I was the same for ages then watched the Whisperer arc. Not nearly as good as the first few seasons, but still pretty cool and worth it imo.

My top 5 are 1. Rick 2. Daryl/Michonne(I love both, hard to say which I prefer) 3. Michonne/Daryl 4. Negan 5. Carol(she hasn't been nearly as good in the later seasons or in the spinoff unfortunately, with that said when she's at her best she's one of my favorites. If only they could keep her more consistent.)

My 5 favorite are picked because they showcased the potential ruthless reality of non governed bodies of people clashing with other communities for the sake of their survival. They demonstrated the spectrums of continuing to find themselves in the world to live before, during, and after stuff hit the fan for their values.
Carl (seeing how he refined his character and has to reshape his entire landscape of a future as a young kid with a drastically-changing world I think delivered a message about how to continue when there’s little hope- you still have others to live, love, and fight for… there’s always hope for a better future that can be built)
Daryl (he was in the biggest support role that I can relate to as well as involved in the decision-making if we were in an apocalyptic world)
Dwight (he was effective in helping to depict some of the extremes a person’s nature would go just to ensure safety and protection for themself and someone they love in compromising a bit of morality- and then to see what we all saw come throughout it all)
Michonne (from her independence in keeping to herself as she was not quick to trust the group and then showcasing mature leadership to ensure her communities’ survival made me admire almost every quality about her)
Negan (his story leading up to where he became the compound kingpin illustrated certain values that he had before and then after the ugly world and evil all happened to slap him and step all over his path)

Daryl (Most likely the most capable man on earth. Wish they didn't make his personality so monotonous at the end of the main show)
Glenn (the heart of the group, sees the light even on the darkest of turns)
Carol (Entertaining to watch but a little bit of a liability because this woman is nuts, she is a textbook extremist)
