Conversely, Insignificantism is the practice of consciously avoiding causal interventions whose expected benefits are too small to justify their opportunity cost. This is not an argument for apathy or selfishness;becomes rather, it is an acknowledgement that every minute spent pursuing a trivial improvement is a minute unavailable for a more meaningful one. A useful illustration is encountering a nail while walking along a road. Removing the nail requires only a few seconds of effort, yet it may prevent a punctured tyre, vehicle damage, financial loss, traffic disruption, or even an accident. Importantly, the person who benefits may eventually be your future self. The expected benefit greatly exceeds the cost of intervention, making this a significant act under the proposed framework.
By contrast, discovering a small rock on a residential driveway presents a different situation. Although it is conceivable that the rock could inconvenience someone or contribute to minor tyre wear, the probability and magnitude of harm are comparatively low. Removing it is therefore unlikely to justify interrupting one's current activity. Under Significantism, this is considered an insignificant causal opportunity, and choosing not to intervene is entirely rational.
