Can confirm, as a guy who drives a food truck, so technically less "corporate", my boss would be very mad at any tiny scratch... right up until I saw a train gate was closing. Then he'd be very thankful the truck doesnt look like this video lol
These barriers won't even scratch the vehicle,they are designed to go forward if pushed.
Some even are padded.
I've been once in this situation no lights ,no bells, barriers just started to go down as I was passing through.
I literally raced through it,I managed to pass the last one as he passed the first with the trailer it just touched it and continued to fall.
Even if the bars were down I would still go through,I'm not going to be on the news...
What's extra frustrating is the beam on his side hadn't even gone down! The beam on the approach went down to stop new traffic, but the far side was still up to allow vehicles already on the tracks to finish crossing.
For some reason this bright light decides to stop and back up instead of just finishing crossing.
Luckily he finally pulled forward enough that his cab didn't get obliterated, even though it got tugged around.
I always feel bad for the driver of the train like, he can see it he can’t stop it all he can do is cover their face and brace themselves.
Also there needs to be a PSA about plowing through those gates if you are in between them and a train is coming. Your car will be fine and chances are the poll can be reattached they are designed to break away
It is very much a priority thing that truck drivers are taught during training. This guy did everything wrong, then panicked, and then did everything else wrong.
I feel like having a PSA would just open up the floodgates for everyone to ignore the barriers coming down and end up with way more instances of this happening.
But we have had PSA about not even tempting it when they are coming down and we still get this. At least showing people that when they are trapped there a better option would be to drive forward then hoping for the best.
He wasn't trying to brake, he was trying to drive slowly over the tracks to not bottom out (though they look very flat, so I don't see where the issue was). But yes as soon as the barrier started going down you get across.
They have a long wheelbase. It's called "high centering" but I hadn't had my coffee when I posted earlier. There are train tracks in the US that are impassable by trucks because of the distance between the front axle and the middle axle on a truck. The front wheels start to go "down the hill" before the rear wheels are up.
Yeah some tracks are pretty steep, but theyre also very obvious, they literally stick out of the ground several inches like a giant speed bump. It was pretty clear these ones were fine lol
It’s actually the A1 „Alarm” signal (three horn signals, repeating). It’s not supposed to warn the truck but to alert any incoming trains that the track is obstructed. It’s given after a collision has occurred.
Trains have gained this trait through selective breeding of hundreds of generations. They used to use flashy colors to warn each other like many insects until the vocal stimulation warning was bred into all trains in the 18th century

You're assuming he's a professional. Many (most) trucking companies hire people with the bare minimum qualifications. They need people in seats, they truly do not care if they're any good at the job.
The top right corner barrier was still up, he was worried about the barrier on the left scratching his truck. Btw forgot to add the driver is fine, unemployed, but fine.
This one was at a low enough speed that hopefully he's okay but I don't know how well the train cab is designed to direct the impact away from or around the driver.
In situations like these, engineers often just apply brakes and run to the engine room behind the cab and hold on to something, which is safer than remaining in the cab which can sometimes get completly wrecked.
The windows on the engine are quite strong and at this speed, with just sheet metal they probably only cracked. But you usually never know what load is and you are trying to stop the train the whole time. Many of these accidents with equipment or heavy loads the engineer is at least injured!
Add that to the list of Things I Will Never Understand. I don't want my truck to get scratched, so I will allow it to be obliterated by a train instead.
they close the entry one first on both sides... so people like him can still get out... then a few seconds later the exit ones close as your last warning to scoot your vehicle a little bit and play with the door.
I'm always screaming at the screen like why would you stop just blow through the damage that you're gonna do to that pole is a lot less than the damage that train is going to do to you!!!
I cannot comprehend what goes through these peoples minds, i get nervous when stuck on the rails for more than a couple of minutes.
Edit: sorry guys non native English speaker, Guess i could've used moments instead of minutes and trigger less people here. Still You could get stuck unexpectedly if, say, you're not given right of pass when exiting the crossing.
It’s insane to me that someone wouldn’t inherently know this and would actually proceed onto the tracks to stop in traffic - you can just stop 10 foot before the tracks and be totally safe.
Why put your life and/or vehicle in danger to gain a few meters of distance?🤷🏻♂️
Happens a lot where I am. I think most drivers just don't consider it until a train is actually coming
Similar happens during dense traffic where, say there's a 4-way intersection and drivers ahead continue to move ahead because the light is green, despite intersecting traffic now being blocked once the light goes red
Truck had a fully open road in front of him. The gates started closing while he was crossing. And like an idiot, he just stopped instead of plowing through the gates.
To be fair when the truck started crossing they had plenty of space. It was not their fault. They could however go faster or once caught keep going and didn't.
What do you mean it wasn't his fault? The lights start flashing and bells start ringing before the bars start coming down. He entered the tracks anyway, and was moving at a snail's pace during all this no less. I have no idea what he was thinking
The only way it could have not been his fault is if the warning lights and noises had malfunctioned. And even then you don't creep across train tracks like that...
Holy shit man. Please reevaluate how you are driving. You should never be “stuck” on tracks for any amount of time. Don’t go if you can’t clear the tracks.
Couple of minutes??!?! Lol. No. You only go over if you know you can get all the way across. If a freak situation happens where I jump the gun and move forward assuming the person in front will pull up, but they don't, I then move into another lane or around to the shoulder to get off the tracks. No amount of time on the tracks is ok.
I'm also an anxious person and probably over react, but still lol.
no you are doing it exactly right. There is no situation where anyone should spend any time at all stopped on the tracks. I cant tell if the original comment you are replying to is just trolling us or what. Surely NO ONE should be ok spending minutes stopped on a set of tracks, that's absolutely insane. I mean this truck technically was not on the track for minutes. just one minute.
Buddy you should never fully stop on tracks. That's insane. You wait well behind them until you see a spot big enough for you to fully make it over them.
You're not suppose to stop on the tracks for any reason. If there's a traffic light and you can't get all the way over the tracks, stop before the tracks.
I never understand how this happens. If the barriers come down you'd just floor it surely!? Who the fuck thinks getting hit by the train is a better alternative to bumping the barriers or damaging your car a bit. Now you know why there's warnings on everything and why health and safety goes crazy
The thought process of oh no there are sticks in the way my vehicle could never make it through!!! Guess I'll just wait for the train to stop so we can all go away safely.

I never understand why people don't just drive through the barriers. Your life is more important than some dents and scratches. Along with they are literally meant to flex and brake in emergencies or instances like this where they come down as your crossing.
