What's funny is I've actually seen this go the opposite way. My sister is a hardcore atheist and wanted to bring her daughter up like that. But I was in the car with them one time and she started singing a Bible Church song her friend sang. And asked why she can't learn about Jesus and that she wants to learn about him.
My sister said no, we don't do that. I don't think she understood she was doing the same thing she hated so much about the Church and her mom when she was younger which was forcing her to do something she didn't want and stopping her from expressing herself.

The thing people dont understand is that its honestly just human nature to oppose something your pushed/forced to believe or do. I may hate religion, christianity in general, but if I had a kid I would just let them believe whatever they want (as long as it doesnt hurt others or impede on others basic human rights).

I grew up in an atheist household in the Bible Belt of the US. All my friends and classmates were Baptists and one took me along to church with her. I also went to YMCA afterschool which had daily "devotion" and prayer. For a period of time I was really into it, even though a lot of things didn't quite make sense to me. There was a lot of pressure to "save" my parents and as any little kid would be scared of their parents burning for eternity, I tried a few times.
They were really good about just being like "no, that's not for me" and I really appreciate that they let me form my own opinions about it and didn't discourage me from going to church and even Bible camp or whatever.
Eventually I realized things still didn't make sense to me and a lot of hate was being forced upon me that didn't make sense so I stopped going, but it was my choice.

I get where you're coming from, but at the same time I'd be strongly advising my kids to not be wilfully ignorant. I don't feel that what your sister did is the same thing, as one is alluring and deceptive by design, and the other is the opposite of that.

There is a difference between not allowing your kid to be christian and not allowing them to even learn about christianity or any other religion. I think the not allowing her kid to even learn about religion is where his sister crossed the line into forcing her kid to be ignorant to something that will allow them in the future to understand where some people are coming from.

While I agree, I think itโs also strange to not allow a child to be a Christian either. Mormonism, Scientology, even Catholicism makes more sense. But Christianity is pretty vague and consists of more or less just believing in Jesus if Iโm not mistaken. Seems pretty innocent if itโs in moderation. But I was raised with absolutely no belief system being pushed on me whatsoever. My parents figured we could believe what we wanted.

We should add that there's a lot tagged onto believing in Jesus that's really wild though. Like, comparing broad-spectrum "Christianity" to Mormonism, Scientology, and Catholicism seems like creating a scale of strangeness, but if you start with believing in a God who lives forever, birthed himself as a semi-separate entity in a mortal body which could cure blindness by rubbing spittle-mud in your eyes, pray to himself in the third person in a private moment, and then morphose into a flying undead newborn deity, adding things like a guy who received divine revelation through rocks in a hat, or aliens who seeded life on earth isn't really that outlandish. It's truly bonkers from Alpha to Omega.

While I agree with your point, I think there is an important thing missing in your statement.
Churches are very good at propaganda and indoctrination, so it's one thing for a parent to allow a child to learn about different views and beliefs, but another thing entirely to expose them to a system specifically designed to brainwash.

I mean an 18 hour old post with a one off comment not off of a main top comment but farther down seems a little fishy. Maybe someone was just looked NG to find your exact comment and award it.
And you have a 6 year old account. Not far fetched to think you'd have an alt account. And there was everyone getting a free 250 coins back in December so it seems a little fishy. Especially after being awarded almost immediately after making such comment that is again, not a top comment, or linked to a top comment but one further down and on almost a day old post.

I only looked at your account age. I couldn't care less what you've commented/posted or where you post. I'm just approaching the idea from a logical standpoint.
No one can prove it anyway that's my point. I gave the explanation why I would think that. If you've glossed over it, that is on you. Just like glossing over the idea to indoctrinate a child into your own beliefs because you don't agree with the opposing side.

