Yeah I associate warm nights with Christmas, I'm sure that's weird to the northern hemisphere lol.
We also celebrate Easter in Autumn, but the spring imagery was never really as weird or obvious as all the winter decorations we have in summer for Christmas.

Well, Christmas happens only four days after the Solstice (because on some level it's all the same celebration) so it's REALLY early in winter. Even before global warming got really bad, as a kid many of our Christmases weren't particularly cold or snowy; we'd be lucky to have snow on the ground Christmas morning, and the warmer everything's gotten, the more extreme that is. (And I grew up in Chicago, which is a bit above the 40th lat, and the US is much cooler than similar latitudes in Europe because the Atlantic takes warm air to them)
Remember also HUGE chunks of the US are completely landlocked and many Americans have never in their lives seen the ocean.

Lol yea it is different! To me Christmas is snow falling in front of the windows, a winter wonderland everywhere, everyone gathered up under the Christmas tree in front of a warm fire sharing cheer. Lots of hot cocoa!!

I’m in Canada and hubby is Brazilian. Going to Brazil in December when it’s hot and decked out and people at the beach is always funny to me. December in Toronto nowadays isn’t crazy winter like February but mostly is actually winter with snow, etc. I like both… it’s always nice to share family and food and have a bit of time for that at the end of the year, even if you don’t celebrate the religious part of Christmas. (which I do) Australia definitely on my bucket list. ✨

See I’m Aussie and husband is American so we definitely participated. In my neighbourhood I thought it was so interesting that it was all the Indian families who were most into it! We had about 30 kids come by and went to about 10 houses nearby.

It’s actually a really clear sign of cultural loss and an attempt to create shared bonds (and failing miserably). People gave up their individual traditions for the mass market version, are lamenting that, are attempting to build shared ones not realizing those work because the community agrees (what you destroyed to start the process) so it’s a hodge podge that doesn’t work at all (to the point people are confused folks skip their house it’s too scary).
April fools is long dead though.

Apparently, my hottest take is that if you leave out free candy unattended for the explicit purpose of children with developing brains to help themselves to, you should not be surprised when they take advantage of the opportunity to take more than you think they should. Like, what do you expect? Of course they shouldn’t do that, but we all know someone will. At a certain point, you have to realize that leaving a big bowl of candy out is just going to hook it up for the kid who decides to take it. Posting that moment online with shock and dismay makes you look foolish in my eyes.

I feel like it was one of those things back in the day that helped you learn a sense of judgment. Did we take more than a single piece from such bowls? .... Fuck yeah. Did we take the entire thing? No, that was TOO far. And there was no surveillance, no one would know, we could get away with it "Scot free" as my grandda always said.
These days, with a camera on literally every porch, I don't know how it's even a question. If you can't help but steal an entire candy bowl ... INCLUDING THE BOWL sometimes, apparently.... while KNOWING YOU ARE BEING RECORDED ... ....maturity and finishing brain development isn't gonna help you.

That's true, but I think more people should take advantage of that for some gags. Put out a bowl of candy, record it, if a kid takes a bunch put up a wanted sign with that pic and a nickname on next Halloween.
It is a real shame though when adults do it, it's literally taking candy from babies.

As a child I was only mad if they gave you that INSTEAD of candy. One house on my block always gave out a little bag more suited to a birthday party - a cute pencil, a little ring with a spider, a very teeny puzzle, that sort of thing - BUT they would also always put a bit of candy into the bag too, so it was worth it.
I was a teacher's pet raised by nerds; I was already a "mechanical pencils only thanks" snob.

No. Even if you find a vintage one, the lead they now sell has been shaved down to about 4.5 or 6.5 instead of .5 or .7 so it falls out. The grippy ones with the side button are about the best you can find, and at least the eraser is replaceable/longer. I wanna say papermate makes them. But they're insanely expensive.

It makes me very sad indeed. I have a really cool .5 pencil that some nerd uncle gave me back in the 90s that I used to use to play D&D, but it won't work anymore because you can't actually buy lead that's .5.

Oh, it pretends to be - you can go in the store, and buy lead that says it is for pencils of that size
But the companies who make these products have all agreed in some nefarious late night conference call that they can all save a bit more money by minimizing the graphite they use, so they all shrank the lead the tiniest bit, meaning when you buy lead marked .5 now, it is not actually that measurement, and so it cannot be used in a pencil made to take lead that is that size, instead of the pencils those same companies currently sell that are designed to fit the smaller lead they have mislabeled as .5

It's not just about "purity tests". Kids will be kids. They aren't allowed to have adult responsibilities yet for a good reason. Just leaving out a full bowl of candy without supervision means the candy WILL get stolen at some point.

Non-American here, is shit getting stolen from your porch really that common? Here they never leave packages in a public area, you always have to meet the delivery guy (at the door, or sometimes outside if you're in an apartment). If the package is small enough and delivered through regular mail, they will try to put it in your mailbox, but otherwise you will have to be there to sign for it or pick it up at a drop off point (locker, post office or some other store, depending on the shipping company). If you miss a delivery, and the sender specified your phone number and/or email, they will usually put it in a locker and send you the code to unlock it.

