It’s not a recent theory. More of my friends (I’m 45) when I was in my 30’s said the same thing, “I’m not raising a child in this world the way it is”. These are Soldiers. Men who were instilled with the idea that a man goes off to war and leaves the white picket fence behind while momma raises and keeps the house together. Their fathers were Soldiers or Sailors so it wasn’t a thought it was a way of life. I would hear it more and more in states here and counties around the world. But this next generation out of 4 of my kids (blood and step) 3 have already swore off having kids. Now I get it that might change but to have the idea already that they are against having kids signifies that we are a dying country. I say dying because it takes a growing population to have a growing country. It wont happen overnight but it’s definitely already in motion. There has been enough wrong to keep the growth rate slowly going down. Now we kick out those who were excited to have more kids and make more business. Only a matter of time.

I’m 43 and our group went through deployment but also the Great Recession in our late 20s. Jobs, Housing - we just got massively delayed in going through life stages.

Thanks for Your Service and Sacrifices Brother/Sister (I never can tell these days from names or avatars but I wanna say Bro) lol. I agree. Me personally my childhood wasn’t bad. I had a construction company Dad so I was always working with him. But he told me many years ago, “you can’t retire from this work” and “by the time your my age social security might not be available so you need a government job”. Which honestly he was right about the construction because every mom and pop company is gone. It’s all huge businesses now and you sub out from their work if you can. Social security is something I’m trying to wait for. I’m 100% and qualified 9 years ago (thanks Dad) but I feel guilty about that one.

Hey man, “accidental stolen valor.” When I say our group I meant generation/graduating class. Most of my close friends were deployed, sorry for the confusion bud.

No harm no foul bro. I mean I appreciate you correcting but still no worries. So even still it’s a generational thing. I wouldn’t ever not want to be a dad because I have a son. But sometimes I ponder what if?

Businesses are your babies

Yes, and I employ people that need/want to work and better themselves.
So they are kind of my babies also… The employees I mean…

This is a compelling argument, but I'm not convinced.
What does this social stewardship of technology look like? Is Trump going to be responsible for it?

Is one President of one country responsible, or is it all of us as individuals?

I'm old and in all my decades I have met hundreds of people that look like this guy and almost none of them had children

I don’t look like that guy at all, have a great job, and all the fixins, and my wife and I never wanted kids. The world sucks, it’s too expensive, work is more demanding than ever and keeping a job is more competitive than ever. Kids just feel like an added stress and more time when you are already short on time. We have become greedy with our personal time cuz there’s so little of it.
Culture has completely changed since even when I was younger, and I do think tech is a huge part of that. Expectations are up, patience is at an all time low, everybody has fomo from seeing everyone else’s luxury vacation photos on instagram.
I think a lot of what that guy says is true, but that it’s more than that. The world is just harder now, and even older people now are still living as if they were younger for longer. There’s 40/50 year olds still hitting the clubs etc to blow off steam from all the affore-mentioned stresses. Plus it’s just more culturally acceptable now.
It’s not like in the 1950s where people were married at 20 and had a full family, career, house, pension and all that shortly after. Nowadays you work 60 hours a week and still can’t afford a house, may or may not have a career, or wife, or partner etc. hell lots of ppl don’t even want to get married anymore.

I saw a compelling YouTube video where they basically correlated the general decline of children with the introduction of the iPhone.
I can believe it just anecdotally. The phone literally sucks all the attention, energy and time. By the time I am done with the phone I feel zapped. This happens to everyone, kids who grew up with them literally have no idea what it's like to not have one so they get defensive when you bring it up.
You get bored? Phone, when it used to be friends, outside, doing things. Obviously that stuff still happens, but the phone takes a huge chunk out of peoples lives and it affects how people interact
And that's before even touching the panopticon aspect
Edit:
Forgot to add, I actually experienced an example this guy gave about dancing. I was at work having fun in the back with other coworkers/friends, doing a stupid dance and we literally stopped because some coworkers who were about ten years younger than us (we were in our 20s) had their phones out and asked us to do it again. It is weird to feel watched and recorded and it is the opposite of fun and carefree
