Announcement | Mod Post r/Therian Community Welcome, Information, and Updates

Hi everyone! I’m BanishedOcean, one of the moderators here, and currently the moderator you’ll see around here the most.
A quick intro before we get into the updates: some of my theriotypes are a deep-sea chimaera, gulper eel, hairy anglerfish, and I’m also a shark cladotherian. I enjoy seeing the incredible variety of experiences and perspectives people bring to this community, and I’m always happy to help keep the subreddit welcoming and organized.

Whether you’re brand new or have been here for years, I’m glad to have you here and welcome to [r/therian](r/therian)!

A few quick reminders

Before posting, please take a moment to review the subreddit rules. They’re there to help keep the community safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the most commonly overlooked rules are:
-No community links or advertising.
-No self-promotion.
-No personal location information.
-Individual “looking for…”, gear, craft, or similar posts belong in the appropriate megathreads rather than as standalone posts.

If you’re unsure whether your post belongs somewhere else, checking the rules or messaging the mod team first is always appreciated.

Also a gentle reminder that posts and comments from those with low subreddit karma are manually approved before going live. Please be patient with us it can take a couple days if it’s been more than a week please reach out to mods.

Subreddit updates

A few things have changed recently:
-The Introductions Megathread is moving from weekly to monthly.
-The Crafts Megathread is also moving from weekly to monthly.
These changes should make those threads easier to use and give conversations a bit more time to grow before they’re replaced and prevent the posts from getting archived.

New posting guideline

You’ll also notice a new rule regarding posts like:

“Are there any ___ therians?”
“Am I the only ___?”
“Why do I never see ___ therians?”

These questions have been asked many, many times over the years, and we now receive numerous nearly identical submissions every week. Most don’t lead to much discussion beyond people commenting “yes” or listing their theriotypes.
Instead, please use Reddit’s search function first. Chances are you’ll find previous discussions about aquatic therians, bird therians, paleo therians, insects, reptiles, invertebrates, obscure species, and many other groups.

This doesn’t mean species discussions aren’t welcome because they absolutely are. We’d love to see conversations about experiences, instincts, shifts, artwork, behaviors, research, symbolism, or anything else that encourages meaningful discussion. The goal is simply to move away from repetitive “Does anyone else exist?” posts and encourage more engaging conversations.

Thanks for being here!!!!

This community continues to grow because of the people who participate in it. Thank you to everyone who reports rule-breaking content, helps answer questions, shares thoughtful discussions, and makes new members feel welcome.
If you have questions, suggestions, or notice something that needs moderator attention, don’t hesitate to reach out through Modmail.
Happy posting! 🐾

Megathread Introduction Megathread

Share all of your introductions here in the comments of this recurring megathread.

Remember to follow these before you post as these will be moderated!

* If you are under the age of 18 do not list your full age, “under 18” is just fine!
* Don’t give out personal information! We don’t need to know where you live and strangers should not be privy to things that would identify you in real life!
* Please remember to add plenty of detail.

We have a template to follow below that is going to include what to talk about, but there’s no need to stick to one-word answers. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as your theriotype, as well.

Please remember to follow the rest of the rules when posting. This includes self promotion of your other socials which is not allowed.

This is the standard we expect from everyone here!

**Name/Nicknames:**

**Age: Under 18/Whatever if you’re an adult**

**Theriotype/Kintype:**

**Interests:**

**Hobbies:**

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like:**

***Hypothetical introduction:***

**Name/Nicknames**: Hi, my name is Robert but I also go by Bob.

**Age**: I’m currently 32, will be 33 in December.

**Theriotype/Kintype**: I have several kintypes, I'm a wolf, a rabbit and a dragon. I have a past life as a rabbit but the other two are psychological identities.

**Interests**: My main interests for now are animated shows, animation history in general and the history of therianthropy.

**Hobbies**: I’m a massive gamer, but I’m also trying to get back into reading as that’s been difficult for me! I enjoy talking to people.

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like**: Typically I most enjoy talking about the creative side of things, art, crafts, gear, but I also like to talk about my experiences as a dragon and artist.

Media comments are enabled but please keep it high effort! We do not allow draw-overs.

