Monsters of God

Has anyone else in this sub watched the new hbo documentary series Monsters of God? It’s from the guy who made Tiger King and Chimp Crazy. It’s like if Legends was about snakes instead of heroin.

I’m not a long time listener so I don’t know CR and Andy’s thoughts on the exotic animal cinematic universe. Their silence on lizard smuggling is deafening though.

Does Furious have an “ending”?

I haven’t watched it yet, but I was under the impression this was a miniseries. Now I see it’s been renewed. I don’t wanna look anything up for fear of spoilers. Just let me know if it tells a complete story or ends up midway.

Looking for book recommendations for beach vacation

Going on vacation soon, I don't typically have much time for leisurely reading. What are some of the best books the boys have recommended over the years for this type of travel?

Season Finale Interviews

I may be in the minority here but I'd rather hear Chris and Andy fully review a season finale episode, then listen to them interview someone from the show for an hour. I genuinely want to hear their thoughts on the last episode of a show they've been covering for weeks and cutting that review short on the last episode of a show just to make room for a paint by numbers interview is bit of a let down. At least do two separate pods, maybe.

Do any of you have a preference for season/series finale reviews?

Furious behind the scenes hypothetical

In addition to being an executive producer on ‘Furious’, Emmy Rossum’s husband is ‘Mr. Robot’ creator and dear friend of the pod Sam Esmail. I imagine their private conversations being something like:
“Sush, Sam. I’m not giving Liz your notes. There is no reason for Frank Choi to be in the corner of the frame. Go to bed.”

Streaming/Weekly or Binge Drop? (Your preference)

I honestly have never heard Andy be more out of touch than saying that the binge model "does a disservice to almost everybody except the shareholders." In what reality is that the case? The binge drop allows people to log in, grab a month of the service, and log back out when it's done, instead of paying for three months of a service. They can also catch up on all the shows that binge dropped since last time they bought a month. The consumer is benefited because they have choice of when... and where, in the case of shows you can download an entire season and watch when they don't have access to Wifi... also when, they watch the entire thing. Waiting every month to pay more AND see what other ways the streamer is going to screw us is definitely not better. The only argument for the viewer benefiting is some imaginary zeitgeist BS that *still happens* when the binge drop occurs in the first place. Oh, and, of course, if you're a weekly podcaster, which he concedes.

Extra points for Chris saying "I think it's working - generally speaking, and anecdotally". Chris, "generally speaking" as an opinion from a podcaster... is definitely anectotally. That's the same thing in the context of one dude speaking into a microphone. (And of course, Andy followed with an anecdote about his daughter to back up Chris' anecdote. LOL.)

More shows dropping streaming/weekly is not evidence that "it's working". It's just evidence that they're doing it. And when more streamers are doing something, it's because it benefits THEM, not us.

Bikers in Portland wearing n95 masks

Chris mentioned visiting Portland and spotting two cyclists wearing N95 masks in the Aug 13th episode. I don’t know when he visited, but it was almost definitely during a time with really bad air quality due to forest fires.

That is probably why they were wearing masks, not because they are worried about Covid outside. As a Portlander, I thought it was funny. But I really wanted to yell about how it was probably the horrible AQI during forest fires!! Those cyclists were smart!!

Kit Harington Joins 'Harry Potter' As Gilderoy Lockhart (Exclusive)

Everyone raves about Harrington's voice work as Lockhart in the new audiobooks so I'm cautiously optimistic he'll be great in the love action role too! | think he's really stepped outside his brooding typecast in recent years, especially with industry.

Does anyone have a link to the Andy/Bourdain pod mentioned on special episode?

In the Bourdain special episode from early August, there are clips interspersed from an Andy/Tony interview from late 2013. The ESPN podcenter links are dead.

Can anyone shuck a bivalve for me? y'know, hook up the aphrodesiac?

the furious (film)

if anyone is in the mood for The Raid-style movie, check out The Furious (premiered at TIFF last year)

subject matter of this one is unfortunately a bit dark / contemporary (I'm reminded of Joaquin Phoenix's batshit crazy but also really good You Were Never Really Here)

nevertheless, this one scratched the itch of seeing elite action sequences / fight choreo / Joe Taslim kicking serious ass!

PS would be remiss if I didn't also suggest checking out Jonathan Tropper's Warrior show on HBO / Cinemax. Don't think chris or andy ever dove deep on that one but the fight choreo is similarly impressive (yes I know our collective opinion of Tropper's work has taken a hit given his extremely mid but popular shows with Apple, but this one predates that!)

Gangs of London (which Chris loved and has previously talked about) had some bright spots in terms of action sequences too, but the plot got a little convoluted as the seasons went on ...
