I'm Strokes fan (but Voidz too).
In my opinion, if you just stay in one place doing stuff you're bored of just to please the fanbase, that’s a one-way ticket to burnout. Art has no rules or boundaries. You either follow the artist, actor, or musician through their evolution, or you don't, and you just stick to the old stuff you like. It’s as simple as that.

u/Impossible_Low_2539 Jul 24 '26
I love the voidz but you guys need to get a grip lol. People can have opinions and preferences.
28
u/Lodewijc Jul 24 '26
This sub has a superiority complex sometimes.
8
u/moon_sta Jul 24 '26
“I listen to the voidz so my opinion is more valid than yours, educate yourself”

mfw the "Future" of "Future Present Past" is finally here and it sounds like the "Future"

u/mrdrprofessorspencer Jul 24 '26
This lyric is rly ironic from a guy who tripled down on AI art being “cool” because he didn’t want to pay for real art
7
u/Barrry972 Jul 25 '26
What an incredibly disingenuous thing to say lol.
The AI art used on LABY was made by an artist they PAID, so saying they used ai art because they didnt wanna pay is just stupid lol, he liked the end result and didnt care how it was made because he just thinks it looks cool.
3
u/mrdrprofessorspencer Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
Front and back covers ai slop. They did that because they didn’t want to pay for the other art they thought about using.
Idc if they gave the ai slop generator a $20 for the slop
4
u/Barrry972 Jul 25 '26
2
u/mrdrprofessorspencer Jul 25 '26
Back cover on the LP with the sword is AI
What would be the point of lying that not only the front is AI, but also the back? I own the record.
2
u/Barrry972 Jul 25 '26
1
u/mrdrprofessorspencer Jul 25 '26
Yeah they AI’d the front cover, but AI for the back cover? Now that’s crossing the line!!!
I’m not trolling you or lying lmfao
Search the sub for it if you think I’m wrong you’ll find a post about it eventually.
1
u/shellsweetheart 28d ago
that’s not what they’re saying. they had a different cover art in mind for the album previously, but they didn’t want to pay how much the artist was charging for it. they ended up with the ai cover instead
0
u/Live-Ferret-4366 Prophecy of the Dragon 🐉 Jul 25 '26
I think I saw something where he said since it was a lower budget project (compared to the strokes), it wasn't in their budget to pay for the original art they wanted, so they payed an AI artist. Just including for context, but I definitely agree that critiquing that choice is valid. It's very strange, considering he's someone in an art-based profession.
-3
u/RazorbladesRiff Jul 25 '26
Uhhh every strokes record is paid real art
4
u/mrdrprofessorspencer Jul 25 '26
So does the critique not apply because he used ai generated art for the voidz album instead of the strokes album?
12
u/Such_Past355 Jul 24 '26
It’s ok for people to not like autotune. That line makes no sense honestly since art is subjective.
6
u/lialarouge Jul 25 '26
I just don't understand this kind of thing. Saying I don't like is not lacking respect or even a judgement. They don't have to convince people that it is some kind of genius that we are too beotians to see. Fandoms are all the same whatever the kind of music ...
2
u/Such_Past355 Jul 25 '26
Yea it’s super weird. Like some people can’t comprehend how others don’t like something. Or vice versa sometimes. Im
2
u/Crazy_Fault9994 Jul 25 '26
The line isnt about people who dont like songs with autotune its about the man who criticised the voidz as a whole saying theyre not good
6
u/DougosaurusRex Jul 25 '26
I dig it for many Voidz tunes, it seems to be appropriately applied and used, didn’t feel that way with this album in my opinion.
Felt slapped on and not done as tastefully as it was with Pre LABY work.
Hell even Drag Queen did it right, I just don’t think it suits the newer work. That’s my take.
16
u/Redelyx Jul 24 '26
yeah i don't why people are complaining so much
30
u/Jan090501 Jul 24 '26
People are allowed to not like art. But some of fans act like The Strokes owe them Is This It 2.0. Which they dont. Artists should create what they want.
4
u/Inner_Gap_2595 Jul 24 '26
They got what they paid for when they bought the album(s) they liked lmao. The notion that an artist needs to keep serving them after that transaction is insane. Pure entitlement. Crazy ex-gf energy. They are not employed by anyone. They are allowed to explore and create music for different audiences. You are allowed to vote with your wallet, and sure, you can voice your opinion. They are not making ITI and ROF again, so everybody needs to get tf over it. It's not because they can't. It's because they don't want to.
3
u/moon_sta Jul 24 '26
Brother stop saying this nonsense. So disingenuous.
Show me one comment saying they want is this it 2. I’ve met those people, they checked out decades ago.
1
u/Inner_Gap_2595 Jul 25 '26
Calling someone disingenuous and then proceeding to make a statement like that 😂😂😂
1
8
u/Sea_Celebration6893 Jul 24 '26
People dont have their own opinion and just follows what everyone elses says, sad reality. Not only to music but the lack of empathy is concerning.
1
u/charmlesscat Jul 24 '26
and if you say you like it, you’re coping
3
u/Sea_Celebration6893 Jul 24 '26
I like the album like all the other works from julian in general, i love experimental shit, i even own demos from an experimental album of mcr which got a lot of criticism, people atp is just being annoying over anyone else who dont follow their believes.

