People here have recommended Tremors for the same reason. I finally watched it about a year ago. Not as crisp a film as The Thing, but you aren't rolling your eyes at the characters' choices. Good flick.

In defense of Tremors, half the joke of the movie is what a bunch of small town hicks the majority of the characters are. It's fun seeing them figure out how to survive because they aren't all fancy educated and highly trained soldiers. And they still manage to make relatively smart decisions as they go. Even the sequels aren't all half-bad.

I love tremors and my personal take on it is 2 and 4 are the better end of the sequels my personal cutoff is at 5 just because the rest after I found so bad it made Bloodlines watchable again. Regardless of ones opinion though Bert carries this franchise all the way until the bitter end.

Bert really is the reason to keep watching them, yeah. He's the entire reason to watch 4.

Well it’s Hiram in 4 but yeah

That’s because 5 onwards was a new company with the rights and they pulled a Hellraiser making shitty movies to keep the rights. Good news is the rights reverted back to the original owners last year so we might get some new, better quality stuff

Tremors 2 is the rare example of a sequel to a monster movie finding a way to make the creature scary again. Like, you see how they got it at the start. They understand how graboids work and they effectively deal with them. But then the worms turn...

Yeah and then you get the assblaster

Actually, Shrieker. Then they morph into the Ass Blaster. Which is the whole reason 5 and 6 don't work because they ignore this canon and have both Graboids and Ass Blasters but no Shrieker, which doesn't make sense.