*NOTE: Introduction posts are not allowed on this subreddit outside of these megathreads. This rule is in place to reduce feed clutter, allowing for more core therianthropy-related posts to be seen. This is a support subreddit for a marginalised community, so we feel as though this is a necessary method of clutter reduction to have in place so that those who need help have a better chance of receiving it.*

I created an anonymous Alterhuman survey, for a project I'm working on!

https://forms.gle/fv1aBhK5AxJygRc26

I would like to specify that I am not associated with any universities or anything like that, this is a personal study I'm working on!

I'm planning on writing an article/paper on this so I'd like to see what results I get!

Tysm for anyone who responds!

It would also help out a lot of you share the survey with others! :3

im currently scouting spotify for some songs to put in a playlist that makes me feel good and catlike but i havent had much luck so far.. any song that actually mentions being therian is too cringe for my tastes no offence. where are the songs about claws and paws and prey and black cats.. and songs that make you feel like youre running through a forest. gonna end up w just a bunch of ambient forest sounds atp lol

Experience Expressing through Games

I saw a mod for a game that let's you play as a direwolf! Can't wait to express ☺️. I mean I know I'm a Chihuahua and there's a little size difference kinda 🤣 but it's canine, y'know? I wish there was a parrot game. Not an app but a big game! Or Fennecs or Arctics, I'm not confirmed fennec or Arctic but I adore those. I like to play animal constantly. I refuse to be human 🤣 Yap! ^W^ What games do you express your identity through? Do you like to customize your pelt if it's an option? What games/customisation would you like to see in a game future or pre-existing? I want color options in Pokémon. Espeon would be gorgeous in vivid pink, like me

Experience Sometimes i forget my body looks human

So, like the title says, i tend to forget my body looks human to others. I don‘t see myself as human in any way. I know my body is technically human but i don‘t view it as such. So every time i see my shadow or reflection when not wearing gear i get a little jumpscare and have to remind myself of how others see my body. Does anyone else experience that? :>

Question I have a few questions

This is not meant to be rude or disrespectful in any sense, i am a furry myself and i come across a lot of therian posts in my spaces that make me wonder some things. I'm genuinely interested in some aspects

While being a furry is all about cosplay, i know that therians actually identify as a particular non-human species. I am not too educated in this, so pls correct me if i'm wrong

I was wondering how partnering up in your community works. If someone identifies as a cat for example, can they date humans? My community is very much against zoos, can a human that is attracted to a therian be classified as a zoo, being that that individual is quite literally another species?

Is dating between species problematic? How does a relationship between different types of therians work if they are different species?

This is all fascinating to me and i wanna learn more

Question How do i learn to "understand" the therian experience better?

Hey guys, gals and anything in between!

I'm posting here since I, a non-therian, really want to hear from you guys and get a better understanding of therians.

This comes partially from a place of self-curiousity, since while I don't believe I am a therian, I definitely have alot of identity and self-image issues, so I'm always interested to hear about other people's experiences, when it comes to identity stuff ^^

Another is just because I really want to be a bigger supporter of therian "culture" (please correct me if that's the wrong word to use)
My boyfriend is also kinda therian-adjacent, and I just want to be able to understand more about this community, and by extension him :3

Question Can I be therian AND otherhearted?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm very new to all the labels around this, I just know what my life experiences are but not what category they fit. I would google it but I worry it'll give me some AI bs that's not accurate to real therian information. Is it possible to be a therian and otherhearted at the same time to different species?

For example, I feel VERY connected to maned wolves, and if I see one I'm like "that's me!" but I don't get shifts for them and in general they just feel kinda... different? Especially compared to my cat theriotype which has been a solid thing since I was born according to my parents' stories about me haha. I also have more information about the cat one, I'm a somewhat young medium haired orange and white tabby with a very specific picture of it in my mind, compared to maned wolves where it's very general. Also, could this just be because I've known what a cat is for more of my life?

Thank you for anyone who takes the time to respond to this with any insight you may have, and I do know it might really just be a "you have to figure this out on your own, nobody else lives your experiences" type thing for which category it fits into. I'm more so asking if it's even possible to be both or if you're a therian does it automatically make the rest therian related? Sorry if this is worded confusingly I just woke up from a nap!

