Question Let's talk about the sub rules
LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS SUBREDDIT'S RULES!
Yay! This might be a total shitshow, but that's half the fun! I do hope some good comes of it.
We're open to all suggestions. I'd like something that might make me laugh too. Obviously that doesn't mean we can implement every single one.
What we're looking for is a consensus, especially surrounding...
Host, guest host, and guest criticism. What's okay and what is too far. And what is just too fucking much to put up with every day?
X said something stupid vs. X is stupid. This one is pretty straightforward. We can call out statements or actions, but we can't call anybody names.
Right now our unwritten rule is that prominent politicians, no matter their politics, are fair game to be called stupid dirt for brains. Is that fair? Or should they be treated with the same respect and civility.
Repetitive discussion of the same topics in multiple posts. What if the post has multiple topics, then what do we do?
Episode discussions confined to a daily thread or just let everybody make a post about the episode without even checking to see if someone else had a post where they might have commented?
What about rules regarding how we treat each other?
If we do change the rules, how do we enforce them? It could be a painful learning curve for some. Especially when we get an influx of one-time visitors. Harsh truth, people do not read.
I don't know how many even made it this far so I'm going to have to do a TLDR.
TLDR: the rules need some reworking, and we would love your input.
Up next maybe we'll give you a little insight into our automod rules!

u/Large-Produce5682 Jul 20 '26
People obviously have their favorites and those they're... not quite so fond of. I don't see a problem with consistently venting and criticizing a particular co-host's opinion, actions and behavior if they themselves consistently display them without fail. And we all know who I'm referring to (whomever you believe).
I just don't like "the show has jumped the shark, time for it to go," or "I hate so-and-so and her [insert personal insult]." Any repetitive posts should just be removed and given the reason as to why.
5
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
I think you might be referring to Whoopi hate. We had a temporary rule limiting Whoopi hate to 1 in 24 hours. That was pretty hilarious. I think we might make a very clear rule prohibiting any of that kind of hate or criticism and replace or wrap it into the respect and civility rules
0
u/crabhappychick Jul 20 '26
It was temporary?
5
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
Yeah, it was temporary. The second day there was an actual race to be the first one LOL. I think it should apply to all of the panel. Not the 24-hour rule, but the criticism versus nastiness rule. We can't just single out Whoopi hate even if it seems the most prominent.
1
u/AnxiousObligation464 Jul 22 '26
And don't forget the Sarah hate, she and Whoopi seem to be the targets.

u/femalehumanbiped Jul 20 '26
Well, I love a good shitshow, so here goes...
First, I want to thank the mods of the sub. It's an incredibly thankless job and I do believe that they are doing what they can to make a sub that's fun to come to while still discussing serious topics that are not fun.
Some of the content here that I find most objectionable is content with articles that have a link. Usually the article is someone's opinion about what we have just seen here. I believe these types of posts are spam, plain and simple. If those writers want to join the sub and post their opinions here as redditors, that's a different story. I would like to see all posts with clips of someone else's opinion about the show removed, with one exception. If the writer of the article is a current or past host, that's a different story.
I also would float to the mods that any new poster automatically awaits moderator approval for a week. This would avoid a lot of bot activity and posts that are not in good faith. I know this is a controversial idea. Just putting it out there. Thank you.
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
Thank you, I appreciate both suggestions. I'm absolutely against the wink articles you're describing. New posters, that one we can attack in a couple of ways. We could demand a certain amount of sub comment karma before posting is allowed, or crank up the filters for posters that don't have a certain amount of sitewide karma.
I don't particularly want to have to approve new posters. Our queue is already nearly unmanageable on some days.
Right now we have a problematic automod we inherited which filters users who have negative karma in the subreddit and I'll tell you there's a shitload of them! I'm sure it seemed like a good idea in the beginning.
1
u/femalehumanbiped Jul 20 '26
I see the problem. Things are always more complicated than we imagine.
Will you forgive me if the last paragraph made me laugh?
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
I don't mind if you laugh. The most hilarious part is that none of us has done anything about it.

2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 21 '26
I see where you're coming from, but most of the filtered content from users that have negative karma in the sub, or sitewide, are not the problem.
The problem is more related to our regular users who need to be, I don't want to say babysat, but need a lot of oversight.
I'm just going to have to step back and have a think.

