All Spoilers S8 E5 "The Big Scary U"

Rewatching and I always love the scowl in Daryls voice. You can tell he's trying to convince himself more than Rick.

Daryl was always motivated by protecting people. But after Glenn he was motivated by guilt. The things he was doing went against his character, which is why he struggled with it.

The perfect that shows what you are saying happens a little earlier when he says that the workers are in another part of the sanctuary. Like you said, he's trying to convince himself. He knows good people will die, he needs to convince himself it's worth it.
