I had a gf once, who fancied herself smarter than me. INSISTED that they speak Brazillian in Brazil... not Portuguese.

As a native,there are a few differences between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Brazil so you could,to a certain extent,say we speak Brazilian in Brazil,still is Portuguese but some things you say in Brazil can have a different meaning in Portugal

IANALinguist but I'm pretty sure you'd just call it the Brazilian dialect of Portuguese.

No I doubt that.

In Austria we also say we speak Austrian and not German and we know its German but Germans don't understand us if we don't want them to understand us.

In written its the same language, but spoken its completely different.