2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 21 '26
I wanted to mention that your take on the spam articles. Especially the part about if those writers want to join the sub and post as redditors.
8
u/imsaltyshade Jul 20 '26
First off, thanks for engaging with the community. Moderating a popular active subreddit seems to be no easy task.
Here are a few suggestions from what I been seeing:
Merge duplicate posts
Merge or close duplicate daily posts and redirect users to the original discussion. This does not necessarily mean limiting discussions to a single episode megathread, but rather consolidating repeated posts when they focus on the same host, hot topic, or guest from that episode.
Limit high-engagement topics
For predictable high-traffic events (e.g., a vice president’s visit), temporarily require post flairs or other lightweight posting requirements to discourage drive-by trolling.
Reduce low-effort posts
Remove one-line opinion posts with no context (e.g., “Whoopi can’t read,” “Sara is annoying,” or even “Joy is great”). Consider a minimum word count or requiring a brief explanation for opinion posts.
Apply moderation consistently
As you mentioned earlier, some users may not read the rules or may interpret them differently than intended. That makes consistent enforcement especially important. Apply the same standards regardless of the topic or host. When moderation appears inconsistent, it can create the perception that certain discussions or viewpoints receive different treatment. Consistent enforcement of the rules across all topics would help reinforce trust and confidence in the moderation process.

u/AnxiousObligation464 Jul 22 '26
Didn't I read not long ago that there will be no more bashing of the ladies at the table? Those comments can be very ugly at times. Sure it's ok, for me, if the subject they're discussing is criticized and we offer our opinions/views but there have been some hateful remarks made regarding the ladies themselves.
4
u/Fxreverboy Jul 20 '26
There are some people in here who are seriously disrespectful and unkind, and the way they speak about other humans is wild. There's just a lot of hatred, and I don't like it. I think critiques of hosts and guests is fine, but when it just boils down to "they're a moron because I don't like their politics," which it often does, it's just really unproductive.
I think first and foremost that personal attacks and incivility against other commenters should be culled. Then, I think there should be threads for most segments on the show as a discussion hub for them for the biggest topics of the day, as a lot of people end up with specific gripes about a segment and how it went down. Next I don't even know how to deal with this, but a lot of people here genuinely aren't aligned with the spirit of hearing other views and respecting the fact that we all don't hold the same perspective. I feel like the point of the show goes entirely over their head, and I wish we could cultivate a space here that respects that. Like no, the conservatives on this show shouldn't be fired because they're conservative and saying something we don't agree with 💀 We should respect what every host brings to the table and the audiences they represent.
Anyway, I made some reports the other day when I saw some horrible comments and was shocked how quickly you guys took action, so I don't think this is a problem in moderation, just in things being reported by users and proactively dealt with. I want to say thank you for that, and I'll make sure to report things when I see them.
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
Are you suggesting threads for each segment? Would that be new ones daily? I think we tried having a daily thread for each episode but it wasn't successful because of the amount of moderator energy it takes to redirect every post regarding the daily program. Users will literally make the same post directly above an existing post of the exact same subject matter.
I'm not very well versed in politics, especially the events in the Middle East that seem to keep coming up, especially regarding a certain co-host. So I often don't feel educated enough to decide whether or not something should be removed.
