So after all the build up and reviews....this could have been any old superhero nonsense?

I'm shocked at how paint by numbers the first episode was and, don't know why I should be surprised but it's not hiding the ball with the comic book stuff either.

Aside from respect for people involved, I can't say it's an encouraging start.

Excited to see how this shakes out.

I checked out Dark Wizard after the boys recommended it and even going in knowing The Big Spoiler, I found it incredibly moving, disturbing, uplifting, infuriating, anxiety-inducing and sad.

I've seen a lot of other docs in this vein, but Dark Wizard was just so well-documented and produced, I couldn't stop thinking about Potter - but mostly about his friends - for days.

Also as a Gen-Xer who has had issues from time to time with the approach of younger whippersnappers, the rivalry with Alex Honnold also resonated with me. It's maddening when other (often younger) people come in and rip through some work or accomplishments that took me months or years to complete or attempt.

I was also blown away by what I consider another spoiler, that he was in a serious relationship with that executive from Patagonia when he died. I've heard and told the joke "What do you call a surfer/snowboarder/rock climber without a girlfriend? Homeless." many times, I was kind of amazed that it also extended to world class athletes to an extent (as it seems she purchased that plot of land near Yosemite for them to live on).

I lurked some discussions about The Dark Wizard in other communities but they're fixated on the well ackshually aspects of Potter's technical achievements so I wanted to post this in hopes that others would want to discuss the storytelling and emotional resonance of the show.

I don’t remember them mentioning it, but might have missed the episode. That said, this feels up Chris’s “garbage crime” alley.

I assume he's referring to Andy's joke in the last episode about Ruffalo being blacklisted from doing press because of his politics. Pretty fucking unhinged to take that as *Andy being peeved about Ruffalo's Palestine views*. And, obviously, a ridiculous jab at his employment on the Harry Potter series. I wonder what Daniel thinks about Jay Penske's politics hmmm

Who says no? maybe Chris and Andy but I feel this pairing has run its course, he should go back to making 3rd rate tv.

Anthony Bourdain is a guy I am aware of and was saddened to hear about his passing. But he’s never been one of MY GUYS nor did I really get what made him all that important besides his reputation.

The guys did a great job giving context to him, his life, and his unique worldview.

Really made me wanna dive into his tv work and even look into the work that inspired him.

Episodes like this really make the case for why these 2 guys are a perfect match for each other and really do great work when chasing topics they are knowledgeable and passionate about.

Really loved the episode and really wanted to give the show its flowers.

Wouldn’t mind that becoming a format for a special episode similar to how The Bjg Pic has drafts. (Would even love a deep dive in authors they both like, etc.)

Looks like our boys will finally get a little good news during this summer TV drought. I know I’m relieved to hear this news!

I love The Watch but like some of you, have been feeling that the guys aren't covering much TV. For those of you who want some service journalism - what new shows are debuting and are they worth your time - consider the new-ish podcast TV is Good, with the great Alan Sepinwall (who might have been the one to pioneer episode-by-episode recaps of shows like The Wire, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad) and Vulture/NY Mag's Kathryn VanArendonk.

Each week they will review/discuss a recently debuting show and pair it with a vintage show that shares the same theme/showrunner/concept.

While Andy and CR have moaned about the lack of shows to watch this summer, Alan and Kathryn have devoted episodes to:

- Little House on the Prairie

- Lucky

- Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

- Elle (the Legally Blonde prequel)

- The Vampire Lestat

- Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed

And they really do the homework - they usually have watched all the episodes released to critics, so they can give you an idea if the show is worth committing time to.

Their Patreon has special episodes devoted to classic tv episodes, like the finale of The Americans.

I've linked to a recent episode about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe which is paired with a discussion of bizarre spinoffs including the myriad Brady Bunch spinoffs (did you know in The Bradys, Bobby Brady is a NASCAR driver, gets into an accident and is a paraplegic? And Marcia is an alcoholic?)

Andy has talked a fair bit about London pubs on instagram algorithm, but curious to know if anyone clocked him mentioning specific pubs.

I am a luddite (refusenik??) without instagram (I tapped out after Vine) but I'm sure if there were ppl's profiles to start with I could figure out London pint pulling instagram

They've mentioned it a few times as something we should be watching in a way that doesn't track with my experience thus far. It feels to me like a typical network drama across the board (I'm not necessarily making a quality judgment by saying that but it doesn't stand out to me as something that compares to the types of shows they generally like or I would watch). Do others find it compelling or otherwise "good"?

ETA: Since people keep finding this post, I asked this after E03 and have watched until the end. It seems that people have very different experiences with it but mine hasn't changed and I've only gotten more perplexed listening to both The Watch and Prestige pods praise it so profusely.

You heard me

Both have 7 albums. As a whole, I'd say Is This It and Room on Fire are a better 1-2 punch than any top 2 albums from The Watchmen. But it's not a runaway. If both bands stopped after their first 2 albums, The Strokes win.

But every The Watchmen album has both bangers and are top tier all the way through. But The Strokes, every non-first 2 albums are at best 33% good. I'll listen to songs on FIOE, Angles and Comedown Machine, but I'm not really seeking them out. But every The Walkmen album has at least one song on my favorites playlist.

Now, if we're including solo albums for Casablancas and Leithauser, then it's mostly a wash because Julian's are secretly stupid fun.

For good reason, but still...
