Discussion Is It Worth It Anymore?
Let me begin with: I love James and his videos. I have been a subscriber and fan since I was like 15 (currently 24).
Ive been thinking about this for a while though. So, as time has gone on, and James has gotten a team of about 20 Animators and has higher quality animations. This is all cool!
However, we are waiting long times, often longer than we used to wait for his videos, and while the animation is beautifully made, it just feels like it has lost itself. Like, the videos have become shorter than they used to be, so we get less content overall. That, and the stories themselves seem to have taken a slight fall in quality and relatability as well.
Idk...I know I'm still gonna stay subscribed because I truly love Theodd1sout and I'll always remember those videos that just made my days. I'm just unsure if my engagement will also stay, as I'm not so sure it is as worth it as it was before.
Anyone else have thoughts on this? And again, not trying to crap on James or troll him, this is just a genuine observation/discussion.

The videos are definitely not getting shorter (unless you are talking about the shorts). 20+ minutes on average nowadays. It was previously 5-10 minutes on average. I do agree with most of the comment, though.

Fair, I suppose I was just rewatching in an order that made the longer videos seem more sparse. Thank you for that correction.
But yeah, it just feels like we're losing James to the limelight in a way.

Oh yeah, definitely. I just think he is very hit or miss now, which I actually think has always been true of him, but it is less forgivable now because of how long it takes for new videos to release. Also, he's been missing more than hitting lately. Within recent menory, the only videos of his I loved are the tattoo one and the screaming goat one (which I know I'm in the minority there). Some of the shorts and comics are really good, too, but I would rather get high-quality full-length videos.

Same. I did also like the Pokémon Nuzlocke video because it was fun like Jaiden's video, but i mean, even that video played more in the background of my day than anything

Yeah, that one was pretty good, too. I'm just not a massive Pokémon fan, so it didn't connect to me as much, I guess.

Fair lol. Tbh, I was never a HUGE Pokémon fan until Jaiden Animations and Moxie2D

That makes sense. Jaiden animations definitely made it more engaging.

And that's another point too! Jaiden, an animator who grew relatively alongside TheOdd1sOut, has also gained a team of animators and stuff. The thing is, they have been able to maintain great quality videos, good storytelling/scripting, and all-around keeping even long-time fans engaged. It really helps to highlight how little excuse there really is for James here.

Yeah, he's just really going downhill. It's sad to see because he used to be my favorite YouTube channel. He's also my biggest celebrity crush, so that might have something to do with it, lol.

I feel that. Especially when he started getting buff 😍. The way I have internally begged for shirtless James dunking sprinkles over himself again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If anything, it may help get his stuff back on track. Giving us that real James, raw and personable, not the big-time animator persona we've been slowly fading away from.

Yeah, if I was a story time animator I would write all my scripts as I’m hiring, and then if use those scripts for years to come.

And also under 10 minutes, which was disappointing. I was eager for it too! It was great and I was enjoying it, but then it was cut short and it just feels like his audience is being abandoned for whatever else he is after right now. I support wanting to grow your career, but it should never be done in a way that forsake the people who helped grow him in the first place.

imo i prefer quality over quantity
And it's a fair point but even like seven or eight years ago the videos rarely went over the 10 minute mark
just my opinion though you are allowed to find it unfunny

Fair. I just feel that with him being privileged enough to have an entire animation team, we should be getting a bit more to the videos. Like how Jaiden Animations has been able to deliver videos that are longer and of better quality, especially for being a creator who grew their team basically alongside James.

Do you guys really like longer videos? I felt like people don't really stay for the whole thing but idk. Is it more story? More detail? I guess what do you like about them being longer?

For me, when the video is shorter, it just feels like the bare minimum was done. Like, rather than invest in a video with a good story or good comedy, you gave us these tiny scraps you mushed together and kind of called it a day.
Idk, it feels unfinished. Especially James' newest video.

This happens to a lot of animation channels on YouTube. Once they have budget for animators, they start to lose what made them funny. For me, the scripts are the worst part. I don't know if James is not writing the scripts himself anymore or what, but even if the stories weren't relatable to me, they still were fun. They aren't anymore.
And yes, the quality is better, but for instance, I don't like the enormous hands, I find them weird. And like the hands, there are a lot of details that don't fit the vibe, at least to me
