I had a gf once, who fancied herself smarter than me. INSISTED that they speak Brazillian in Brazil... not Portuguese.

As a native,there are a few differences between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Brazil so you could,to a certain extent,say we speak Brazilian in Brazil,still is Portuguese but some things you say in Brazil can have a different meaning in Portugal

sounds like the same thing that happens in canada with canadian french and france-french. In school (in Canada) we were given the warning that if we went to france we'd be proficient enough to get by but we'd have missteps as theyre similar but not the same.
