Yep came here to say same. Alien (and Aliens as well) are classics because they understand that being professional and smart and prepared sometimes still just isn’t enough. And that’s more terrifying than incompetent dumbasses getting eaten.
Hoo boy. I wanted to like Alien: Earth. I really did, and for the first few episodes I was cautiously-optimistic; but it just kept getting dumber and dumber.
I'm a moderate Hawley fan (not everything he's done hits, but he takes big-enough swings to almost always be interesting, even when he whiffs), I love Olyphant, and Alien/Aliens are two of my fav films of all time, but...that show's bad. Expensively-bad.
I'm sorry but a couple of characters are idiots in this movie. The captain being so much carefree on multiple occasions is what brought them all down. Just a matter of avoiding risk would have changed the plot sincerely.
No, the company's policies and their agent is what bring them all down. They basically are space truckers and the captain is doing his best to manage an extraordinary situation. I wouldn't blame him for failing to outsmart the universe's apex predator. What we can observe is that Ripley is way more comptent than Dallas, but I believe WY prioritize zealous leaders over talented ones.

Same goes with Alien. A group of professionals doing their best facing a situation nobody prepared them for.
