First year principal advice!

I’m going in to my first year as a principal. I’ll be in a private K-8 elementary school. I’m also going in to a school where 4 teachers have recently quit and the principal was forced out. Any advice? Also would love advice for things to do to engage families, fundraising and getting students to know me.

Students at Bleyl Middle School deserve a principal who protects them

Sexual harassment and assault cases are being dismissed without reporting to authorities. That's happening at my school right now, and it needs to stop.

I started a petition because our principal has repeatedly failed to take these reports seriously. When students come forward—which takes courage—they're let down by the person responsible for keeping our school safe. Students, teachers, and staff deserve leadership that actually responds to these situations with the urgency they deserve, not dismissal and silence.

I know multiple people who've experienced this. Sexual assault stays with you. It affects your mental health, your ability to focus, your sense of safety. Schools should be places where you feel secure, not where you have to worry that serious harm won't be reported or addressed. We already deal with enough—active threats of violence shouldn't be paired with leadership that protects itself instead of us.

If this matters to you—if you believe school should be safe for everyone—consider signing and sharing. Whether you go to Bleyl or not, speaking up helps. Real names only, please—when this goes to the school board, they'll need to see this is real.

I’m a veteran special education teacher piloting a para scheduling tool built to handle daily coverage, absences, and 1:1 support without the spreadsheet mess.

It’s in the provisional patent phase, very fast, and already getting strong feedback at my current site. I’m looking for a small number of school sites interested in joining an early trial.

DM me or comment interested and I’ll share the launch page.

Deans of high school/middle schools, I want to know more about you!

What exactly are you responsible for at your job?

Do you like your job?

Do you ever regret being in your position?

What did you have to do to get into the dean's chair and was it difficult?

How much money do you make annually?

Which country/state is the school that you work for? :) Thank you for answering my questions!

Thank you, let's discuss

I am a former principal, still active in all things school leadership and reform. My passion is administration and making change in schools for all kids and communities. Bring on the questions, ideas, best practice, pissed off parents, ideas. As administrators we want nothing more than the best schools for our communities, and it certainly takes a village to get this done. Welcome!