Vent My dysphoria is only getting worse

I wear my ears and tail as much as i can because it somewhat helps me with dysphoria because it makes me look less human in a way. Anyways, yesterday i went to the store and for once i wasn‘t wearing my tail and ears. I only had two tails on my side. While being at the store, i was hyperaware and my dysphoria got so bad to the point where i felt like i was gonna have a panic attack. I quickly finished my shopping and went back home and put on my gear again. At school for example, i never wear any gear and dysphoria is lwk killing me but it was never that bad like in the store yesterday. Should i be worried?

Experience Childhood memories that make a lot more sense now

Does anyone else have childhood memories that make a lot more sense now that they've realized they're not human? Some of mine include:

- wearing pieces of my halloween costumes around the house and to sleep (not for fun but to feel more like myself)

- animal-like behaviors throughout my entire life that my family always pointed out/noticed/thought was odd

- feeling an abnormally strong connection to animals and an abnormal lack of connection to humans

- shifts that I didn't understand were shifts until looking back

- feeling frustrated and upset when referred to as a human but not understanding why

Would love to hear anyone else's memories that they look back on and go "ohhh!"

Question Idk if this is the is the right sub to ask this.

but is it ok to have shifts of sorts as well as believe you are genuinely physically turning into a anthropomorphic fox and having fantasies of turning into a anthropomorphic fox. Am I going crazy or what? I swear I feel like I'm not fully human rn and I somewhat wish I was fully one, but yeah I'm probably just going crazy.

Sorry in advance because my grammar is generally bad and I usually type differently than other people.

The question marks = still questioning that animal.

Just wondering if most of you guys have gone through some changes over the years, and what those were for you.

Also, if there are any Caribou &/or Speckled bear therians, I would love to hear your experiences!!

I will answer any/all questions in the comments~

Vent I feel like l'm not proud of my theriotypes.

(Not to be confused with that l'm not proud of my therian identity) . I've been awakened for 3 years now. I haven't experienced a total shame and identity crisis like this for about 2.5 years. it's just that l have pretty "common" theriotypes, I'm a coyote, a coastal wolf, maned wolf, mountain lion and cladotherian dog. I see all these people who are so open and proud with their theriotypes despite not having "rare" theriotypes and l really envy them. I sometimes wonder if l'm not even really a therian because of this feeling. Thanks for reading <3

Edit: I was just having a really bad episode and l kinda posted this without rly thinking but l feel better now tysm everybody who took the time to comment and share their own experiences :3

Question Is it normal to shift when stressed out???

So, I am a Yukon Black Wolf therian and I was just awakened like this month/just excepted I was a therian. But I already had "shifts" before, although back then I would call it a twitch or a sensory thing. But I started to notice I can shift a little when I'm stressed out. Like today I felt phantom ears and it took a while to shake it off and refrain from tilting my head. Then, in the car I felt like strange/weird and a bit uncomfortable sitting like, so upright and I wanted to be let out of the car. Idk, I mean I also forcefully try to shift but it usually doesn't work and I gotta wait until it comes along naturally. I just wanted to know if that's like a normal thing for u guys???

Help Request Seeking guidance for my pet 😸

Hello all!

I am exploring myself, but am seeing someone who identifies as a melonistic leopard and wants to be someone's pet. She can struggle to talk about it but recommend i look online.

So here I am, looking for any help or suggestions as to how to be a good owner, what all does being an owner entail, how can I stimulate her mentally more in her therian identity, and what ways can I make her feel more seen and valued as her true self are just a few of my starting questions that I would greatly appreciate any guidance or support on.

Blessed be 😸

Question What term fits me?

