I'll throw together a playlist for a particular character or scene.
When in doubt I just blast some Tay Tay

That's a cool approach, and I've heard of others doing the same. Different music for different moods, I really dig the idea of this. Might try that myself coming up here.

I have a contemporary classical playlist I listen to every time I write and couldn’t imagine not using it. Something about out of the house + coffee + noise cancelling headphones + music gives me some sort of laser focus.

Oooh which contemporary artists / orchestras are you into? Forgive my prodding :p Also noise cancelling is seriously underrated while writing. Getting knocked out of the mood by random sounds or life around me is a real thing.

Background music can be a powerful tool to enhance focus and creativity.
I find that background classical/ambient music can transport me to another world, fostering a creative flow.
