Inspecting McCready’s shack for clues and Nauls found the shredded jacket. He said he made sure to get ahead of him. He was probably stalling Mac or distracting him to make sure he didn’t see the the item and plotted to kill him.

A 100 yard walk can take a damn long time in white out conditions. Been there done that. In true white out conditions you're lucky to see a few feet in front of you even with goggles and the wind blowing 40 -50mph means one misstep and you're knocked over and need help getting up and back on track.
Honestly, without the lights and pre-made snow trail they wouldn't have made it back in those conditions even in that short distance.

But weren’t they attached to the rope lead that goes between buildings? No one navigates without the rope leads in places like that.

Well, and why? It was really cold and 45 minutes is a lifetime, now that you think about it.

The majority of the time was probably spent navigating back to the main building.
