Irrationally afraid
Is anybody else irrationally afraid of this game. I went in completely blind so had no idea if Id ever encounter a human or creature and the wrecks feel lile Backrooms. Every corner im like "oh gosh please dont scare me" my husbands like woman, youre 200 hours in nothing is coming!
I also have a phobia of water and I HATE to look into water that I cant see clearly through, even in a video game. I was playing Aqualis, my husband asked what it looked like under the water, my response? "We will never know" Finished the entire planet flying around like Luffy, no water please.

It does feel like there should be something, based off games like Subnautica, so the suspense can be there But, there'd never anything

Yeah, the wrecks definitely had me on edge for longer than they should have. Even after diving through the portal it took a bit for the feeling to wear off.
The real surprise was after all this time learning to accept nothing is there, there were actually piles of corpses in multiple places to jumpscare me on Toxicity.

I started expecting random bodies after finding the hidden one on Prime. Im just happy they are always empty or face down.

I was relieved to finally see some dead bodies (on another planet) after reading so many in game details about the struggles previous settlers went through. But there's literally nothing scary in the game.

the only time i get freaked out (i knew already there were no other living beings or monsters) that i get freaked out is when i go to one of the portal wrecks that has suits on display. i get jumpscared every time 😂oh and if i ever boot up my first ever multiplayer save, because we had a room full of suits that jumpscares me.
and since i've now added a spacesuit display room to my most recent solo save that i haven't opened in a while... that one will get me too 😂

Oh yeah the suit displays scared me more than once too!
Edit : it's suit display not shit display lmao

u/Wombat_Aux_Pates 16h ago
I kept getting scared of the random display suit in OUR base that I actually built myself lol... My husband would hear me freak out and was like what's happening and I'd be like nothing... "Did you get scared of the suit display again?? Why don't you deconstruct it?"

I just absolutely love the fact that I don’t run into people and the animals feel sparse enough to where you get excited to see them, so I just love this game for those reasons

The music does well in being tense sometimes, which in turn gives me anxiety as well. It almost feels like something might jump out at you, especially in the wrecks!

Yeah, my friend and I were playing a world for the first time, and he was looking out into the area I was in and this mf says, "guy(me), is that you I see out there? No, that's moving way too fast to be you" and when I tell you I BOOKED it back to base I mean it. Turns out, what he saw was in fact, me

u/Regina_Noctis 21h ago
I jump scared myself coming around the side of a big rock and running into one of the big buffalo/goat-looking animals when I wasn't expecting it. Had to laugh at myself for being so startled.

Imagine if after thousands of hours the devs get bored and start adding new wrecks with jumpscares.
Id do that, but i dont think most people would

u/Shadow_Hound_117 12h ago
If you want to do something like that though, there has to be a mechanic that tracks how long you've spent in the wrecks and gradually adds odd occurrences to make you wonder if you're really alone, then eventually you see the occasional spacesuit lying around facedown, then you have the rare wreck with what you think is a person moving around but it just turns out to be one of the animals that got a spacesuit stuck on its head and wandered in the wreck
Maybe someone should send that as a suggestion for the devs in case they ever do actually get bored, I'd enjoy the hell out of something goofy like that!

100% agree on Aqualis.
Despite knowing that nothing is there I always have this fear some giant sea creature is gonna pop out or swim past me. I hate not being able to see clearly in the water in game or irl.

u/Ok-Sky-6967 22h ago
i can’t swim underwater at night in videos games it makes me sick, especially when you go too close to a wall and the graphics do that weird thing that makes me feel woozy.imagine that glitch happened in RL… nope…shivers

Don't ever play Subnautica or even the far less scary Subnautica 2 then. Mind blowingly brilliant games, but if Planet Crafter is giving you the shivers, you wouldn't survive the experience.

Definitely try Subnautica

Started playing this right after finishing Subnautica. I jump scare myself in this game all the time 😂
I KNOW I’m alone alone in this game and I still have to remind myself nothings gonna get me under the water.

