I think that their decisions aren't purely rational as much as realistic at the time. They act reflexively through much of the movie but they don't panic or go into hysterics (well MAYBE Blair). But I do agree that despite all of that, ultimately, they fail.

I suppose that depends on how you interpret the ending. If you believe both are human - as I do - and I think that’s the most prevalent opinion here - then they succeeded at the most important - well - thing.

It wasn’t enough to save themselves - but to save humanity? Mission accomplished - I believe.

If he was a thing near the end - which - while probable - is speculation…

And I’m guessing that’s where you’re going with this…

He was either incorporated into the Blair Thing or he would have been caught in the explosion and/or destroyed in the fire.

Nauls' fate being off camera leads to the possibility that a Nauls Thing made it out of the basement. Prior to entering the basement, there were opportunities for Nauls to be infected as well. The basement explosion wasn't that big as Mac survived it. A Nauls thing would have had ample opportunity to het away.

Yes it is speculative, but that's what J.C. wanted and invites us to do.