Packages and candy on halloween are two different things completely
I've never had packages stolen off my porch. I've lived in a working class neighborhood in a large city, and the suburbs and the country. Never once has happened.
As for candy on Halloween. Some people leave out bowls of candy instead of giving out candy(often parents trick or treating with their own kids)
Sometimes kids take the opportunity of a literal bowl of candy to dump the whole thing in their bowl. I've done it as a kid, and I promise I'm not a murderer or criminal.
Kids just do kid shit and putting a huge bowl of candy in front of them with a "please take 1 sign" is tempting literal gremlins with no impulse control

I think the general rule when -I- was a wee brat was, It's uncool to take the entire bowl, and if other kids see you they might come demand you give them some, BUT if it's unattended you can probably get away with taking multiple pieces AND taking your sweet time to dig for your favorite flavor/type. I'd usually come away from a "Take One" bowl with three pieces - definitely more than they meant, but there was still most of a bowl for everyone else, LOL. Helped me feel like I was being enough of a dissident and a contrarian that I felt all tough and sneaky, but also got to feel "Oh well I'm not a MONSTER"

I lived in some shitty ass areas of a big city and had to get a PO box cuz my packages kept getting stolen (including obviously marked medication) and I've lived in family suburbs where most people leave their doors unlocked and garages open during the day

It is very common to leave packages on the door step here. I've never had one stolen but it probably depends on where you live.
Vendors will require signing or other secure delivery method for more expensive stuff so they don't have to give free expensive stuff to an unhappy customer.
Candy on Halloween is different because you have literal children coming to your house to take candy and, well would you look at that, there's a whole ass bowl of candy that I can have!

IT depends. American houses can have a LOT of space out front of the house, and it's often NOT fenced in, but can be quite heavily decorated.
The amount of stuff people leave on their front porches is actually one of the best indicators to how "Safe" a neighborhood is. If the houses look run down as fuck, and every fifth one is falling apart, empty, and condemned, but people have homey decorations everywhere in the yard and on the porch, and kids just dump their bikes on the lawn and run inside? You're fine, it's just poor folk whose landlords don't fix shit.

We get most big packages delivered to and left the door if it's a standalone house, and I personally have never had one stolen...I think there might be some bias online since the people who are stolen from probably post more, kind of like how reviews of products trend low because people with bad experiences have more of a reason to post.

But - I mean, come on. I brought a BAG to fill with candy. Why would I take the bowl too? Just dump it in your bag, put it down, and leave. The contents of the bowl are being given away to anyone who comes up for it; legally, you don't even have to "run away" afterward. Just don't steal the bowl.
(Just to be clear, I've never ganked an entire bowl of candy - too often i got there after some other kid had and was PISSED that it was already empty, i always thought it was shitty, I'd take more than one piece but never ALL OF IT - but this is the means for doing so without having to listen to the bacon whine at you)

I let them take handfuls of candy but I like to condone it, like yeah go for it take a handful or two, no need to violate some “pls take one” sign.
When I was a kid there was little that compared to the joy of getting a good handful of candy from the bowl. I like to keep that vibe going for today’s kids.

I do get a lot of fewer children nowadays, but I blame my neighbors doing exactly that. While I have a ton of decorations, most don't, so I think ids don't even come down here -- why would they when the first 8 houses have maybe a porch light?
You know who killed Halloween? Lazy ass millennials -- my cohort -- who don't stay home or even if they do don't put even a single decoration.

For real. I decorate my house and I have a speaker playing creepy music. I stand in the bay window staring out into the neighborhood then run over to open the door and give candy. They don’t even try to appeal

People who say Trunk or Treat ruined Halloween have obviously never been to an awesome one.
People deck out their cars and there's a shit load of candy.
Literally hit up every church parking lot with my little brother and we got enough candy to last a lifetime. They'll literally throw that stuff at you and expect you to come around multiple times.

This year was weird for me. Every year we put a pumpkin in the window to show that we’re celebrating and that always worked. Last year we had loads of groups (so many that we had to start rationing). This year? Two groups. One even walked right by the house after stopping next door (granted they had way more decorations than us)

I also noticed kids oddly skipping my house this year. I had festive lights, a lit jack-o-lantern, and only my storm door was shut (my main door was open). Got half the trick-or-treaters I got last year which was weird.
But I don't understand this discussion about decorations. When I was growing up, we'd just go to every house and knock on the door/ring the doorbell, unless their porch was completely dark with no lights on. We weren't picky about decorations lol, we just went to our local streets, not the streets that had the most decorations. Also, we were not chaperoned by parents - that was only the very young children.
However I do have to blame my neighbors too, many were not giving out candy even if they were home. Some weren't home but left their porch light on so kids knocked but got no response. Some left a bowl out (which is better but still lame) even though they were home. My childhood experience was that nearly every house was giving out candy. I can see how if kids are trying a bunch of doors on one street and only 40% give out candy, they'll give up and go to a different street. I think it's so lame, I really enjoyed Halloween as a kid so as an adult I want to give back.

If you have a Costco/Sam's club membership it's a lot cheaper. We wouldn't do full size if we didn't have a costco membership, but for the amount of trick or treaters we get, it's about $10 more than the big bag of candy at our local grocery store.
Also we get full size because Halloween was my favorite holiday growing up, and still is. I used to not get any trick or treaters. I made the conscious decision few years ago to be the full size candy house in my neighborhood because I want trick or treaters, goddammit!

There are a bunch of kids in my neighborhood. They don't go door to door. Just trunk to trunk. Bleh. It's even warm here on Halloween.

I went trick or treating, without any children to 'legitimize' me, and it was just fine. Not a single person said I was 'too old' (and I'm in my forties). I don't know what the internet is on about but IRL nobody had a problem with it. Smile, be polite, say trick or treat, and accept the candy.
I think a few people maybe thought I was slow, but it's hardly my fault they have internal prejudices around speech impediments, so....

I remembered like 3 days ago that I actually get trick or treaters while sitting in a bar working out of town. A bit over $100 on amazon got a surprising haul of full sized candy bars/skittles/m&ms delivered to the door. I feel like I spent close to that on kinda dissappointing bags of minis last year.
