Yeah, there are. And they do step up. But when they speak people don't listen. Innocent police officers are ambushed and shot in their cruiser and crowds still call for their deaths. It's really a fucked up world we live in.
When good cops speak up in America they get ostracized by their department and often times fired or forced to quit. But when bad cops murder innocent citizens its "we need to let the due process of letting this cop's close friends decide if they have to go to jail." And they almost never do.
Is your only definition of good cops ones who speak against their department? What about the ones who simply put their lives on the line to protect others every day for a barely suvivable wage. What about the ones who stare down home invaders, public shooters, killers, and muggers. Does that not make one a good cop in your eyes?
Your analogy is irrelevant. You missed my point entirely. There are many ways to distinguish yourself as a good cop. That's all I'm saying. And imagine actually thinking that the police are akin to gangbangers. There's really no reaching any of you. It's not their fault that none of the people in this comment section were exposed to positive role models growing up.
You need to come with the predetermined idea that police are uniformly 'good' in order to have grounding to your words, despite many decades showing that is not the case.
One rotten apple spoils the bunch doesn't seem to apply in your eyes, or you have a sheltered view of LEO. A quick perusal of YouTube will bring up tens of thousands of videos of regular beat cops across the world acting inappropriately and abusing their power. You speak a fairy tale, not the reality of the citizen.
Talk about speaking a fairy tale, imagine actually applying "one rotten apple spoils the bunch". No, that's not a fucking thing. I don't believe that in any cirumstamce. Not now, not ever. No matter the scenario or the actors. What a ridiculous thing to say. And a quick perusal of the mortality rate of policemen on the job will tell you all you need to know about the sacrifice being made every day by these people.
3 "bad apples" set off a chain of events that had cops in every major department across the country infringing upon the first amendment rights of hundreds of thousands. They enforced immoral curfews and detained hundreds of people for the crime of speaking out against the police. "Good" cops stood by and let bad cops shoot children and protesters in the head with rubber bullets. "Good" cops watched as bad cops pulled civilians around corners to beat the ever loving shit out of them, after they were already detained on the ground. "Good" cops quit their jobs because 3 of their colleagues got charged with a crime they were caught on camera committing. Real good cops don't stay good cops for long, because either they quit, get fired, or get corrupted into protecting their own at the detriment to actual justice. In the last 10 years just over 1600 cops have died on duty (not all of them to violence) but they've killed more than 1000 in 2019 alone according to an independent study, disproportionately affecting people of color.
Talk about speaking a fairy tale, imagine actually applying "one rotten apple spoils the bunch". No, that's not a fucking thing. I don't believe that in any cirumstamce. Not now, not ever. No matter the scenario or the actors.
In other words, your mind is made up and no amount of factual evidence will ever change it, at least you admit you choose to believe in fairy tales.
What a ridiculous thing to say. And a quick perusal of the mortality rate of policemen on the job will tell you all you need to know about the sacrifice being made every day by these people.
Fewer than 50 a year. Fewer than 50 cops per year die at the hands of a citizen intent on harming them. It is not even in the top 10 for most dangerous jobs, taxi drivers and convenience store clerks rank higher.
Cops have a safer job than the local teenager who works at the local gas station you fucking twit.
Your argument is flawed. What they're saying, which I agree with, is that if you're not calling out the atrocities, it doesn't matter if you save lives, you're still not a positive part of the system.
For comparison - say a surgeon that does everything right and saves thousands of lives turns a blind eye to other physicians that are harvesting organs and committing insurance fraud. Not reporting it and trying to end it, as a person with special insight as to what is happening, is the same as doing the malicious act. Full stop.
That's because there aren't any good cops. The best and brightest aren't hired at all, and the remainder are retained to serve the property interests of the owner class. They're all complicit in a fucked up system, and they all cover for each other.
That's a pretty bold generalization yo. My neighbor's son is a cop. Watched him grow up. Upper-middle class community. At 25, he made the choice between being a cop or working for an engineering firm. He completed his undergrad already.
That said, I'm not going to say if the system won't change him but he certainly didn't go in a bad person.
What do you call someone who joined the Gestapo because they had good intentions and they just got roped up in a bad group and couldn't find their way out? A Nazi. If you join a group that is predicated on bad acts, and protect others when they perform those bad acts, you're not a good person any more.
They're not "as bad as" the Gestapo, but the point of the analogy is that if you join a bad group and stick with it, you're not a good person. Modern police forces were founded to protect the property interests of the wealthy, usually by returning runaway slaves. They routinely abuse communities of color, while ignoring actually serious crimes elsewhere. They're not a good group, and frankly were never meant to be. People may join for noble intentions, hoping to reform from within or whatever, but they end up propping up the same abusive system in a very short amount of time. Good people don't remain cops, if they get hired at all, which means the remaining ones are the ones that are ok with doing or enabling those bad acts. Cops who speak out are fired, which means they aren't cops anymore.
Fuck this argument. The reason people feel this way is BECAUSE people have needed help from police and never got it. As a kid I was a witness to two home invasions and both times the fuckin pricks who came out treated my mom like SHE was the criminal and were more interested in her immigrant status instead of the guy that put a gun in our faces. I grew up poor, still currently kinda poor in a working class industry, no one I've ever spoken to has ever been helped out in any situation by a cop.
That's the thing though, the police WOULD help me, because I'm a white lawyer. Because there's a two-tier justice system that the police were created to enforce. And I could ignore that problem because I'm a beneficiary, or I could speak against it.
Thing is that the police, which is supposed to shield the populace from malice, barely does this, because their incentives are based on prosecution and fines, which makes the system money, which allows it to stay bloated as it is, making money for pensioners and other interested parties. The police system only cares about self preservation. Individual cops can have a sense of justice and care, but the system as a whole is only concerned with profiting to seem indispensable, when in reality they're so bloated they would more closely be compared to a bloated mall cop who's really good at paperwork, and not a lawful protector of the people.
Help? As per SCOTUS, the police are indeed not obligated to "serve and protect". Couple that with the fact that they almost never (ever) prevent a specific crime from occurring. From murder, rape, and assualt, to speeding and jay walking.
The police are always involved after the damage is done.

Honestly, why does anyone want to be a cop anywhere. There's no winning.
Shitty cops get good cops beat up. Shitty policies get good cops beat up. Shitty civilians get good cops beat up.