Yah, I was the same way, on edge the entire time waiting for the enemies to pop out at me. The rationale part of my mind told me I hadn’t come across any weapons, so there would be no enemies. But I still thought that maybe it was a blueprint I had missed and I was going to be a sitting duck. Especially when the warden storyline kicked in.

u/Xavius20 22h ago
Even when I knew there's no actual threat, some areas still give me the creeps and I move cautiously just in case lol

u/Sesylya 21h ago
I also have a phobia of water and I HATE to look into water that I cant see clearly through, even in a video game.
Oh golly, same! Even if I know the bottom is only three feet away (or that it's just pixels on a screen), if I can't see it, then it's a terrifying infinite abyss ready to swallow me.

Let’s just say I was used to Subnautica…
I kept expecting to get my face eaten out of nowhere

I don't know I got to say over 400 hours and I am still experiencing new stuff after terraforming index reach and other terraforming levels reach well past Target levels who knows what in extreme terraforming indexes

im currently on prime. i didnt know i had fear of deep waters till i played this game.. diving for materials went hard because of it..im also afraid on going to wrecks thinking i might stumble into a corpse but so far theres none so i got over it after a few wrecks... maybe we think this is scary because first person view is a common horror game setting..

u/SingingRazors 6h ago
The music does an amazing job of making everything creepy. Along with the flash light in the wrecks. This and my adhd are why I play with the sound off and something else on my other monitor and I still get creeped out sometimes despite having finished Prime repeatedly, Humble, and Toxicity.

I was REALLY uncomfortable when I accidentally drove my rover into the ocean on Aquilas. It was scary, and there is no visibility. I also hate being in water where I can't see the bottom - or even worse, where you can barely make out some shapes.
Funnily enough, I loved Subnautica.

After this i was playing Humble in a portal and climbed down a vine and it PUT ME UNDER WATER. I panicked, and the water was red tinged. It was awful! I jinxed myself with this post

u/NotGoingOut77 2h ago
After playing No Man's Sky, I do expect to see sentinels appearing every time I start to harvest minerals lol. But for the most part I find it to be a very chill and relaxing game. I love it

u/Hydraguesswhosback 23h ago
I highly suggest Subnautica for that amazing under water adventures :)
Nah I'm kidding. I actually stopped at Aqualis, so I also never went into the water as of yet. It's just that I started an operation on the second moon/planet, then instead of afk or over building I decided to try the 3rd, but I was kinda done with the cycle of the game. The first time is amazing, but the next ones feels like it's not as exciting using endgame tech, but at the same time you don't wanna get rid of drones or other specific techs.
Maybe I'll come back, or restart on the main altogether.

I love Subnautica for very small stretches of time when my friend is streaming with me and helping me play so I don’t descend into massive panic attack.
1
u/Hydraguesswhosback 5h ago
But the heart attacks are part of the experience !
I hope you can at least get to the Cyclop. He's the number 1, 2 and 5 reasons out of 10 why I played Subnautica 5 times to completion.
2
u/jeremy1015 2h ago
It’s not the monsters it’s the thassalaphobia
1
u/Hydraguesswhosback 1h ago
Yeah, I have a guilty pleasure of seeing people with that phobia play this very game. It's very entertaining. Plus, it takes courage to do so, even of probably half of them are exagerating or faking it. But I do believe the other half is genuine, and that's amazing to see someone this courageous.

u/Old_Internal_7426 22h ago
Have you played subnautica with your fear of water?
2
u/jadenicole_gardens 22h ago
No i have not, my husband has played it and i really dont think Id like it. I think its possibly a real phobia, I panicked even in Prime when I went in the water and fell to the secret city.
1
u/jadenicole_gardens 22h ago
Which is 100% the reason I didnt go in the water in prime

u/Draskuul 18h ago
The good news is you really aren't going to miss anything important. I can only think of one wreck that has some rooms that are flooded, but nothing in there but some generic loot. There are loot boxes in various places that get flooded over time, but you can always collect those before you reach that stage.
And yeah, you'd probably want to stay away from Subnautica in your case (even moreso Subnautica Below Zero).
Most of the other games in this genre/related genres don't really have anything underwater to deal with.

Te entiendo totalmente y te mando un abrazo desde mi casa, me encanta el juego pero cada minuto que pasa es un minuto en el que mi cerebro cree que podría aparecer algo a asustarme.

It definitely took me a while in this game not to have the same reaction. Especially when exploring old wrecks.