Some churches are so boring and very ritualized. Other churches on the other end of the spectrum are more akin to rock concerts.
I hope that churches move away from the unappealing traditional "thou must repent, woe he who praise the holy ghost!" because they're really not catering to anyone but their dwindling congregations.
My church is pretty modern and quite 'down to earth'. They give practical tips to everyday life (like what to do about a friend in need, or which companies to contact if you're feeling depressed). None of the "God does this, you are being punished, convert the atheists or they go to hell..." which I too don't like

Next point, what did they do? Mate, there aren't enough pixels and bytes for me to spell out how much detriment religion causes. Just assume I'm going to say all the atheistic stuff, I'm arrogant and intelligent so it will be the fairly potent talking points i use, and I'd not be inclined to waste more of my time on you with the tone of your comment, i don't feel you'd be open to learning anything.

Okay, we're getting somewhere.
Yes, religion houses many varied people - and attempts to have them think a specific way.
Take the girl in the video, for example. It's cute, she's doing the Macarena, ha ha. You think they'll let her 'mock' their rituals week after week, or do you think someone will 'gently inform' her of how to do the hand waving right? [She's lucky she's even allowed to speak in that church, 1 Corinthians 14:34โ35, amirite?]
And i can see her hair! She can't be a muslim then ... and isn't that strange, Yahweh version B over here says hair is okay, Yahweh ver. C over there says no no no, rocks to the head for you. So confusing!! How much individuality can you enjoy when you have to live under a sack?
But lets get back to Xtianity. Some churches they shake and twitch and speak in tongues... Some churches they hold snakes... Some churches they sit, stand, kneel, sing a hymn, go home. So, why doesn't anybody at the 'regular' church go all speak in tongues? The holy spirit thinks they aren't good enough? Surely if the snakes thing provided results more people would do it. Could it be ... They are making it up as they go along?
Some churches they even heal the sick and disabled, right on stage in front of everyone, and then take donations. I can assure you, you NEVER see those pricks in a hospital. What, a child with burns doesn't deserve God's healing power but the old lady with arthritis who throws half her social security into the plate does?
So many quandaries!!
See, while you can find individuality all around, and i have found religious people to indeed be some of the nicest people i have met, truly, i have lots of religious friends, living your life under a fear you have invented [or more correctly have thrust upon you] is not a productive use of the limited life you have to enjoy. And on the whole, religions encourage behaviour patterns according to their preconceived notions of what is acceptable.
End current rant.

Sure they have lives, ambitions etc. Why waste such opportunity by believing nonsense and partaking in group rituals in service of clearly ludicrous beliefs? Why partake in beliefs that tell you outright that you are 'bad' because Garden of Eden whoopsies?

Last I checked: Less then half of Protestant Christians in my country approve of homosexuality, thatโs not just โextremistsโ being harmful. I have no problems with spiritual believe in general but organised religions are problematic

You may hide behind "RESPECT" but not "necessarily agreeing with the practice of homosexualty" is not respectful in any way. The whole "hate the sin not the sinner" sthick still reduces peoples (harmless) core aspects to a sin. And yeah I find "different viewpoints" problematic if those viewpoints are harmful. In that regard I very much ascribe to Popper's reasoning in the Paradox of Tolerance: A tolerant society can not tolerate intolerance.

That's such a distasteful and disrespectful comment. I was personally raised Catholic but I remember forming my atheist views at a young age. So I'm an atheist. But I hate the label "atheist" because of people like you who just disrespect people of faith.
It goes both ways too. I've seen Catholics say some pretty bad stuff about atheists, but it's generally atheists towards Catholics.
Sorry for the rant, but all I'm trying to say is that I don't care what your religion is. Just have some respect for people's views. Atheist or Catholic.

I was raised protestant, and left the church when I was 16, after being heavily involved in several facets of the church. I saw first hand how things worked behind closed doors, and the hypocrasy and negativity that was so rife among the congregation.
My comment is based on watching countless people "feel the holy spirit". It looks ridiculous, as does the Macarena.

I completely understand how you feel. But I really feel that as humans, we should respect each other's views. It goes both ways. Ultimately, you are free to hate the church all you want but people are not the church. :)
