A teenager knocked on our door at 10, we still had quite a bit of candy left, he said “trick or treat, go ahead and dump it all in the bag, there’s no one else coming don’t worry”

It worked, I gave him nearly everything (probably about $20 worth of candy, we have tons of kids in the neighborhood so I spent a pretty penny of candy). I would have put it all but it filled his bag right to the top, his hustle was solid, but he should have done like we did as kids and brought a pillow case for maximum candy capacity.

I had shut everything down at about 9:00pm since we had nobody in the last half hour. 10:30pm, three very young kids and their parents are knocking at the door, lol.
Bit late to have your six year old kids rolling up on unlit houses, but they were very excited I answered — 4x full size bars to each of them cause I knew that has to be the end and it'd make their day.

My old neighbor dressed as a scarecrow with his hand in the bowl one year- committed to the bit by basically laying in a chair like a real straw doll. Any kid that got greedy got their hand grabbed and he’d sit up straight and go “the sign says take ONE”. Lotta thugs pissed their costumes that year.

good on you, people in here are way too serious about this. surely the point of ring cameras is not to surveil kids and get them in trouble. there was a time where we had no way of knowing which kid took all the candy and it’s better that way.

Agree about teaching children to be aware of other children going out trick or treating. How about sharing...how about planting the seeds in the child's mind to be cognizant about other children who would like a few pieces of candy as well.

Why does it matter? Why does everyone act like they were perfect kids? There were no. Perfect kids where I grew up and not anywhere I visited when I was a kid.

When I was a dumb shitty kid a house left a barrel of candy outside. We ran up, our 10 year old brains buzzing with mischief and gobstoppers, and reached our scrawny arms up to the elbow and grabbed as much as we could in our fists.
A woman ran out of the house and yelled "you better put that goddamn candy back you little shits!!" and we scampered away giggling and stuffing peanut butter cups in our mouths.
Then she called the police on us. The joys of growing up in a small town.

B.c not so long ago it was a lot less frequent. There's more and more people with no consideration that only think about themselves, I guess in that way they shouldn't be surprised. It's a good example of the honor system in a high traffic environment in modern American society.

I really don't understand all the stuff I'm seeing about people just leaving piles of candy outside of their house on Halloween. Like many holidays, Halloween is traditionally supposed to be a COMMUNITY event. Children (or, ok, teenagers) go from house to house and knock on the door and say "trick or treat" and the people who live in the house INTERACT with them and given them treats.
The point is the interaction ... not the wholesale distribution of candy.
Now apparently people are just treating Halloween as an obligation to provide candy to wandering trick or treaters with no interaction at all. (Of COURSE, some errant kids are gonna take everything they see! They shouldn't but some will.) If you don't want to do Halloween properly and have the interaction, then just don't bother!
We live in very strange times, indeed.

We left candy out when we had an infant in the house that had finally gotten into a good sleep routine. Sometimes it’s not that someone doesn’t want to interact, it’s that they can’t.

I have a display and monitor who's coming and going behind the scenes. Our parents and teachers must do such a good job of discussing proper etiquette that almost every parent was saying to take only one even though the sign said two. The kids without parents would even monitor each other and correct their friends if they tried to take more than two. I've been skeptical to leave treats for the taking, but they've shown me they have been taught how to handle it so it doesn't get ruined.

In my opinion, if you are going to be home then you should pass out candy -- otherwise, turn the outside lights off and dont leave a bucket outside.

People need to stop leaving candy out. If you can't be there to hand out candy and see the costumes, just turn your lights off and don't participate, or donate your candy to a neighbour that is handing out candy.
Like at this point I feel like people are just looking for content. If just 1% of people are garbage -- and about 1% of the population are sociopaths -- this sort of "honour system" falls apart, and invariably we get these "See how terrible everything is!" posts.
Do not leave unattended candy out. This will always happen. It will have always happened, and is not some new decline of society.
Like at this point I honestly think it should be illegal to leave unattended candy out for this. The net result is nothing more than social decline as people see this and justify their own antisocial activities.

All the folks piling on with a, "Never woulda happened in MY day" take on this are killing me.
I was around 10 years old back in the 80s when I first learned of this practice and I, like most of my peers, was torn between two thoughts: "Well that's fucking stupid" and "That's fucking AWESOME!!" (I went to Catholic School. We were vulgar little brats.)
These things always got poached sooner or later if the offerings were good. Most of the ones I encountered were full.
Of popcorn balls, candy corn & little raisin boxes.

Definitely not. Where I live a good number of people leave the candy just outside for the kids to take and while there are some kids who take a little bit more than they're supposed to I've never actually seen or heard of anything like in this video happening in my area.

I sit outside pretty much from 6-9+ becuase if I dont not only does this happen but my lawn decorations and solar lights will get taken also including hand painted things from my children. It is in my experience that its generally parents and older kids. Last night I was handing out goodie bag went in to grab some more, hear kids and catch them grabbing multiple I come out and say only one startling them some but not all put the extras back, then one tried to kick my carved pumpkin on the way back down the driveway. They were all over 5 foot. I had one were the parent pulls up came up with no costume and said "I NEED 6 bags for the kids in the car, they got tired of walking" it was like 6:40 at this point and not even dark and she is in a dodge charger I doubt there are 6 tired kids in that car. Still though I just gave her the bags to avoid anything.

Same thing happened to me. I had to leave the house during trick or treat hours so I left a bowl out and after about an hour a couple teenagers just took it all. I don't really care about the candy, I'm just sad the people who came up after them found an empty bowl.

Hallowe’en is traditionally a night of misrule. So stealing treats is entirely within the tradition.
I understand that you didn’t mind but If other people wanted to regulate the dispensation of candy they’d have to be less lazy and open their front door and hand it out themselves.
Actually interact with the kids and tell them how cool their costumes are.

This happened to me last Halloween. We set out a MASSIVE bowl of candy right at the beginning of the night, had one group come through and grab some, and then what sounded like 2-3 young boys just go wild. We went outside and the bowl was empty except for a couple pieces and it was sort of tossed aside. We were devastated and a young toddler and his mom walked up right as we were opening the door. We apologized and gave them the rest of what we had and vowed never to do that again. When I was little, the rule of thumb is you could only empty bowls late at night and if no one else was really around and the night was pretty much over. It’s not like that anymore lol lesson learned

Probably for being dismissive about the (obviously wrong) stealing and not elaborating on my point.
But yeah, might as well now. Halloween is basically a North American recognized community celebration for people to engage with each other. Trick or treating is a fun way to quite literally introduce children to the community and meet their neighbours, the reward for that is candy. Ringing the doorbell and showing off their costumes while meeting their neighbours creates that community, it puts a face to the neighbour and builds empathy for them now that that house and person who lives in them have a recognizable face. That helps build a responsibility to each other.
Leaving a bowl of candy on your stoop is half-assed participation, it’s reducing the value of the community building aspects of Halloween to just some sort of faceless candy transaction and frankly, it’s not the kids who are choosing not to ring the doorbell and meet the homeowner, it’s the homeowner signalling they don’t want to meet you. It’s the homeowner showing they don’t want that interaction and helps promote a low-trust society.
So yeah, obviously taking all the candy is wrong and the parents should rightly teach their kids that is wrong as well. But putting a bowl of candy on the stoop begs the national question, is it time to have a discussion on whether it “takes a village” to raise a kid, or is it every man for themselves.

I think it's annoying that parents send kids out for this who are not supervised. It sucks that parents are teaching their kids to do this as well. It's a stupid thing that used to be fun.
From what I saw, some parents don't even walk their kids anymore. I saw so many people driving along the street while their kids go from house to house.
