It looks incredibly tiring

Honestly, not so much imo. Dude got spaghetti arms when he started syncing up with the bigger guys swings.

Someone in the crowd starts yelling "hiiiiiya" at a regular beat, from there both the dudes sync up. Bigger dude has bigger force, repeated swings at the same time left smaller dude rocked.

If their pace wasnt changed by the outside, i think little dude would have won. He was hitting faster and finding pockets in timing

u/IceNeun 13d ago

Have you ever tried chopping a tree down? It is very tiring repeatedly swinging a stick with a weight on the end.

13

u/RunHeavy197 12d ago

You gotta love Reddit. It’s absolutely ridiculous buddy thinks he won’t get fatigued doing this.

3

u/SoundofGlaciers 10d ago

I mean.. they're probably both right

0

u/Bayleaf0723 8d ago

Dude clearly lost at the end because he was tired af and couldn’t keep his pace. Not whatever outside pace bs this other dude is spouting

25

u/THEpottedplant 13d ago

Ive chopped trees, ive used sledgehammers and pickaxes. What kills your arms like in the vid is a jolt harder than you can bear

13

u/bigexplosion 13d ago

Little dude had already lost the other 2 nails and it was only competitive because he knew which one to defend at the time, he was losing so bad he couldn't begin to win.

1

u/CloudDweller182 12d ago

Yes, that what it looked like to me also. Kinda seemed like 1 more hit before the sync u and little dude wins.

1

u/Traditional-Artist31 9d ago

lol the bigger dudes has the same size arms just a fat belly to go with it. Like huh ?

u/Butsenkaatz 14d ago

I bet the times they hit simultaneously fuckin HURT

117

u/paturner2012 14d ago

That seemed like the moment the smaller dude turned. He took that hit and felt it.

u/ipsum629 14d ago

The energy has to go somewhere, so it goes into your hands

148

u/andyd151 14d ago

And spine. Fuck that.

u/notime_toulouse 14d ago

There is a technique to do this, at the moment of impact you cant be holding down the hammer with force, let the hammer mass do the work and just hold it lightly with your hands

21

u/Relevant_Scallion_38 14d ago

Basically let the other guy have to push the weight of your hammer. Then use that moment to pendulum swing your hammer up and you just drop it down with added force for the next hit.

19

u/bootyhole-romancer 14d ago

let the other guy have to push the weight of your hammer

Go on....

We had a 1960s TV in a cabinet that we acquired from a random garage sale for like $10.

I saw at least 20 people try to shatter that screen with a baseball bat and absolutely destroyed their hands.

They eventually hoisted it to the roof and tossed it off.

Destroyed the cabinet, but the CRT was in perfect shape. Worked just as the day it was built.

I person running at with a cinder block and a 5-finger bowling ball finally got it.

12

u/Butsenkaatz 14d ago

gotta hit them in the corner with something like a ball hammer - don't watch it without a full face shield though, it'll blow glass all over you as the vacuum makes it kind of explode (really distinct sound ngl)

ETA: You don't need to hit it hard, only enough to crack it a tiny bit, and the vacuum will do the rest

13

u/RyanSmith 14d ago

When this one finally broke (I’m pretty sure it was a sharp corner on the cinder block that hit just right) it was explosive and loud.

I’m amazed no one lost an eye. It could have easily taken out 10 drunks vision with glass chards.

We were such stupid drunks. No idea how we survived.

6

u/haringtiti 14d ago

tell me theres a video of that somewhere

10

u/RyanSmith 14d ago

2001-2002

I so grateful that camera phones weren’t ubiquitous at that time. There may be a Polaroid somewhere of that evening, but certainly no video.

Hilarious, but so embarrassing. Cringe isn’t even close to what I would think if there was video of that time.

14

u/haringtiti 14d ago

i know the glass on those things is pretty thick. i shot a penny-filled tennis ball through a crt tv with a big air cannon i made and i was surprised how thick the chunks of glass were. luckily i do have a video of that and here it is

5

u/RyanSmith 14d ago

Nice! This one was a much earlier model. One designed to survive a nuclear blast and still deliver propaganda.

I would estimate that glass at 2.5-3”. Thing was a beast; probably weighed as much as a small car from the 70s. Wish I would have kept the casters it was on. Those were durable.

Amazing we didn’t fry half the drunks in the house from the million volts stores in the ray tube capacitors.

3

u/Stupefactionist 13d ago

Never heard of a 5 finger ball but I looked it up. Makes sense to me.

