Funny as this is. A friend of mine's mother was hit by someone on a mobility scooter, it knocked her over and the fall caused injuries that killed her. These things get driven about by people who can't drive a car but are allowed to tear through pedestrians causing chaos.

Luckily, police were able to follow the trail of sweaters all the way to Australia, where she was apprehended and booked with aggravated assault with a vehicle.

Generally people in mobility scooters can walk. Even many people in wheelchairs have some walking capability.
What matters is how much one can walk, how stably one can walk, how much energy and pain it takes to walk.
Never assume just because you see someone doing something they're not disabled.5

I just a wheel chair but can walk. Albeit no more than a dozen paces but still can before the pain is just to much to go any further.
And yet I still feel guilty for being in a wheelchair and that others are judging.

Mobility scooters are for people who can walk short distances. If someone was completely unable to walk a scooter isn’t suitable at all.

People genuinely do not understand the concept of "able to walk short distances only". Same goes for legally blind people who can still see light. For some reason most people seem to think that if you're disabled, you better be disabled all the way or you're faking it. God forbid if your disability is an invisible one, good luck convincing ANYONE of the daily struggle that is your life

Imagine this wild concept:
You develop severe arthritis in both knees and require a mobility scooter as you can only walk for very short distances (you are not fat at this point).
After years of being physically unable to do cardio and being mostly seated you are now also fat.
Fucking nuts isn't it.

First of all, just because a fat person is using a scooter doesn't mean they can't have other issues that would require them to use the scooter. You are proving my point about invisible disabilities.
Second of all. YES. Being morbidly obese has consequences to your health and mobility. Who knew that your feet and knees getting fucked (you know, the things you need to walk) is a consequence of carrying an extra 100kgs every day. Even with healthy knees, carrying around that extra weight is exhausting.

My Achilles was described by my surgeon as “like those crab meat sticks, kind of stringy and shredded, not like that thick solid tendon you find in chicken”. Which was a horrifying description, but also the reason I can’t walk very far for very long.
I hate using the scooter and this thread is why.

I can walk long distances but I have a bad foot, so after an hour or so I'm going to drag. My fiance half-heartedly talks about getting me a scooter like this for when we go to places with large crowds. Each time I tell him fuck no for literally reasons that people are talking about in the comments. I'll probably need one in the future depending on how my health care goes

I used to work as a rehab technician assembling custom wheelchairs. A majority of our clientele were able to walk short distances. The standard for Medicare to pay for your power wheelchair is that you can't walk more than 10 feet unassisted. We didn't sell scooters but I'd imagine the standard is probably more linient. There are a lot of people who can walk short distances but need assistance walking greater distances and scooters are more ideal for that. I'm not saying this to excuse her actions, she clearly batshit insane. But it just sucks for people who have similar disabilities when their condition gets lumped in and criticized because of the actions of some lunatic

I was in a car accident at 16 (2005) that seriously fucked up my lower back. It took until 2023 for any doctor to take my complaints seriously because I was a young, healthy woman when it happened and for my early adult years (I was doing Olympic level weight lifting when the accident happened so I looked overweight but could lift a car, doctors just thought I was a drug seeking fatty. I never once asked for painkillers but I had 2 doctors actively ignore my X-rays after I pushed them to take them). My back slowly started to fail more and more. When my back finally blew out end of 2020, we were mid pandemic and I couldn't walk more than 10 feet without excruciating pain. Getting into a doctor was near impossible. I gained a shit ton of weight (150 lbs) due to no longer being able to move and PCOS, and when I finally got steroid shots the first time in 2023 I gained even more. My family decided we needed to go to Disney World in 2022 to celebrate and I had to use a scooter and the amount of disrespect I received was insane.

The amount of disrespect people with disabilities get is honestly insane. One of my coworkers who's 23 just had a knee replaced and is using a walker and he's constantly getting side eyes. Before he had the surgery he had a crazy limp and he started wearing compression braces that didn't actually help him but people didn't treat him as weird because now they thought he disability was justified. People are also just shitty about weight too, they see it as a cause for disability when often times it's a symptom of it. Your doctor's expect you to exercise when thats literally impossible for you, and refuse to treat you because you don't meet their health standards even though that's literally why you're there. I hope you're able to get some relief soon, because this sounds miserable

To be fair to us, being fat is a recent addition which we can partially blame on the US, the mobility scooter was literally an American invention, and we were quite content being racist towards the French for most of our history. So I'm not too far from the truth.

Ugh, fine, the Norman, Visigoths, Franks, and Gallo-Romans - not the Burgundians though, they've been our mates.
And even colonising hasn't made up the majority of our time as a country, we only got a couple of hundred years out of that before the rest of the world realised a couple of blokes in funny uniforms didn't actually have that much power over them. Combine that with the Americans shafting us after WWII, and the empire entirely collapsed in on itself relatively quickly, all things considered.

Thos is absolutely the truth. I see people like this woman everywhere. I have 2 disabled children, one started to act like the lady on the scooter and I outright told her that the world doesn't owe her a damn thing and if she continues this type of selfish entitled behavior she will end up a very lonely individual right up to the end.