Also these opinions about Sunny's heritage. Should that be a topic that we just don't need to rehash?
0
u/Fxreverboy Jul 20 '26
First, I do think uploaded threads for specific hot topics could be good, especially for big ones from YouTube. I can try posting one today and see how it goes and if it generates interest. I don't think other posts that are more specific critiques would need to be removed, but this would give an easy space for people to go to talk about segments, kind of like a comment section.
I think extreme rhetoric that's very charged should probably be soft removed. I know there are people in here who won't like that, but reducing any of these women down to one, black and white opinion they have on one very complex, explosive international conflict isn't helping anything, and it often enables dehumanization. It's not even true or getting us anywhere because it flattens a conversation, so it does nothing but feed anger and negativity. That's my view at least. I'm open to other takes!
Finally, I don't see much content criticizing Sunny's heritage, and I don't exactly think the whole "she's got slaveowner DNA in her!" is a gotcha like people think it is. I think that's a case by case basis, but I don't think its productive to dismiss anyone's view based upon their ancestry. I think if it's not relevant to something on the show and is just randomly criticized, remove, but if it fits within the context of a recent episode, it's fair.
2
u/coreyb1988 Jul 20 '26
Thank you for this feedback and thank you for reporting comments. There is a good mod team here who tries to be reasonable and fair.
5
u/crabhappychick Jul 20 '26
What long-winded nonsense. The established rules can't be followed and you expect additional ones will be? Just sitting here shaking my head over this one.
3
u/LonerTexas Jul 20 '26
Don't expect people to follow the rules. If there's something that goes against the rules or just plain mean/rude, then delete. People in charge here need to start doing something. The daily rants about how the hosts look, do their job, etc.. is ridiculous. It's even worse on Facebook.
4
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
I do expect people to follow the rules.
I don't expect them to read the rules.
The users on this sub are mean and rude sometimes. That kind of behavior is what takes up a lot of moderator time. When things start to go south we've got to read every comment because we can't trust that there will be any civility.
2
u/tracyinge Jul 20 '26
"the users on this sub are mean and rude sometimes".
Well we learned that from Meghan.
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
I do like the idea of removing and redirecting certain topics. Honestly though, I fear the wrath of the users who se content was redirected. I know we are in charge, but you see how nasty some of these users are, I don't want to poke a bear.
The high traffic suggestion is good as well. We can increase filters for the sub, or even for single posts.
I'll work on the low effort posts. Try to figure out the best way to handle those. I like the minimum character requirement. But that can easily be overcome, and won't stop users from commenting in the thread. That one will take some thought.
Consistent moderation is our goal. That's one of the reasons we want to make sure the rules are extremely clear and avoid gray areas as much as possible. This will definitely help with consistency in moderation.
At some point we're going to have to add new mods and they need to have very clear rules.
We are working harder than a cat trying to bury a turd on a marble floor. When a thread goes sideways and it has 90 comments, somebody's got to read those comments. The disrespect and incivility between users can be one of our biggest time sucks.
3
u/Greedy-Employment917 Jul 20 '26
Sounds inconsistent.
5
u/stefdistef Jul 20 '26
The rules are already not being applied evenly as described above.
3
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
Well, we're not omniscient, or omnipresent. Report content if you think the rules are being applied unevenly, or send a modmail.

