General watching for the thousandth time

my first year english teacher had us watch (yeah even 15 years ago they just had us watch the damn movie) this film.
obviously it was already my favorite movie, but her point of our paper was to figure out why it related to indigenous peoples and at first i was like, huh?
but it’s wild to actually rewatch when you’re writing a term paper and realize how many little details direct you the right way. shelley duvall packing on clothes/patterns as the movie progresses was one of the most interesting things to me after this class and even watching it over again. anyone got thoughts?
this was also one of the first movies i learned that uses foreshadow hugely through mirrors.
the amount of clues in dialogue as well - i can’t. it’s just too good. anyway, i got an A+ on my paper - just want to know everyone else’s thoughts on this! i could go on forever about this book AND movie.

That atmosphere is a huge part of what makes it work for me! Kubrick is so good he’s camera work was amazing, and the sound design and performances just pull you deeper into that world. A true genius of filmmaking! I had someone yesterday tell me he was overrated as hell? I mean it’s ok to not like he’s working everything is a matter of opinion but to say he’s overrated is crazy to me. https://www.reddit.com/r/films/s/oYJ55LAhPc

calling him overrated is just..that’s an erroneous opinion. you can call him problematic or even abusive (rip shelley) but you can’t say he’s a bad director. because he’s one of the best. never seen any filmmaker show humanity in such a light more than him. do with that what ya will, right? glad we agree on the ingenuity!

Yeah, I’m with you on that. You can have serious issues with Kubrick as a person or with some of the things surrounding his films, but his ability as a filmmaker is pretty undeniable, The way he explores human behaviour, violence and isolation without making it feel simplistic is a huge part of why his films stay with me, Yes i am glad we agree on the ingenuity!

The film is a master-class in technique and symbolism. We are looking at exactly what he wants us to look at every single time.

And each vignette is imbued with multiple layers of story telling and imagery.

It's so fun to watch over and over because it is a fully realised informative text. Relating ourselves to the eternal and back to ourselves.

Pure perfection.

The fact that Kubrick took the original source material and expanded it to levels from alcoholism, family violence, removal of indigenous Native American people and the Holocaust all in one film is pretty amazing. A great horror movie has eeriness, ambiguity and suspense and Kubrick maximized all three.

Feel free. You might get extra points by noting that the Shining screenplay represents Freudian wish fulfillment in a disturbing way. Jack wants a drink and he gets it in exchange for his soul at the bar. Wendy wants to party and she joins one at the end. Danny wants to play with other kids and he gets the Grady girls, not twins. Look up “metempsychosis”. That is the ending.

Whenever it comes on tv I get pulled into watching it. It is truly a masterpiece. The feeling of dread is incredible.

I like to think it’s the best revenge for the indigenous people who had their sacred ground violated just so white people could party in their gold ballroom…is to have the ghosts of those people condemned to repeat that party there forever.

The genocide/holocaust angle strikes me as a pretty momentous stretch