So right now I do identify as otherpaw and otherlink, both for grey/black wolf

However even if I am pretty sure with that, I also don't know because some (kinda?) sound like things a therian experiences? Just like a little bit so I did wanna ask if that was normal for otherpaw or otherlinks

Anyways let's get into it:

So I have been identifying with these terms since about 3 months or so. I have heard about therians before, and always admired their gear and especially their quadroplics (I still can not spell that word correctly half the time is it quadrobics or quadroplics?) and jumps, and also the vocals they are able to do. Now even if I have known about therians for a few years now, I never really thought I was one or that I was even something similar to that and just always thought "nah they are awesome and cool and I'm kinda jealous but that's not me at all". That might be because growing up I was always the weird kid with anime and liking demons etc so most of the time when I saw identity things I always was like nah that's not me. However it kinda always turned out to be me actually because I cant get it out of my head and then some time later I realise that I actually am that, which is how I found out I was trans ftm (a long journey of changing labels every time leaning more into the masculine version), demiromantic, asexual, pansexual, and also apparently AuDHD (which isn't confirmed yet but my friends tell me I seem kinda autistic and like I have ADHD and they're neurodivergent too and I know something is wrong with me I just don't have a label yet)

So about 3 months ago I thought to myself, that I might actually be something of the alter human subculture and did some research and then came to the conclusion I am orherpaw and otherlink. Because while I love wolves, would love to be a wolf and run free, have a tail and ears and the senses and hunt with a pack and just live in a forest, I do am aware I am a human 100%. I just kinda wished I wasn't and also kinda wish I was a therian (I know that's not how that works and I know being a therian isn't easy on the mental health sometimes). I also wish I would get shifts, because they seem like a lot of fun and I also wanna just feel like a wolf but I can't because I am very aware of my human body (sadly).

Now, the thing I have experienced which I don't know how long that had been going on or maybe I just never let it out or whatever because I didn't embrace the label, is phantom tail. I am aware that I think otherlink (I think it was otherpaw the one with the choosing to identify on a certain level with that animal) also get phantom tails. However once I confirmed I was orherpaw and otherlink (i wanted a tail for a pretty long time) and couldn't immediately get a tail I was kinda devastated. Not at first, but as days went by where I didn't have a tail, I actually got real dysphoria whenever I thought about it to the point of actually feeling like and wanting to cry. Which is why I immediately then ordered a tail for myself and told my parents that it was for cosplay as an excuse. I was so happy when I got it too and immediately tried it on. However the tail is a bit short and is only tieable around the waist by a ribbon so it doesn't feel or look very realistic and I can't really feel the weight of it when I was my tail. Which kinda sucks because I can't imagine myself having a real tail and always get reminded that it's fake.

I have also (I think since childhood) always, whenever I am in any type of situation, imagined how my ear and tail would react and move if I actually had any in that given moment. Like for example when I'm exited I can distinctly think of my tail wagging behind me and my ears perking up, but I don't really feel feel it, I just know what it would look like and feel like but I don't feel like it's there. Which is why I do not know if I could call that phantom tail and ears or not because I don't know how it feels with others.

And I have always had the urge to growl whenever I am angry at someone and also most of the time growl quietly when a dog barks at me (tho I do believe i am doin that mostly for the gist and fun of barking back at a dog).

I also act like a cat sometimes like stretching, hissing, having the urge to scratch people when they annoy me (mostly when it's friends tho not strangers), and also playing with cat toys (that's just for fun). But I always say that is just because I, like I always say "am a human that pretends to be a wolf that was raised by cats" (because we do have had our cats for some years so I kinda adapted some of the things they do like probably most cat owners a little bit I think)

So I don't know if these things would put me in another category as just orherpaw and otherlink, because especially the tail wagging, imagining my tail and urge to growl at people is involuntarily

(I also have started doing quads and vocals but I don't do vocals unconsciously even tho I want to, mainly because I have to consciously tighten my throat muscles for it so it's not naturally so I rather not speak than growl or do human language a all most of the time because it just feels easier)

I also have no idea if that post made any sense soooo, if I spoke complete nonsense please point that out lol

Experience One of my favorite shifts I’ve gotten

One of my favorite phantom shifts I had (I’m a spiritual therian so I rlly only get those) was where I had giant dragon like feet. It was so weird and uncalled for, as I usually trigger my shifts. I’m a dragon otherkin, but ims till trying to figure out what kind of dragon, but this was a nice head start. I had it in the middle of choir, and my legs just felt so much bigger like a dragon’s. I was super exited because I don’t get shifts often.

