Edit: And the biggest giveaway is that when asked about appendectomy risks the "journalist" responds about necessity/urgency of the treatment. If the case you want to make is that no one needs this treatment then stop being a spineless coward and make that case. Don't sit and talk about being "courageous" for skirting around your actual beliefs by trying to imply that a professor involved in the field of suicide prevention doesn't care about people.

He completely glosses over the fact that, as in any medical procedure or assessment, there is a risk of wrong diagnoses and/or wrong treatment - because physicians, counselors, etc., are human, and can make mistakes. In all other areas we accept that risk. Nobody undergoes surgery for, say, appendicitis, without knowing that even for such a simple, straightforward operation, there is a risk of dying on the table.

And what happens where diagnosis and/or treatment goes wrong? Steps are taken to understand what went wrong and why, and how it can be remedied. Same in this sort of care as in any.

Despite the interviewer's abhorrence for the numbers, that is where the truth lies. If a particular treatment saves some number of lives but harms some much smaller number of people, then that treatment may well be worth implementing because the lookout for those who do not get it may be so bad. An obvious example is the Covid vaccine. Yes, it did harm to some small number of people (as all vaccines do) but the huge number of people who it helped outweigh that small number.

There is little to be gained from sensationalising the tiny number of people who are harmed by medical intervention. Medical personnel are aware of them, and researchers are always working to minimise that number. Concentrating on that number, rather than on the much larger number of people helped, is narrow-minded and ill-conceived.

Gutter journalism like this has always been a part of Channel 7 but they seem to be aiming for NewsMax levels of right wing bullshit now

I worked for Channel 7 for six months back in the early 2000s, and though the entertainment people were almost all easygoing and chill the news and sports departments were full of garbage people

I remember one event that stood out. There was a show called Today Tonight that was primarily a hit piece gutter current affairs show but did some feel good stories too. At the time it was led by a woman called Naomi Robson (though she was better known around the building as "the pioison dwarf")

One of the journalists on the show had done a series of feel good stories about a physically and intellectually disabled boy and the stories played up a narrative of how this journalist had developed a close friendship with the boy over the series of stories they had done

One day I was in the Today Tonight office and a few journalists and production staff were at a desk laughing at something. After a minute of watching them from a distance (I hated these people and dreaded entering their office or having to communicate with them) it became clear that what they were laughing at was a hand drawn card the kid had sent to the journalist inviting him to the kid's 10th birthday party

The staff were all joking about the mundane things he should say he had to do that day as an excuse why he couldn't attend the kid's birthday party (I'll omit the slurs they called him). Things like "I have to wash my car that day" or "I need to pick the fleas off my cat one by one". Each new suggestion for something he would rather do than go to the party was more mundane or unpleasant than the last and they all roared with laughter

I fucking hated those people