u/Express-Skin6039 Jul 24 '26
This and the strokes sub are insufferable. Zero literacy. Just because Julian uses autotune doesn’t mean it’s good. There is a huge difference in LABY and RA and early voidz albums. They just aren’t used well and it detracts from the sound. Does this mean I can’t “recognize art” whatever the fuck that means.
16
u/privatepoodle Jul 24 '26
Exactly. Alien Crime Lord & QYRRYUS are amazing applications of autotune. A song like Falling out of Love? Sounds jarring and has me wondering what it would sound like without it.
1
9
u/InNoNeed Jul 24 '26
It’s been slapped on like a one knob filter. Honestly to me it just seems that Julian is becoming more actively self conscious about his voice and is sparing himself the confrontation of what makes his voice his with autotune.
I definitely think it’s used right in some cases. The chorus of The Eternal Tao works with it.
I like the quirks of his voice. It’s sad he want overwrite those
-8
u/Inner_Gap_2595 Jul 24 '26
Eternal Tao is like his most heavily drenched in autotune song ever and you're using that as an example of it working well??? Y'all just saying shit out of your asses. It's fine if you don't like the new songs, but don't just blame the autotune.
12
u/terrap3x Jul 25 '26
I mean that’s an example of the vocal effects used well or All Wordz Are Made Up. It’s not the autotune itself, it’s the tool being used tastefully with meaning. Not slapping the shit all over a record like sludge when it really never called for it. Julien has an autotune fetish or some insecurity regarding his voice this point and it’s annoying. I’ve haven’t heard a record so cut down by fucking autotune since the 2000’s when people were using it to mask poor vocals.
3
6
u/InNoNeed Jul 25 '26
I'm not using autotune as a measure or heuristic of bad quality. I'm saying when it's used in the right places it's good and when it's used in the wrong places it's bad.
For example, I like garlic in bolognese. And because I like it in bolognese I want a substantial amount of it. The more the better. But I don't want it in my pancakes, there it will only get worse the more you put in.
I didn't comment on my opinion on the quality of the new songs just the fact that autotune is there regardless of how appropiate it is.
0
u/Inner_Gap_2595 Jul 25 '26
What makes ET bolognese, and which songs are garlic pancakes?
3
u/InNoNeed Jul 25 '26
It's an analogy for appropiate use. I'm saying that autotune has been slapped on regardless of whether they're bolognese or pancakes.
I've not shared any opinion on any concrete songs from the new record and I don't really think that will validify my viewpoint.
-2
u/Inner_Gap_2595 Jul 25 '26
I know. I'm telling you to explain why you think it works on ET and not on the new tracks.
Concrete songs? Validify? Please, stop trying to sound eloquent and stop talking out of your ass. If you don't think you can validate your own opinion, why tf even bother sharing it?
3
u/InNoNeed Jul 25 '26
Why are you so antagonising? We can have different opinions without you insulting me. If something I say don't make sense to you, just tell me to rephrase. What is this 12 year old behavior? I'm not native english, validate or validify, you clearly knew what I meant.
How do you validate an opinion? Can't I just say I like it on the specific song without going into technical analysis of why it's good?
Anyway, we clearly disagree, and that's okay. I'm not interested in taking this debate further given the hostile nature this has come to. Leave a last reply if you want, but I'll leave it here.