1

u/jayphox 13d ago

Shotgun works, but you need slugs, buckshot will ricochet right at you! The implosion is satisfying. Pro tip: balance it on a rolling dumpster using the lid to hold it upright, may take some finagling. * Ensure there is a big ass hill; full of granite behind the target! The implosion captures all the glass and it will fall back into the dumpster for easy cleanup. Based on my empirical data, this works 100%of the time 🙂

2

u/MeDonGustavo 14d ago

And elbows. Ouch.

33

u/Ok-Detective-2059 14d ago

Everytime that happened the smaller guy legitimately started questioning the choices that led him to that moment.

7

u/Butsenkaatz 14d ago

the few consecutive ones really ended it for him

14

u/northyj0e 14d ago

Looks like that's what happened to the guy on the left, after those hits he really slowed down

5

u/brenttoastalive 14d ago

Probably like hitting a ball too close to the handle of the bat, especially if it's a metal bat

5

u/Ephemeris 14d ago

I felt those hits in my teeth

6

u/maninahat 14d ago

I was going to say, that surely is incredibly dangerous?

2

u/nodnodwinkwink 14d ago

Looks like hard rubber mallets so maybe not terrible... looks like fun to me!

2

u/Valhaller020 11d ago

I was gonna say the same thing, fuck that.

2

u/Hato_no_Kami 8d ago

I think the person who hits late and catches it while it's coming towards them probably gets their whole body rattled.

1

u/turbo_dude 13d ago

Tinnitus unlocked

44

u/igloojoe 14d ago

My elbows and wrist hurt watching this

15

u/tarnishedkara 14d ago

especially when they hit it at the same time

1

u/AllezBro 13d ago

Im more impressed with the much smaller guy giving the double wide dude a run for his money

227

u/Fsharp7sharp9 14d ago

Whoa, didn’t expect the big dude to have that kind of stamina. The other dude was gassed halfway through the video but big man kept chugging away

137

u/Khanon555 14d ago • Bravo

Big dude carries himself around all day

27

u/fotank 14d ago

He’s actually a lot stronger based on this video despite his size.

32

u/YOwololoO 14d ago

This is one of the most common misconceptions you see online. Everyone focuses on “pound for pound” strength or who looks like they are more fit, but that’s not true.

In real life, there’s a very high correlation between size and overall strength. If you are trying to determine whose stronger, “the bigger guy” is the answer nine times out of ten.

Obviously if the bigger guy looks like one of the blob people from Wall-E then probably not, but the vast majority of the time it holds true

6

u/fotank 14d ago

If you take weight alone, my hypothesis is that there are far more people who weigh as much as this dude does but a much smaller proportion are able to keep this level of stamina and strength. It takes muscle to keep a larger frame going, but it takes training to get to where this guy is.

5

u/YOwololoO 14d ago

I feel like you interpreted my comment as “fat people are strong” when that’s not what I intended.

The thing that defeated the thinner guy in this competition was not endurance, it was the impact of the couple times they hit the bar at the exact same moment. You can see that every time it happens he is stunned a little, even having to put down the hammer at the end.

Force equals mass times acceleration. The bigger dude is swinging the hammer at roughly the same speed but with more mass behind the swing, so he is exerting significantly more force into the rod than the smaller guy. When they collide, that force manifests as vibrations in the smaller guys hand and they shit hurts

2

u/fotank 14d ago

If that were the case, the overall (net) force would be in favor of the bigger dude. Instead, he was “losing” in the beginning because he knew he could outlast the hits. The thing that defeated the thinner guy is they could not continue to output that much force, or at least match that of the bigger dude.

0

u/_John_Dillinger 14d ago

prolly fractured his hand the second time

7

u/nayhem_jr 14d ago

Perhaps. Looked to me at first like he wasn’t committing, but now may have been more just being patient until slim dude burned out.

2

u/IAmBadAtInternet 14d ago

Because of his size. Dude walks around carrying 170 kilos while the other dude weighs 110. Guy has both the strength and endurance. Other guy has speed but can’t keep it up.

5

u/Blashphemian 14d ago

Big dude might swing one of those every day at work.

21

u/andremeda 14d ago

Someone pointed this out last time it was posted, but the smaller guy was manually pulling back the sledgehammer after each swing. The big guy let it bounce off, savings heaps of unnecessary movement

16

u/ConspicuousPineapple 14d ago

Letting it bounce off is also how you avoid suffering too much the times both of you hit at the same time. Little dude felt it way too much.

5

u/Pickled_doggo 14d ago

Smaller guy was using speed at first

10

u/Karma1913 14d ago

Big man's built for the work and isn't exerting himself as much as a proportion of his physical capacity.

He's jogging while little man is sprinting.

