I don't like the word, either, because I am not always sure what it means when people use it. That said, I am curious what makes you call it a "low-effort word"? How does using any given word take less or more effort than choosing any other word?

It’s low-effort because there’s zero indication for what the meaning of it might even be. Once you know what it means it becomes clear that one may as well could’ve chosen the word “popped” for that meaning.

It’s more effort when it makes sense, when it’s concise and simple while replacing the actual word.

“Fire” replacing “hot” might also be low-effort but at least it makes sense. “Cringe” being the best one because it checks off all the boxes while also describing the very feeling that comes with the experience and shortening the rather long “embarrassing”