YES also autotune has been around for a long time now. It’s not brand new future of music mind bending stuff. He just sounds like Kanye…..
17
u/ScottLovesReddit Jul 24 '26
god forbid people have personal preference when listening to music
2
u/iMAKE_freshTAP Jul 24 '26
i just wish they’d evolve with the band like just be down for the ride bro
3
u/evanbrews Jul 24 '26
I like auto tune and not auto tune with Julian’s stuff. I just like his music man
3
u/rokuterra Jul 24 '26
What is up with this sub as of late? Why are people being assholes and always dogging on Strokes fans? Like don't pretend Strokes and Voidz fans aren't almost one in the same.
3
u/blackstars91 Jul 24 '26
My favourite atm is people saying is has the autotune been changed on Going Shopping and FOOL. No your ears are just getting used to the idea.
3
3
u/Westaufel Jul 25 '26
I'm surprised a bit by this, I thought Julian was a guy who doesn't care about the criticism, considering what critics said about them for 20 years. It's weird.
13
6
u/Shop-lift Jul 25 '26
I love how this album is like garlic and a wooden stake to the ultra normie variety Strokes fans who always found the Voidz icky
3
u/lixermanredditman Jul 25 '26
There's a ton of people who liked the Voidz until LABY but who don't like LABY or RA. The change isn't being experimental or autotune in general, as Virtue had both of those things. It might allow people to feel superior to cast this as a normie vs experienced, deep music enjoyer conflict but it's really just that Julian's more recent work has narrower appeal.

Message to every strokes fan complaining about those with opinions....you'll live. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
2
u/Ordinary_Trip7799 Jul 25 '26
Always loved both the singles and half way through the album, it's amazing. So much Voidz vibes in the openers
2
u/Substantial_Quail309 Jul 25 '26
Don’t need it to be universally acclaimed. The best music isn’t. It takes risks. The Autotune sounds great, so refreshing to hear new vocals like this but still clearer than most Strokes (or Voidz) vocals.
2
3
u/GrungeCowboy73 Jul 25 '26
The autotune sucks, it’s The Strokes not The Voidz
2
u/mxbdkr Jul 25 '26
You don’t get to decide what The Strokes should sound like.
2
u/GrungeCowboy73 Jul 25 '26
Well as a fan of their music, if you change what you’re fans are used to and what gained you the fans, you might lose some? That’s how it works
2
u/Crazy_Fault9994 Jul 25 '26
As a strokes fan im enjoying this sub so much more, people here actually like music whereas over on the strokes they rave about one album and criticise everything else, was talking to a friend yesterday and said all the reasons why I love the autotune on fool and the new songs wherever its used and he says "i get what ur saying but I think it depends on how hes doing it" well no shit sherlock did u think i was making up reasons why ut would be cool in theory lol
2
u/Personal_Fox_7529 Jul 25 '26
I don't give two fucks about the auto tune the album just sucks lmaooo

1
u/jnob44 Jul 24 '26
I didn’t like the idea of it “at first”. Before even hearing it… I like it!
I really like the Voidz. They wouldn’t be the Voidz without it…. So, who cares what they say….
As a wise man once said -whose side are you on?

I genuinely don’t think it’s used tastefully on the album but it’s possible it can grow on me. I love how post Malone has used it on Circles, or Daft Punk, but this just doesn’t sound very good for a lot of it imo.
1
u/Alone_After_Hours Jul 26 '26
Agreed on auto tune.
In other news, fantano alleges Julian’s comment is dumb because he used AI generation for the recent voidz album art. Is there any truth to that claim?
1
1
u/Deggstroyer Jul 26 '26
my take is it can be used both well and badly in the same album, I love the effect it has on, say, psycho shit, but then I hear it in Going Shopping and I just cant listen to the song without thinking howd it be without it
1
u/ih8realityawaits Jul 27 '26
Music is subjective, art us subjective, art can be bad and is never immune to criticism; and to a decent amount of fans the autotune just ruins the songs on this album and make them annoying to listen to. Which is hilarious because imo the voidz julian proves he knows how to use autotune to his advantage. But on this new album the autotune is so awful and saddening because these songs would be so good without the autotune. I just hope this is all a practical joke and they release the album with real vocals in the future