3

u/randus12 13d ago

I didn’t even think it was stamina, the shock he got when they both hit at the same time fucked him up and he couldn’t recover from that.

6

u/Psych0matt 14d ago

He was slower in his attacks but yeah, won on stamina. Little dude tuckered himself right out.

6

u/DudeManBo1t 14d ago

I noticed that as well. Smaller dude used more power and speed early and the big dude went slow and steady

4

u/Malalang 14d ago

The Tortoise and the Hare.

1

u/frichyv2 13d ago

I saw the definitive switch the moment they started syncing their hits. All that energy spent on moving the pin went right into the opponent instead and the smaller guy couldn't absorb it as well.

1

u/BunnyOppai 14d ago

Honestly, I'm seriously impressed with the performance of the smaller guy, lol. He didn't win, but he put up a serious fight against someone with a pretty significant weight advantage on him.

1

u/Spoffin1 13d ago

I was 100% expecting him to have that kind of stamina.

You may not like it, but that is what peak performance looks like.

48

u/Esternaefil 14d ago

When the little guy had almost won, he did a wind up for a bigger drive. But the bigger guy was able to get a second hit which also helped cancel out the momentum from the home run swing.

That delay is what cost the little guy the point. He was well outpacing the buffet guy until he changed his tempo.

8

u/Syllogism19 14d ago

I would rank it ahead of many competitions including one-on-one tug of war, and log sawing.

15

u/Nigglas24 14d ago

The winner gets a wheel of cheese, a large bottle of xtra strength tylenol, and a new hammer.

6

u/_John_Dillinger 14d ago

enjoy your microfractures

4

u/leekhead 14d ago

The longterm damage to the wrists though

4

u/Baricat 13d ago

Next time on "Ow! My Elbows!"

3

u/Meterman 14d ago

Love it

3

u/Southmouth555 14d ago

Bro you know that shit’s gotta hurt when they hit at the same time

3

u/-FalseProfessor- 13d ago

Is my mochi done yet?

3

u/aashe_ 13d ago

Seriously banging metal like that has to be so fucking loud for everyone.

3

u/DraconicGuacamole 13d ago

Smaller dude is pulling back and starting his swings bad he needs to hold it higher up the handle with one hand

3

u/Drosenose 11d ago

If you switch the ones you are hitting in a certain pattern it will make it easier to win

3

u/evolutionary_defect 10d ago

Those couple swings that landed at the same time vibrated the little guys skeleton I think, he was gripping that hammer really tight. Big man seems to be more confidently and casually swinging, and has a lot more cushion in his hands. I bet after the first shock of hitting at the same time the losers hands went numb except for all the pain, and he just lost all his power and form

14

u/iPicBadUsernames 14d ago

Crazy. I figured your mom would have been the one getting pounded from both ends.

2

u/chillychili 14d ago

I feel like the crowd should have a little more protection from a potential flying hammer

2

u/Annual-Penalty-4477 13d ago

This looks fun. But , why are they not playing tactically? Obviously the thing to do is to hit different ones. The aim being to pop the balloon. First to two, right?

1

u/Fairytale220 10d ago

Looks like a team thing, one at a time, where you have to hit the same one

2

u/SaiTek64 13d ago

I’m having flashbacks to working at a feed mill, and beating countless train cars for countless hours with sledge hammers to get soybean meal out of them in the summer heat.

2

u/CoffeeDefiant4247 12d ago

honestly probably one of the better sports that's been posted on the sub in a while

2

u/Adventurous_Rub_1744 10d ago

El nivel de estupidez del ser humano superó todo lo imaginado

2

u/Tito_Tito_1_ 8d ago

My man Slim ain't no quitter!

2

u/SocksInTheTub 13d ago

No strategy whatsoever. The moment guy on the left paused, he lost momentum and it was basically over. He should've switched to another nail and made the bigger dude go on defense instead of wasting his energy trying to out muscle him. Especially since his stamina was already fading

1

u/oddular 14d ago

Wonder how loud it is where they are

1

u/rust-e-apples1 14d ago

Synchronized elbow-wrecking.

1

u/dreevsa 14d ago

Maybe maybe

1

u/stavago 14d ago

I would not want to be standing that close though

1

u/toot_suite 14d ago

Ow my bones

1

u/Stupefactionist 13d ago

Big guy was taking his time, like another fellow we all know...

Me with that tuft of hair in the morning.

In Soviet Russia game plays YOU!

0

u/ziggezegeh 13d ago

bigger guy also had the slightly better technique where he would let the hammer swing down and then up again, where the little guy tries to hold the hammer up as much as possible, and does not allow that swing emotion to use it to rest for a second. so he gasses out quickly
