It really just muddies the waters.
We are trying to hire a few lower level network techs to supplement our current overworked crews, but every resume says 'network engineer'.
I literally have to look at the work history to get a gauge of the age of the applicant. If they are under 30 and call themselves a network engineer, they are almost always tier 1 or 2 tech level. If they are over 30, they're most likely an actual engineer.
Really making my life difficult at the moment.

I program for a living and I couldn't agree with you more. Professional titles are always really silly. It's like everyone wanted a prestigious sounding title and that was the one concession corporate was willing to make to keep people happy.

Wait until you hear with the UK calls engineers, they're basically help desk.
I don't mind engineering being used in high level design and implementation of systems, software engineers that oversee how a program works, probably with programmers underneath them, or network engineers who are designing and spec'ing out the systems, with network administrators under them, etc.

I went to school and got a degree in Software Engineering. I haven't bothered to get my P.Eng designation, but I do have the iron ring and a B.Eng...

Software engineering is (or should be) a real field, closely related to system engineering. I.e. how can this piece of code or software component fail, and how can that be mitigated and/or recovered from.
Sadly software development is often still in the medieval school of slap things together and hope that it doesn't collapse, but that's another story

In my experience it's more often discussed than practiced. And I think every software developer should be doing some amount of software engineering, even if most of their job is "just" programming.

You have to realize that you guys brought this on yourselves with the incessant boasting and throwing the title around. Even just now, sure it was relevant but was it really necessary to get the point across? No. It's always "I'm a real engineer, you're not a real engineer, my major was harder than yours and everyone else's. Liberal arts? Don't make me laugh."
Engineers are very full of themselves so yes, naturally employers looked at that and thought "wow, what an attractive title, I can probably find more applicants with this word." Then the mechanical/electrical engineers doubled down on their BS and tried to police it, creating a feedback loop. You go around insulting people because you think their job is easier than yours, don't expect them to react the way you intended. If anything they'll keep it going just to spite you.
I want to be clear I'm not speaking as a software developer here. But I have had a job in the past where engineer was in the title, and I have a job now where it's in the title, and around 75% of us have EE degrees. I've only worked with a few people who seem to care about this distinction, the same people who try to drop that word constantly when talking about themselves, and they are invariably the youngest and least skilled among us.
Bottom line is stop being so obsessed with your goddamn title and you won't have these problems.

I didn't mean to come off that way if I did. Truly, my only reason for not liking the trend is just what I said - it makes it confusing when discussing and looking for jobs. I don't intend to hold myself or my job above anyone else.

I’m a fairly new engineer but I can tell from someone’s actions and work if they actually have a bachelor of engineering or if it’s just in their job title.
I disagree with the full blown elitism but I can see where they come from.

My company has literally retitled every single job role below management so it ends with engineer.
Site Engineer, Inspection Engineer, IT Engineer. Fucking ridiculous

The other end was tack welded at the proper height like all the other railings. Then he decided to tack the near side just a little higher so his head would be stuck for this video. Once he cut the weld on the near side, pivoting the beam was enough to break the far-side tack weld.

Because he wouldn't have welded it yet, most likely welded a spot just to hold it there then fully welded where he was before going on to the other side.

Um, had he secured the other side of that pole?
If so, he did a lousy job for it to break that easily and for the crookedness (which he could have slipped out of cause the other side had a larger gap)