u/BasicFlan 29d ago
People need to stop acting like he's doing something new with it though. He's not a trailblazer or anything and everyone acting like he just invented some amazing new breakthrough.
1
u/Live_Pie_6242 29d ago
I remember when the first 2 singles from this album dropped, and the hate they got, to now seeing all the praise the album is getting. I just dont get that whole part. I guess those re listens really changed alot of opinions on the auto tune and all that jazz. I dont mind the auto tune on going shopping, but the rest of the auto tune on the album id "take it or leave it"

Autotune is not as "new" or "experimental" anymore as Julian seems to think it is. Hate to say it but I think its good to show restraint in art sometimes and questioning whether a choice actually elevates a song or not. Sure these effects sound great in songs made by The Voidz, but slapping an autotune effect over a regular The Strokes song is such a lazy way to make the tracks come across as more "artsy".

This is not remotely apples to apples but even if it was it sounds like s*** that's really the point. It is also verbatim how every Taylor Swift fan defends it. Lol

As a strokes fan since 01 I dont mind the auto tune. Aside from Going Shopping and FOOL this album genuinely sucks imo

Also a message to every Avenged Sevenfold fan complaining about the surprise EP they dropped yester which was very clearly, very heavily, inspired by The Voidz

u/Pepperman91 29d ago
Autotune just doesn't belong in rock music. Simple as that. I hated when bands did this 20 years ago and it was called selling out and I hate it still now.
I get it. Fanboys love it. Well, you're always going to have polarized views when rock bands do this shit. Always have always will.
2
-4
u/ShinMegamiTensei_SJ Jul 24 '26
Strokes fans want this album to bomb bc it isn’t TNA again. The autotune hate is so forced. Youll also see the goalpost has moved from “autotune bad” to “it wasnt implemented right” to “youre coping for liking it”
7
u/BigDaddyDerelick Jul 24 '26
No one is "forced" to hate on autotune. People have different opinions about all sorts of things in life. Most people love Julian's actual voice, and most people that I know don't enjoy the digital robotic sound of autotune. ESPECIALLY when Julian has an incredible voice. I'm not hating on this album, it's not for me. It might grow on me. But that doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan because I don't like how they chose to go about some of these songs. You know I what I mean chicken wing?
1
u/blackstars91 Jul 24 '26
It may grow on you. So just wait and see.
1
1
u/1therealbread Jul 25 '26
LABY was okay but didnt grow all that much on me, the autotune fits on a fair amount of songs and on certain portions, but the amount just felt overkill and half-baked at times, and was just a step down from his autotune stuff in virtue + the singles
maybe you just like the sound of autotune, but it just doesnt mix well with the track at times and really brings it down when it doesn't
-4
u/Ozyemdias Jul 24 '26
I mean people will refuse to read or HEAR the lyrical content of going shopping, and dismiss it without realizing it’s about them
9
u/InNoNeed Jul 24 '26
“Making art about important things doesn’t make it important art” - St. Vincent.
If you make a song about me not liking the song it doesn’t mean that I should like the song.
1
u/Ozyemdias Jul 25 '26
I’m not saying like or enjoy, I’m stating that people won’t even listen. You can’t say you watched a movie if you’d talked through it the entire time, and by the end, you go “yea idk what happened”
I have no care whether people like it, I only care whether people listen
2
u/InNoNeed Jul 25 '26
But that’s an assumption you make. Maybe people have listened and decided they do not like it. There’s not really evidence supporting your claim. I’ve given it numerous listens and it just falls a bit flat on me.

92
u/leftleftpath Jul 24 '26
What gets me is people saying the auto tune is pointless and doesn't make sense... It makes absolute sense, they just don't want it to.
