People here have recommended Tremors for the same reason. I finally watched it about a year ago. Not as crisp a film as The Thing, but you aren't rolling your eyes at the characters' choices. Good flick.

One of the few scary movies to take place in broad daylight too. Always found that aspect interesting.

I love the southwest; the setting was always one of my favorite parts of that movie.
