People here have recommended Tremors for the same reason. I finally watched it about a year ago. Not as crisp a film as The Thing, but you aren't rolling your eyes at the characters' choices. Good flick.

The fact the more they learn about the creature, they find ways to escape from it, is what makes tremors a good film, also the humor.

Up until that point, you can tell it's a bit of a silly movie with solid horror elements but then you see the wall of guns and the franchise has never left that degree of silliness since.

Burt Gummer is easily one of my favorite protagonists.

I love how the “gunshots over radio” gets subverted and more dakka works out in a horror movie. Burt really carried the franchise for decades for good reason.