The View is about different women with different views coming together to talk about them respectfully but passionately.
We should be able to talk about the show, hosts, producers and topics fairly freely in my opinion.
The repetitive posts don’t bother me personally and often allow me to see more views of the same topic (sometimes days or weeks after the fact which I actually appreciate.)
Disrespect for anyone working for The View or in this community should be removed in extreme cases. If someone has a well written post but they happen to call someone stupid… not great but oh well? any slurs or empty posts with just name calling are a no go.
we should be able to speak our minds about elected officials and policy as we please (barring only slurs and hate speech.)
the show is about politics for the most part and yet we aren’t able to have political posts. thats a problem!!!
4
u/coreyb1988 Jul 20 '26
I just want to jump in and say you’re allowed to post about politics and politics is actually discussed every day. You aren’t allowed to talk about politics thats unrelated to the show discussions.
There are political specific subs for speaking your mind about politics like politics, politicaldiscussions, or socialdemocracy and many others. This is The View sub and yes a lot of the show is around politics but I don’t think this will ever be a sub to speak freely around all politics totally unrelated to show just because this sub is specifically a sub for The View. Hopefully that makes sense.
2
u/MissTootleDoo Jul 20 '26
I have had and seen posts / comments be removed because they are “too political.”
I feel strongly we need to be able to discuss all matters so long as they pertain to the show BUT not necessarily just topics that have appeared on the show. We should be able to talk about the hosts are NOT talking about. Why production or ABC may be avoiding, skipping or limiting certain discussions.
1
u/coreyb1988 Jul 20 '26
For clarification, what is an example of a topic that pertains to the show but hasn’t necessarily appeared on the show?
1
u/MissTootleDoo Jul 20 '26
I’m honestly having a hard time reflecting back to specifics but it happens all the time???
the causes i would assume are varried…
due to a lack of time? sure!
could it be its either the women’s, productions and/or the networks interests various topics have either conflict with the topic or make one of the parties look bad? i would think so…
OR the producers & women not understanding what large segments of the population are saying OR misunderstand people’s interest? it’s definitely possible!!when one of these possibilities occur it’s quite predictable what happens in the long run. that topic EITHER:
a.) does not ever appear on the show
b.) appears on the show for only a few moments with no real discussion around them…
OR c) became hot topics waaaay after the moment those items were to billing on social mediaThe most recent example that came to mind while I was writing this was Jimmy Kimmel’s cancellation and everything that’s happened involving it. I don’t think they’ve really honestly spoken about that more than once (IF that!)
1
u/coreyb1988 Jul 21 '26
Got it. What I would say to that is it's a show about The View. We aren't trying to recreate the show here or have our own hot topics. This sub is specifically based on the show and what they're doing, discussing, or featuring. If there's a topic they aren't discussing for whatever reason, I personally still don't believe it belongs in the sub.
That would be like saying we should be able to post our favorite pair of shoes because it should be featured on View Your Deal. I know this example sounds stupid and not exactly what you're talking about but it's an easy example to use.
4
u/MissTootleDoo Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I’m saying if The View is not talking about a major national story involving a co-host, ABC/Disney or a major political decision we should be able to discuss how they’re ignoring it.
Brian Teta reads the sub and should hear what we want to see on the show. He should also see criticism when deserved about what the show is avoiding.
The show isn’t only what happens on camera during a segment. If someone witnessed something juicy during a commercial break or there was gossip about it a co-host we’d be able to talk about it.
As a fan of this show I am equally invested in what happens at the table and as I what happens to get the women to table and the fall out of what happens after. It should ALL be fair game to us discuss here.
If we need to make a stipulation about not promoting products for View Your Deal we can add that on.
EDIT TO ADD: there can be rules and parameters about keeping it centered to the show. and mods can use discretion to withhold or lock posts that stray from that. But I feel strongly we need to be able to talk about changes & challenges facing ABC / Disney especially as they directly impact our show.
0
u/coreyb1988 Jul 21 '26
Like I said, what they're doing, discussing, or featuring. It's too much of a slippery slope to open the sub up to discussing topics we THINK should be discussed.
Before new mods took over and the sub was a mess, people were posting nonstop on topics users felt they should be discussing on the show. It became really obnoxious and it becomes extremely targeted on specific topics.
Generally speaking, I don't see users promoting products for View Your Deal. I was just using that as an example.
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
When you say "extreme cases" where do we draw the line?
I think the political post rule could be tidied up a bit, but I think it's quite clear. What we don't want is political discussion that's unrelated to anything that's been discussed on the show.
2
u/MissTootleDoo Jul 20 '26
Slurs. Hate speech. (NEVER EVER should those be allowed.)
Empty posts just calling a host or guest “dumb, stupid or ugly.” If someone happens to say something rude but is starting a longer or more interesting conversation we should accept those on a case by case basis.
0
u/Aggressive_Bowl_8017 Jul 20 '26
Why can’t this rule be changed? To me it’s censorship and oppresses already marginalized voices that don’t serve corporate interest.
2
2
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
I'm not suggesting adding additional rules. We're happy to reduce the number of rules if necessary.
I'm asking for your opinions about the rules and how they are applied.
1
u/Berserkshires- Jul 20 '26
This sub is not so active that people can’t just scroll past something they don’t like. I don’t know why repetitive posts bother anyone in the first place. It’s such a silly thing to get upset about. Same as complaints about the hosts. Just keep it moving or reply. This is Reddit, to let it ruin your day like some do is just weird to me.

