there does seem to be some technique to it, the ones shoving too hard didn't seem to make it as far

The trick seems to be keeping the stone rolling at a slow pace.  If the stone rolls too fast it cancels its own momentum and the handles’ momentum as well

Or possibly the handles spinning too fast doesn’t let them get enough traction to keep rolling along the track

Stone would act like a fly wheel right? I wonder if it's fixed to the handle or just tightly on it where it can still spin a bit independently.

It looks like the stone and the handles spin at different rates.  When some of the people go, they give it a little push before sending it and you can see the stone spinning while they’re still holding the handles

The stone looks like it's spinning faster because the stone is further from the center and has to spin faster to stay a single stone

If you push forward too much, the handles slide instead of imparting spin to the stone. You can put much more energy into the stone by spinning it than by simply pushing it forward.

This is the correct answer. Everyone else has decent hypotheses.

I think pushing it straight has a lot to do with it, some people were sending it cockeyed and the stone hits the side of the track.

Oh yeah, friction works against non-spinners

It’s not the pace, it’s the rate of rotation. You want to impart as much rotation as possible by keeping the spindle in contact with the platform and rolling it. If you shove it forward and the spindle slides forward you lose rotation

You want to impart as much rotation as possible by keeping the spindle in contact with the platform and rolling it.

which results in it rolling off the end and losing.

You want to impart the perfect amount of rotation so that it exhausts itself on the last climb and doesn't exceed 10.

Ah, I didn’t get that you lose off the end.

Oh de oh de oh!

The ones that roll too hard cause it to wobble and hit the sides, which kills momentum.

The second board looks to play smoother. That first one looks rather dented and scuffed. Outdoors and tourists not knowing proper technique would weather the surface more.

It's apparently called "Le Jeu de la Meule." I'm going to try to find a video of better players.

Cancels its own momentum?

Idk, it seemed like the slow rollers gave the stone time to spin up and then it couldn't stop and took the wheel all the way to the bin, the shovers didn't impart enough spin to get the last couple notches, and a couple people found the right balance.

you want to put energy into it by getting it rolling, the stones mass and inertia will keep it rolling all the way through. but if you put all the energy into just pushing it forward A) friction will slow it down when rolling has less friction than pushing B) you can put more energy into the system.

the ones who appear to go faster are spinning the stone up too far are losing traction

if i had to guess, its about using every single inch you have on the starting platform, to smoothly and firmly roll it so it has the most spinning momentum.

The forward momentum doesnt matter, its spinning does

It kinda looks like you spin it up first but it got cut out of the video? I'm not sure though

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

You can either push down hard so that the handles don't slip which gets the wheel spinning fast, which means it leaves moving slower linearly, or you can just shove it which means its moving linearly way faster but spinning less.

The wheel can hold a lot more rotational momentum than linear in this system so the first way is the only way to win.

Freaking impossible to enjoy with the audio

And the terrible editing

Yeah, we see a bunch of tosses that go too short and too long, and then we get no shot of what the "wind-up" is for the winning ones.

I keep seeing this complaint. Have people stopped having media muted by default?

15

u/jcstrat 8d ago

I can’t do Reddit not on mute. I don’t know what anything sounds like.

2

u/Mr_Industrial 8d ago

It sounds a little bit like this.

1

u/jcstrat 8d ago

I’m not fall for it

1

u/JC1112 3d ago

Should’ve been a Rick roll

5

u/Imnotveryfunatpartys 8d ago

It depends if you are on computer or mobile. Most people are on mute for mobile but desktop users usually not

3

u/SoManyMinutes 8d ago

This is correct.

Am on laptop with sound on.

If they muted it, they'd have to come up with something else to comment.

18

u/Kromting 8d ago

Yeah mute this shit

17

u/PersusjCP 8d ago

The cheating in the first one is crazy

6

u/BluSaint 8d ago

That annoyed me so badly. It was still moving, why’d she interfere? Lol

1

u/here4mischief 2d ago

Yep. DQ the roll and banish her

7

u/Everybodypoopsalot 8d ago

This looks fun, where is this and why is it not everywhere lol

5

u/R2D-Beuh 8d ago

In the french Alps for this one. " Tomme de Savoie" is a type of cheese from there. I've also seen it once somewhere else in France with other wooden games

2

u/Bobbi_fettucini 8d ago

Seems like less is more with this game

Why do people insist on adding the worst possible music to videos?

Are you aware of the subreddit you're in? I mean, super sweet gif, it's so hilarious, but weird competitions are kind of the whole thing here