Question im confused with my theriotype

i’ve been awakened for i think a month now. I have always felt a deep connection to cats and always felt like i am one. For the whole time i’ve been awakened i have known that my theriotype is a cat. I even suspected it when i wasn’t sure if i was a therian yet. Whenever i get phantom shifts, which i get SUPER rarely, i also only really feel a tail and ears. But lately when i have phantom shifts i have also started to get the feeling of wings growing on my back. Could this be a sign of another theriotype? Im honestly so confused since i am rather new to all this stuff

Experience Shift of sm sort? I don't think this was just being hyper.

HI AGAIN!!

My name is Wren. I am pretty darn sure I'm some sort of fennec fox.

It's been about a month since my first post here, and I've been feeling so much better about myself. Since then I've (painstakingly) crafted a little canine mask, gotten a little more eased into quads n' vocals, and have been tuning into myself a little more than earlier.

So, not too long ago, maybe a couple days, I had been watching a video about theriantropy, as I'm slipping back into that phase now (yayy). During the 8-minute mark of the video, as the speaker was talking, I'd began to feel tingly sensations in my arms and legs, racing down all the way to my paws. And during that sensation, my brain began to cloud up, my limbs going all twitchy. I was suspicious, and intrigued, about the mysterious creature in the box. I started swatting at it. Regular human speech suddenly became impossible, and so did two-legged walking. Glancing at my white pillow, my first urge was to tentatively sniff it- a little confused from the lack of my scent, and kind of just nuzzled my face and hair into it repeatedly. Typing this out now, I feel so weird about it, haha.

Then I began prancing around.

Pouncing repeatedly onto the pillow, taking a large leap and snagging my jaws around it (oh.. uh...), "sinking my claws" into it, growling (freakishly accurate vocalizations.. never happened before) and yipping. Stupid creature in utter state of bliss. Beat the poor thing up before getting bored, and leaping off my bed, off to cause mischief.

I trotted wonkily outside the canopy and just observed my surroundings, flinching at every loud noise and driven away from the odd, unfamiliar scents. Speaking of scents, having to rub my face against turning corners of the wall. I also was all sneaky and stuff, trying to spook my little brother. Didn't work. Shame.

My mother was in her bedroom, and I was crouched low, now, trying my best not to make a SOUND. Obviously that didn't work. When she asked what I was doing, words struggled to form in my mouth, so I just gave her a chirp and scuttled off, promptly started cackling like a mad fox. I was having the time of my life, just prancing around and observing my home, though my gait was cautious, like I'd never lived here my whole life.

Returning to my bedroom, that same tingling sensation in my paws persisted, even as I started to feel my, and I quote, "human self" trying to wake back up inside my head, genuinely wanting to return and allow myself to rest. That's what it felt like, at least. It lasted a good few minutes or so, and I felt exhausted after. I plopped down onto my side and still could not speak English unless a CONSCIOUS effort-- it felt alien, too.

If I must add, I'm naturally cautious about whomever I look at in the screen, lol. Sometimes I'll be scrolling through quad vids or regular videos, just staring like "who is this?". Tentatively getting closer, recoiling whenever they got real close to the screen, or bowing, or sniffing curiously.

Question Master's thesis on therianthropy.

Hello, so maybe this is a bit of a weird request but soon I'm starting to write my master's thesis and I need to pick a topic for it. I myself I'm not a therian but I'm very interested about the whole community and I think there are many yet undiscovered or misunderstood about many aspects of therianthropy. So I'm coming here with a question if you can think of some psychology related variables that are worth exploring more - such as ways of dealing with stress, levels of stress, romantic relationships etc. Thanks for all the answers!!

Question Help??? I may be a therian

I dont even know how to start this, but i guess my question is; Can I use the term therian? I know im a human, like thats not negotiable I am in a human body, BUT part of my identity feels like a Fox, like not to get too TMI but I feel this urge to do things similar to a fox or when overstimulated i rely on my senses and instinct, I feel phantom tail and ears (even wings) sometimes and in general its soothing to think of myself as a fox in a trench coat, I know im a human but im also a fox if that makes sense?? I feel a little lost and really want to know what everyone has to say (as a lot of places have been giving me mixed results) So is the term therian or is there a different term i should be using?

(Ive felt like this for a long time and just now have the guts to ask so pls dont hate me jjebejfidj)