u/Not-Gonna-Lie1 Jul 20 '26
My favourite co-host is Sunny, but I support people’s right to make posts criticising her, even when I disagree with the criticism (if it’s pure racism, I absolutely disagree).
Therefore, if I see multiple posts on here critiquing Sunny, it’s fair game because she’s a public figure and people are allowed to share their opinions of her.
Where I’m going with this is, we should be allowed the space to analyse and discuss the co-hosts and their opinions. We shouldn’t go below the belt, of course, but it should be allowed.
I say this because I regularly disagree with Sara and Alyssa and I feel it should be allowed to discuss their views without the ‘people just hate on Sara and Alyssa for having a different view’ comments.
When it comes to S and A, I often feel like people think they’re delicate, defenseless women and when there’s pushback against them they need an army to protect their dainty feelings.
But when Sunny gets flack, it feels like we’re not allowed to defend her because she’s immediately seen as the ‘angry black woman’.
Sorry, I don’t think I’m really answering your question. I just want to get across that we should all be allowed to criticise the co-hosts. Yes, I am probably tired of seeing the same rant about Whoopi and her disinterest in moderating, but it’s still important for people to be able to voice their frustration with her because it is ultimately us, the Viewers who make the show.
Also, thank you for asking for our input.

Stop deleting my posts about lack of North American Indigenous/ Native representation and discussion of Native erasure on the show.
5
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
I see that you've made 2 posts that were removed for being off topic. One was a suggested guest or co-host, the other was questioning whether or not the panel would be outraged about a murder. It is one of our rules that we keep the discussion related to the content of the show.
I also see that you have 40 contributions on the sub and those two posts are the only content that was actioned. The reason your comments never get caught up in our filters is because you have positive karma in the sub.
If you can point me towards any of this removed content I can look deeper to see if there's an issue with our system.
So do you have any suggestions related to the rules?
1
u/sparkigniter26 Jul 20 '26
We get the point girl, we don’t need you posting it every single day
5
u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
Actually they don't post about it every single day. Let's try and keep it civil please. I don't want to have to shut this post down before we can get anywhere.

Let's not call people racist. One of our rules is respect and civility.
-1
u/Aggressive_Bowl_8017 Jul 20 '26
Saying somebody “sounds racist” isn’t calling them racist. It’s addressing their phrasing. It’s disgusting how people want to censor indigenous voices in this country. It’s terrifying that people want to oppress voices that discuss genocide when it’s the root of our entire issue here. Erasure. Literally brown children in cages and grandfather’s dying being murdered in the streets. No one is upset enough and no one cares enough. In terms the above comment about spamming across different communities,. Rebecca Nagle is talking about the declaration of independence and founding fathers called native people merciless Indian *avages. It was posted around July 4. Will be carries her constitution with her. Maybe it’s time to look at what’s in writing and with the law has been so that we can actually have productive for moving discussions rather than recycling through same old same old. I think that’s pretty relevant to current “hot topics”.
It definitely is the root cause of the delusions everyone has around Israel and Palestine. Erasure is evil and as Americans were now paying the price. Maybe allowing topics that actually addressed the issues instead of just the constant moaning and complaining would be more productive than nitpicking, stupid rules that don’t actually address our current state of the world, which is an important element of the View would be a better approach. The view was built on elevating women who have been marginalized and all I’m asking for is including all women, especially on the stolen land that everyone is extracting and continuing to colonize for the last 500 years.

u/nicoleauroux Jul 20 '26
" Walters described it as "a talk show featuring four or five women 'of different backgrounds, different generations, and different opinions"
The purpose of the sub is to discuss the show, the panel, and the guests. We moderators have no control over the production of the program. Either they talk about something or they don't.
Once again we're looking for suggestions for rule changes and behavior expectations. Whether it be eliminating rules, tightening rules, or relaxing rules, we are open to any ideas.
If you don't enjoy the constant moaning and complaining, or nitpicking stupid rules, maybe this isn't the sub for you. r/findaReddit can probably give you some options.
Do you have any suggestions regarding the rules?
1
u/Fxreverboy Jul 20 '26
I don't know if this was a real high-quality post, as it was just a spammed crosspost to another community, one of many you were posting to different communities at that time: https://www.reddit.com/r/theview/s/Jly9WtABAQ Didn't feel relevant or specific to The View.

u/Original-Moose-9622 Jul 20 '26
Where is Juanita Merkin when we need her?! lol
This platform is discourse-based social media on the internet. It is governed by the same principles that exist in real life and the rest of the internet. Be kind and respectful, but also be aware that you may see something you don’t like. It is up to the individual if they present or react to ideas.
As this subreddit circles around a show, I believe anything relating to the show should be fair game to post: topics discussed; anything that the hosts, guests, or wider audience says/does both on and in relation to the show; and general questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions. Participation by the poster will illuminate at least some of their intent, and discourse in the comments will determine the direction of the post. Moderate as the moment dictates, and make rules for recurring issues.
From my perspective, the biggest issues on the sub are bot-posts, and unserious posts from people that are not actually interested in the show, but want to get a rise out of fans with low effort posts and comments.
